I'm interested in getting an 1911, one I would like to shoot competition with but also keep relatively traditional in appearance. I've been drawn to several two tone 1911's. the Kimber CDP and the new Colt Combat Elite. I love the look and the wood grips. Only thing is I'm left handed and will need an ambi safety. The kimber comes with one, the Colt does not. Plus I would like a colt just for authenticity sake!

You can have a gunsmith add a safety so don't let that hold you back!

Yep thats the picture of it. Any comments on quality of Kimber vs Colt (other than that one example)? The biggest reason im leaning towards the Colt is because it is all steel, and I would like the weight for competition. and what should I expect to pay for a good condition used Colt CE?

You can buy a Colt or you can buy a copy.

There was a guy in the marketplace last week in northern Ca(San Jose) that had one
for $900 I believe--good price and it looked good. Here it is!! Has the adjustable rear sight with a box!

Here are the goods and bads from someone that carries & competes with a Colt Combat Elite

I bought it specifically for daily carry (see picture below) -

Prior to this I own and shoot a Colt Gold Cup and a tuned Colt 1991.

On the Combat Elite

The trigger isn't adjustable (they loctite the screw) and a call to colt confirmed that it is non-adjustable - - not a deal breaker - - the trigger is just a tad heavier than I would like - I will eventually get it worked - but doesn't interfer (after all it is a carry gun)

the white dot combat sights with mine came as a "driving the dots" sight picture (#3 on the image below) - - personally I can't stand it - changed to Novak fiber optic and made it point of aim (#2 below) - much more of what I am used to. BUT - it is accurate even shooting the dots.

It is more finicky with magazines than my Gold Cup or 1991 - using the Colt supplied and Wilson Combat resolve issue (my shooting star mag's were a bit old, new springs and use them for practice) - one thing I didn't like, the colt mags are stainless steel and a b$tch to drill holes for bumper pad (eventually went with glue on Wilson pads) - but the colt mags are slick - they slide like greased lightening.

For competition I added a Wilson beveled mag well - the Combat Elite has a slightly beveled well, but at my age I have trouble hitting the hole (go ahead, snicker away)

The Combat Elite functions well, is accurate, and looks GREAT - I absolutely love the current grips (half checked with scroll COLT)

I use this same pistol to shoot IDPA with - and shoot quite well with it (hone my carry skills)

So - the recommendation from someone carrying a Colt Combat Elite right now is - - - BUY ONE.

Hey thanks for all the info. Its a real help! I am not going to carry it. I live is SF so no CCW for me :( . Mostly it would be collectible and for IDPA/ USPSA and my first 1911. You said the trigger was not adjustable, but I could put in a different/better trigger if I chose too right? And as for the mag's, it sounds like just any other 1911, i.e. got to find mags that work for that particular gun.
