For those following, you know I've been wanting to test this puppy out. Well today, I went to Reeds and did just that. Considering how dirty (cylinder felt gummy swinging out, and rotating), it shot very well. Better than I can shoot on average but the feel of the gun and the trigger pretty much told me what I wanted to know. After 50 rounds of .38, I went back out and purchased a new revolver.

The model is the 627-5. It was selling for $1199.99 and since I was testing that same model, I got a $25 discount, which paid for the Registration fee, so my final total was $1305.49.

It is officially in jail for the next 10 days. Pickup will be Thursday, 9/20.

Thanks everyone for your input on the previous thread. I need to start changing dies out and load up 50 rounds of .38 and 50 rounds of .357 this week! Pretty exciting for me at least.

Sweet gun! Congrats on the new purchase.

If you're already set up to reload .357, why would you have to switch to .38? Unless it's for cost, which I could easily understand after plunking down that much for a new gun.

Hot damn...is that a PC model?

S&W PC wheelguns are nice. I shot my friend's TRR8 and it was very smooth, in 38 and 357.

I've shot that exact same gun as you. While I loved it, I still want the 627 V Comp more.

Yep!

Well, I shot 38 today because I went through just 11 rounds (my left overs from a some 5-8 years ago) of .44 magnum. The .38 felt more like my 9mm in relative terms.

.38 is a good target round but I will be loading 50 rounds .357 as well. I will probably use my Single Stage RCBS for the task and meter the powder via the Chargemaster.

But now... I need some bullets!!! I have tons of brass and primers. I should have stocked up at Vallejo. :(

That is sweet! Been wanting one of those for open revolver division, but I don't get to shoot as much as I want to these days. I'm sure you'll take care of the one you have in jail.

I recommend Bear Creek 158gr SWC's with Trail Boss powder. My 4" S&W loves this load and its pretty clean shooting.

The 627 is the gun you rent and shoot, and the next thing you know, your credit card is out.

The S&W 627 is popular in my family.

Don't have Trail Boss powder. Unfortunately, I have way too much Unique (1.5 lb.s left) :(

I might still have some H2400 but not a whole lot.

I'll look for the Trail Boss if it's available around here. I haven't looked up .38 and .357 load data in ernest but will be doing that this week.

Unique will do the job. I switched to Trail Boss because of the volume, I can actually see Trail Boss in a 38 Special case. The pictures below are 3.0gr of Trail Boss and 3.0gr of W231.

I love that pistol! If I could have just one revolver that would be it. Thankfully I am not limited to just one! lol

Loaded up 60 rounds of .38 (4.4gr. Unique). Total time: 1hr. 20 min. which included finding the primers, hand held primer tool, 158 lead, etc. I was given clean nickel plated .38 brass (I checked the length to be sure they were all 38 and not 357). It would have been faster had I used a regular dispenser but since I'm using the Chargemaster, you have to wait awhile before you hear the beep. I think it could have all been done in under an hour. :(

Now to readjust for .357 for tonight.

Great choice. I went with the 2.6" bbl 627 PC a while ago and thought I should have probably gone for the 5" bbl instead.
