View Full Version : What to do with this forum?

Okay, as I had previously said, the Activism forum never took off and was in many ways distracting so I have moved all the threads in to the 2A Legal and Politics section like it used to be.

So now what?
What to do with this sub forum?

One of the things I have always liked about Calguns is that it is not just a bulletin board but an actual community and to foster that I try to get input from the members on things so that we are all involved and feel like this place is ours.

So in keeping with that I am going to ask the members, what should this forum be for?
Knives?
Clubs? (The social kind..)
Recipes?
Or something else? {Provided it's suitable for polite company ;) }

For all those times you've said "I wish we had a forum for xxxxx" now's your chance, tell me what you'd like to see in this forum.

We could, and may, but quite often people ask about having a forum for this or that so since it's here I thought I'd first try giving the members a chance to pick what they'd want to have.

girls with guns photos only

or a separte forum for kenpo to tell us how great AZ is

Joking aside; it would be nice to have a place to put all the sales & deals threads at shop xyz that show up scattered between the various forums.

examples:

from handgun forum
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=62478
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=62757
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=62732

from rifleman forum
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=62742

from general guns forum
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=57542

from private firearms sales
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=61312

Another thought is a forum specifically for discussion of gunshows.

Kinda like the regional idea, are we talking about modelling after arfcom's "Hometown" with maybe Northern, Central, and Southern.

I like the 3 tier of locations for forums. It would definitely be a relevant depository for announcements and tips pertinent to people of said area. Often I see posts claiming a big sale at such-and-such store, or a mass gathering at some certain range by Calguns members, or political activism requiring our presence, but then discover the said location is to be in Sacramento or just outside San Francisco, and unfortunately I rarely have the time to make a 14 hours in driving round trip to attend. Yet, there are MANY posts that are location oriented.

One of the imminent rules within the For Sale forums is that people post their location. Why should it be any different for similar location-dependent announcements? Yet, often such announcements might say the name of a store, range, or event, without declaring a location. So I spend 10 minutes on line searching out the location only to find attending would not be possible.

Instead, it would be good to have announcements of what's going on in your locale formulated in one area, and checking in for updates, tips, clubs gatherings, store sales, hot items seen at some store, gun show announcements, etc., would be much easier. And if for some reason, I have time or vacation to blow that I might be able to make it to Sacramento for a few days, I would check in tot he Northern California section to see what's up.

jokes.

We already have a gunsmithing section.

I'm not really sure I get the point of the regional stuff. What would go there that doesn't already have a section? The last thing I want is to have to wade through yet more forums to find topics of interest to me...

Honestly, it seems like quite a few sections/boards don't get any traffic at all -- worse, people don't notice their questions belong in other forums. I see questions about holsters in the handguns, reloading in rifleman's... Clearly people are already confused.

If you poke your head in here from work throughout the day like I do (and most of us probably), it's better to have a smaller number of forums because you can scan through them quicker (with less navigation) to see if there are any threads that interest you.

First of all I will say that I am dead against a regional forum. I feel that it would be too divisive. Not in the sense that it would cause arguments, but we are a fairly close knit community and it could foster distance in that regard.

As far as what we can do with it, I like the knife forum idea. If we were to do a restricted forum, I would restrict it to senior members or something like that.

I donít remember who it was that said this and I am too tired to scan over this again to find it, but I agree that too many forums can become distracting. There is a lot of good information in other forums here such as the reloading, outdoors, hunting, various accessories forums, and so forth that I rarely look at because it is so spread out. I would look at a lot more on a more regular basis if it were consolidated. Just my $0.02 worth.

. . . says every person from central/southern CA.

California's a big state. Like it or not, it's true. For those of us in isolated areas . . . no offense, but I don't care about what happens in the bay area or L.A. Almost all of the region-specific stuff happens in one of those two areas. There's so much posted that happens in those areas, I'm afraid I'll miss the posts that actually apply to me and my area.

Also, you do realize that having less sections means that those sections will get more traffic? If you want to make sure you don't miss anything, try using the "New Posts" button, which lumps every post you haven't read yet into one section. A veritable utopia for your kind. Not to say that I don't use it myself; I find it easier to use the "New Posts" button for general reading. But when I'm interested in info on a specific subject, I hit the individual sections. The best of both worlds! :)

So far the suggestions have been to have one for the San Diego or So Cal area. I am actually from northern San Joaquin county and there isnít that much regional stuff talked about that applies to me. If it was going to be strictly for talking about events and so forth, that would be fine with me. If it were going to talk about legal things in that area that while they may not directly affect us, we have a general interest in. If we all took the attitude that we donít care about what happens in other areas, then we will lose our effectiveness in terms of unified numbers. I also do not want to see it become something where that is where people from an area ďhang outĒ and start putting stuff there that is of general interest.

I didnít know about the new post button:banghead:. I will have to start using that, thanks.

Yeah I'd say skip the regional and keep it statewide simple.

This Activist forum was a good idea in theory but didn't seem to draw the attention or it was easy to make an excuse to whistle past it.

I'm for leaving it in a 'reserved for future use' status. Maybe when the elections get closer utilize it to keep a running diatribe of the various candidates, a political dump or wasteland to keep out of the other forums.

Or we could just use it for selling T-shirts:D

AS if the DOJ continues to be stupid and attempts to confiscate OLL Rifles this would be a real nice connect the dots list for them to use.

We need a "Gunsmithing How To" only forum. Or, step by step with photos.

Gunsmithing mixed with reloading and ammo gets confusing. Especially since it looks like most posts are questions in there. We need answers titled accordingly. List projects you've done or rifles you've built up from receivers. Links to parts suppliers and parts lists for specific firearms. When I built my first AR I was told to go to arf.com for answers on how to put it together. It worked, but I think it would be best to keep this stuff in house.

Feel free to organize sucha post that links to good threads, and we will sticky it at the top of the forum, there could be a separate sticky for smithing and reloading. A lot of info is in there, but it needs someone to organize, index, and link it.

We need a "Gunsmithing How To" only forum. Or, step by step with photos.

Gunsmithing mixed with reloading and ammo gets confusing. Especially since it looks like most posts are questions in there. We need answers titled accordingly. I'll look into that. That's what I was trying to get out, that there may be some good info there, but it needs to be organized.

I thought of that and suggested that as well.

I thought as well it would be good if it was members only IE no guests.
