View Full Version : Key holing from CZ Kadet Kit

I was shooting the Kadet Kit at 7 yards at an indoor range last night, and all was going well. Got to about the 7th or 8th magazine and couldn't find my hits at all! So hung some new reactive paper and brought the target in to 'bout 3 yds. Every shot was key holing! Shot a couple more rnds to double check, and yes that's what was happening. Shooting Remington Thunderbolt 40gr. I usually have a variety of ammo with me, but last night the only 22lr was the Thunderbolt.

Field stripped it and in the dim light couldn't see much. I didn't have any .22 cleaning supplies with me. I blew out the barrel to get rid of the unburnt powder, and looked again, still couldn't see anything. Put the KK away, and shot 9mm.

When I got home, I couldn't even get the cleaning rod with a single patch through the bore of the KK. During one of the attempts, the rod was really stuck, so I took another rod, put it in the other end, and tapped the original rod out. During this a piece of metal, 'bout an inch long comes out. I feels like lead, but is very shiny. I didn't know if it was lead or part of the bore. More trying to run wet patches through, with force, each time getting more metal out. Tried Hoppes bore cleaner, let it sit, used a nylon brush (about 10 or more passes), another wet patch, still REALLY dirty. More bore cleaner, and the same routine. The bore looks clean, but looks like some galling or buildup in one spot in the barrel, and spotty but all the way around in this one spot.

I then used some Shooter's bore cleaner. Did the same routine as above 2x and I got more out, but I can still see the galling/lead/whatever.

What do you folks think is going on?

These pics are AFTER the thorough cleaning mentioned above

Your barrel is leaded up badly. It happens. Thunderbolt is crap, but I've had it happen with Blazer. Clean it out untill all the lead is out. They sell bras/coppers screens you push through with a jag for this puropose. You can also buy a "chore boy" scrubbing pad from the supermaket, tear pieces off, and wrap it around a brush and scrub the barrel.

Yep, leaded up barrel. There are ways to get the lead out - solvents or electrolysis. Should shoot fine once the lead is removed.
