View Full Version : Best CA legal AR for <$1000

09-23-2012, 7:24 PM
The title pretty much says it all, I'm new to the AR platform I have a lot of experience with Ak's but was wondering if someone could steer me in the right direction to the best CA compliant AR for the money. It will be used pretty much just for target shooting at my local 100yd range or plinking in the desert. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

Build your own. If you can put together legos, you can put together an AR.

S&W M&P-15 Sport on sale is usually in the $650-700 range.

Give the Deltons a look. They're also a good value at about less than 800.

No first hand experience but I've heard good things about the S&W M&P15 Sporter

I would say one of the S&W M&P also

Stag makes a good AR. I have also heard good things about the S&W M&P.

M&P as mentioned, although I would also like to suggest ti build one. Good to know the platform mechanics and my first build outperforms my friends' bought rifles

QFT. This section of the forum seems to be getting flooded with similar threads involving the "best" this or that.

But I would still like to help ;)

My vote goes to PSA. Sub $300 uppers and $150 lower build kits leaves you with about $550 to spend on a stripped lower (~$120) and quality BCG (~$150) plus charging handle. Throw in a bullet button and Troy BUIS and you have an excellent setup for less than $900. Spend the remaining $100 on magazines and ammo.

Check out Windham Weaponry, I think they are a good value for what you get. Especially if you can find them for less than $900.

DPMS Oracle is usually less than $700. Same with S&W. Both are good guns. My opinion is to build one. That's what I did. Build your stripped lower and buy an assembled upper. You get the configuration you like and don't have to swap out parts.

If you're lazy like me, get a complete lower by JD ($250) and an upper by Spikes ($400 - $800). Depending on which upper you go with.

+1 for Spikes!

Except I would do a Spikes lower to match the upper.

I recommend stag arms plus they come with a lifetime warranty.

If you want a great deal just look up the WTS area. You will find deals on there all the time.

PSA has their best M4 (FN barrel) with AIMPOINT on sale for $999..... Best deal on best quality going.

+1 for PSA and building your own.

I just built my first AR, bought all the parts from fellow Calgunners on the market section.

Complete Spikes lower, complete PSA upper, with BUIS, midwest quadrails, Magpul handgrip, BCM charging handle, 4 mags, sling, case, and 260 rds of ammo for just under $900

Even with DROS, I still have a chunk of change leftover to keep it under $1000

With a little patience, and daily browsing of the market section, you can definitely get a complete AR for under a grand. Good luck!

Palmetto State Armory, BCM, S&W MP-15, or a STAG, or CMMG would meet your price range (with no upgrades etc.).

For 100 or less yards it's probably a wash on which one is 'best'. Buy the S&W; it's gotten very good reviews and is probably the least expensive. Ar15s are so modular that you can upgrade parts later if you don't like what you have. With the money you save you can (and should) buy ammo and/or training.

Like this one, even comes with Troy Rear sight.
