Took about a year but I slowly morphed my Saiga 7.62x39 16" into a rifle that functions and feels the way I want.

Parts list:
Tapco adjustable stock (cleaning kit in the stock)
Rubber butt pad
Homemade kydex wrap
Custom made weaver rail mount bolted to the rear trunnion
Wearver Fixed AR rear peep sight
CAA UPG modular grip
Tapco double hook G2 trigger assembly
CSS billet trigger guard
Homemade bullet guide
Ultimak gas tub/rail
Magpul AFG
KSN 0.034 front post
Halcyon Defense 14:1LH to 5/8-24 thread adapter
Mountain Man Machine 308 Linear comp

I had a Red dot on the Ultimak but with my astigmatism it was hard to see. A good peep sight is 1000X better for my eyes. I bought the Weaver sight because it was the smallest fixed AR sight I could find and it was tough. I made the rear rail from an old Savage part I had laying around. I milled off the bottom curve making it flat. Using a block of 6061 aluminum I milled it down to the right shape and height to fit between the rear trunnion and the rail. I then brazed the two parts together. I had the idea to not clean up this part beyond lightly filing the sharp edges. Normally I would run it through the mill again to clean up the welds and then hit the buffing wheel to polish it smooth but decided to leave it looking the way it would had it come from a Russian factory, rough.

a rifle that functions and feels the way I want.

You really "want" the feel of that grip?

HAHA let me rephrase that... "a rifle that functions and feels the way Komifornia will let me." :D

Holy homemade kydex wrap, bugman!

Nice ingenuity. Very cool.

Wanted something that I could remove with a knife. Tried a few different options and ended up with whats pictured. Its not sexy but its very strong yet easily removable. That paracord is stronger than the kydex itself so I'm not worried about it coming off. When the zombies came :willy_nilly: it will only take a quick slice with a knife to remove it. Its all one cord about 4 feet long so its even useful after I cut it off. I made a wrap with rivets but that thing was a PITA to take off.

I did my old one with pop rivets. had no problem ripping it off bare banded as soon as I crossed the AZ border :43:

Not usually a fan of featurless builds, but I have to say, I like yours quite a lot. Excellent job!!!!

Very ingenuous how you made the rear sight mount. Looks like it would be rock solid.

Any plans to convert the front end into the AK "look"?

How did you get the AFG on there?

There is a short 5 inch rail bolted to the bottom of the stock hand guards.

is it legal to have AFG on a featurless builds?

Some will say yes and some will say no. I have done my own research and feel confident that it is not a pistol grip. This case is closed for me.

Any plans to convert the front end into the AK "look"?

No, not at all. I will be building a new AK from scratch which will have the traditional AK look. This saiga build was for function.

Have not shot it yet but it feels very solid. As a stupid test I tied a rope to sight and swung the rifle over my head a few times. Didn't budge. I think it will work out great and the best part is I can still remove the top cover without touching the sight. I'm still shocked that no one has made this very simple part yet. I only had to drill one 1/4 hole at the front of the tang and even that was probably not needed but I wanted it to be extra strong. If I had a CNC machine I'd blow out a few hundred and sell them.

If anyone with a CNC is lurking and wants to make these, PM me and i'll send you the measurements.... in exchange for a free one :D. It was a little difficult getting the height just right to match the AK front and AR rear. Took a lot of small passes on the mill and refitting.

Not familiar with featureless but, is there any rule on permanence of the kydex grip? or are you playing with the notion that if a cop or DA cuts the para cord, then they and not you had violated the law? just as whats been said about the fix 10/30-20 mags?

Bug Splat

No rule on kydex wrap. As long as I cant force my thumb through it could be made from thick beef jerky. If an officer or DA agent wants to cut the cord they can go to jail for illegally manufacturing an assault weapon. I can not get my thumb through without destroying part of the rifle.
