Hey gents, so... I have decided to build my first AR! To start, let me say, I DO NOT have a price budget on this:) I was to also add that just because I have no budget, doesnt mean that I want to spend the most... I really don't care to spend the money but, it has to be justified on quality and performance in order to do so,

I will also say, I do not have timeline on this so... saving up for the more expensive stuff will not bother me as long as I know I am working toward a badass weapon:)

I also want to add that, I am a "pistol" guy so as I have some basic knowledge of this stuff, I am no expert. I started a built of a 10/22 a little less than a year ago and just finished it up... I am not falling in love with this stuff! To add to that, my first AR-15 was purchased for pure accuracy... It basically consists of the following:
Spikes Lower Receiver
Geissele two stage trigger
Magpul PRS Stock
I had Frank from Compass Lake throw together the upper which is sporting a Krieger Free Float Barrel and space gun hand guard... Oh, and I have a Ziess Scope on her (just like my 10/22).

So with that said, I want to throw together a rifle that is more defense and tactical vs Sniper/Space gun...

Here is what I have already (and I will not change this stuff)
Spikes Lower
Vltor Mur-1
Vltor Casv-EL
Daniel Defense Lower Parts Kit
Bravo Co. Charging Handle Mod 4
Bravo Co. BCG
Eotech HHS I

Now... onto the rest of what I need... I want a Geissele trigger just not sure what one to get (Thinking Super Dynamic 3 Gun)... love the flat trigger look and feel so I am looking for thoughts on this?

I definitely need barrel recommendations (I am pretty sure I am going with a 16" but, I do not know enough to make the right decision on this... HELP)... since this i'snt a sniper rifle, I am not sure where to go on this. I love the Krieger that I have on my Compass Lake but, I am def open to suggestions. I also dont know, is a super high end barrel over kill at this point? I need specifics on what you all think... manufacturer, finish, twist, etc...

I am torn on a gas block front flip sight... since I have the eotech, I DO NOT want the standard front post sight so... do I get the Gas block front flip sight or just a gas block with and put a flip sight on the rail? Who makes the best ones? I saw Vltor makes one, Troy, YHM... I am open to suggestions here as I do not know where to go!

Rear flip sights... what do you guys think on these?

Buffer tubes and rear stock/butt plate? I am pretty sure I will go with either a Larue or Vltor tube... I really like the look of Vltor's E-Mod Stock but, I am always a sucker for Magpul... I really, really like the CTR as I have one on my AK47 but, I always like reading opinions on this too!

What are your guys trigger guard brand preferences?

Looking for thoughts on BAD device, ambi safety selector, ambi bolt release, magazines (I am probably 99% sure I will go with P Mags), etc... anything else I am forgetting?

I 100% understand that all this stuff is subjective and we will never get everyone to agree on this but, the more "Updated" info I can get, the better my own personal build will be. I have read a lot of AR15.com, Snipershide.com, etc... the problem is, most of what I come across is at least 2-5 years old.

I am also aware that this replies will probably be quite lengthy... I want that as I think that is what will help me, and a lot of others who are searching for this info!

Again, I am not necessarily looking for exactly what you are running on your AR-15... I am looking for all around best (function, quality, reliability, etc...)

So starting with what I already have (mentioned at the top)... and given the specifics on where I want to go with this rifle, what are your recommendations for a Dream AR-15?

Looking forward to reading all the replies to this thread!!

You have picked all these parts but have not asked yourself what you want this AR for? Long-distance, plinking, HD etc etc. First answer this question, then everything will fall in place.

P.S. You don't have to go all expensive for your first build UNLESS you know exactly what you want out of it.

Ges... I thought it was fairly clear in the OP... I said, I have a compass lake for long distance/target shooting so I don't need that...

I also started that I was going to have this as a combat rifle/tac for run & gun type shooting at 50 yards and in... this would obviously be able to be used for HD or plinking as well?

Thanks for the reply though....

I would go with a midlength gas system a flash hider if you don't have a can and a quality bolt.

The barrel and bolt are the most important components in an AR.

Dream AR.
Spikes Lower.

Pick 1. :sailor:

Just kidding. I'd say, if money is no option, why not go with a Kreiger? That said, yeah it is kind of overkill. You will probably be just as happy with a White Oak or something like that. Unless you happen to have a certain surplus of a specific grain ammo, your twist really can't go too wrong as long as it's 1-7, 1-8, even 1-9.

Look into Phase 5 instead of the BAD... a little more sleek looking IMO. The gas block flip up sight vs. flip ups on the rail is going to be mostly preference. Maybe get both and see which you prefer and sell the other? I run the Magpul MBUS, but I really like the Midwest Industries flip-ups. If I could justify the price, I'd be running those.

I was like you and was a sucker for Magpul... still am to an extent. But I switched over to the E-MOD and I'm really happy with it. Can't go wrong with PMags, and if money's no problem, go with the KNS pins.

Buffer etc I'm not a huge expert on... Guntotingmonkeyboy and those guys will chime in soon. Good luck with your build!

My recommendation on your dream rifle is whatever you like on it. haha...seriously. If I were to build a dream rifle, I would build it on my spec, not on someone elses idea...or else it wouldnt be "my dream rifle", it'll be more of "our dream rifle" rifle. ;)

Now if you were to ask "I want to build an AR for X..." then Im sure a lot of folks can help. :D

14.5 with a pinned comp/hider. 16" will give you nothing but more barrel, buy cold hammer forged
VLTOR uppers are gtg
Geiselle S3G trigger is my choice.
Troy flip up sights.
BAD lever is no bueno, it's great until you're really trying to move fast and your finger accidentally sends the bolt home.
The B5 sopmod stock is really great
Battle Arms Development ambi safety long standard and short thin is my preference
BCM med charging handle
Get the Aimpoint T1 2 MOA
Adams Arms piston with railed gas block, mid length
Samson Evo Ultralight rail
Spikes tungsten buffer

I would probably find a good Nitrided 16" barrel (I don't like pinned/welded muzzle devices). I believe Loki Weapon Systems has one with a 1:8 twist. FailZero NiB coated BCG. If you insist on Geissele, I'd get the Super V trigger. However, I believe JP is a far superior trigger to any Geissele offering. I would go with a high quality set of BUIS. I personally like Troy. Barrel, trigger, and sights/optics are usually the most important items and maybe a good free float hand guard. Anything else is icing.

I think the Noveske NSR is lighter than the Samson.
