i have a garand i just got today. its an HRA with a serial number 5512612. it was made in 1954. the barrel is marked as follows: HRA 6535448 9-54 RS38. it has a fewother markings but i'm not familiar with them yet. i'm continuing to learn more about these rifles and the markings. seeing that the barrel was made in 54 and the receiver in 54 i am wondering if this could be the original barrel. how can i tell? i tried looking at some other sites but they were confusing to me. any help would be appreciated. thanks calgunners

Probably original. Likelihood of the correct barrel showing up as a replacement is pretty thin.

so you think it would be safe to say matching barrel and receiver/original barrel?

not uncommon HRA are post war and don't see that much use to warrant a rebarrel. Lots of post war rebuilt has minor internal parts change... not a full rebarrel. WRA n SA are more coo mom to see complete rebarrel rebuilt.

I doubt it would have gotten a new barrel the same year it was built.

Personally, I'd give it a 99.5% chance that it has the original barrel.

99.9% Original :)

Leave it alone, have you shot it? Go to CMP Site they have lots of good literature on the M-1

CMP M-1's are the BEST C&R buy today, bar none.

I know I bought eight, and if you order H&R's highest S/N available they are like new or as close to new an M-1 can get and still be original................ or were a few years ago

I was lucky to get three Carbines, a 1903A3, plus an M1D and don't forget the Bayonets.

I wish they had the carbines still :(

I would say you have a year correct mfg. barrel for your one of 6.8 million M1 garand rifle.

You can now say during any M1 rifle discussion it has a "Correct barrel and receiver".
