very nice!

Looks like the cartridges have no problem fitting into the 5.45 magazine. Well at least 15 of them!

If this were a production rifle I'd get one in a heartbeat; after I move out of CA :p

That, or an AK 103!

I think it would be pretty nice to build an RPK in 6.8. Feeding the damn thing would send me into bankruptcy no doubt. I've never fired a 6.8, but every one is raving about it. Sounds like a good round to me.

Its a damn fine round, and I'm sure Kalashnikov would have approved of that round over the 5.45.

It's like the 10mm though, while providing a quantifiable performance increase, it's not enough to make enough people swith over from 45ACP. There are so many 45s out there and its just economically less viable to switch to hard to find10mm when the 45s do just fine for the most part.

10mm also had the problem of more recoil then the .45 which made it difficult to shoot and over penetration which limited its usefulness for HD, you could use lighter 10mm loads to reduce recoil and limit over penetration but the results could be then replicated on the .40 SW platform.

I think the 10mm is a good comparison. And yeah, I think that old Micky Kalashnikov wasn't so into the 5.45 for his platform, but mother Russia wouldn't care what one guy's opinion was, even it if was his rifle. The thing is, the 6.8 had been around in concept for a while. The British .280 for the EM2 is very similar. The Italian 6.5 is also very similar balistically. The only thing, is, the 6.8, from what I have read, needs a different platform than the M16. Combat Arms had an article about it saying that troops in Iraq who were given M16s in 6.8 loved the effectiveness, but the round wore the gun out quick, especially the barrel, but the working parts took a beating too. I imagine that the FAL would be a perfect rifle for it, and in fact, the 7mm that the Belgians originally wanted for the FAL was very much like the 6.8. I don't know, maybe this is all old news to you guys.

I can see the lure of a round accurate to 500 meters in an AK, but a stamped receiver isn't going to be terribly accurate anyway. AKs aren't exactly known as platforms for tack-drivers.

I could see it done SVD-style I suppose. But then why when you've got 7.62x54R?
