Hi, I recently purchased my first firearm (an AR15 style rifle) and I am picking it up tomorrow. I live in a highrise condo and transporting the rifle in and out of my condo to my car will require me walking though the lobby, elevator, hallway, etc. Can I legally walk around in the common areas with my unloaded rifle in a rifle bag? TIA.

Absolutely. And since its a long gun, no lock on the case is required either.

Enjoy your new gun! And welcome to the addiction ;)

Welcome to CalGuns.

I thought you need a lock when within a 1000 feet from a school?

To satisy Federal yes, State law, no.

I never do anything unrequired, but in this case I would throw a lock on it. "See officer.........it's locked".

^^^ as said above, a lock should seal the deal.

Thanks for all the info. Picking it up this afternoon. Pretty excited. Plan on purchasing many more firearms in the near future haha.

Just in case your neighbors seem like excitable types.

While it may be legal, I would prefer to stay "undercover," no need to broadcast to everyone you own and are transporting firearms. Stay away from "tactical" cases that scream GUN. Get yourself a soft sided guitar case, often called a "gig bag" and a plain jane looking duffle bag for accesories, ammo, etc.

Ditto on the above. I use a soft guitar gig bag. When I am moving a lot of rifles at once, I use a golf club case which can take about 6 rifles in their individual soft rifle cases.
