Right after the Civil War Springfield Armory made eight (8) single shot 50/70 trapdoor pistols for US Calvary officers for use in the Indian Wars.

Serial number 1 is in a private collection, #2 is in the Springfield Armory Museum, #3 is in the Smithsonian and this is #4 that I'm holding in my hand. A good friend of mine owns it and has the most complete private collection of US military handguns in the U.S. You won't find many rarer guns than this.

That's thing is beautiful. I bet that after shooting it a few times though, you'd be more likely to want to use it as a club.

People think that you're joking but all eight guns that were sent out to calvary officers to try were returned and none were ever ordered.

WOW!

Are all 8 accounted for or, is there still a chance of finding one at a garage sale or gun buyback?

I don't think you're joking, I'd send it back too. What cavalryman would want that when revolvers were available?

Just to see and hold one will be so memorable, but to actually shoot one? I wouldn't pass that up. The Howda pistols were originally chambered in .577 Snider and this one in a smaller 50-70 cartridge would have been great in the event of a big wild animal encounter.

Wow! Same black powder charge as the 45/70 with a .50cal bullet instead of .45cal.
How much does it weigh? Were the Indians riding dinosaurs that needed to be stopped?
I could see shooting that thing while mounted on your horse and the horse looking back and saying "REALLY? GET ME SOME HORSE EAR PLUGS YOU DUMMY" That is, if you didn't get knocked off, that would just make the horse laugh.

I'll be sure to give my character one of these the next time I'm playing the Rifts roleplaying game.

44Fred, thank you for this post, it was very, very funny.

I had no idea these existed and I'm not surprised nobody ordered them.

Thanks for the history lesson and the pictures.
