I just picked up a Maverick 88 at Big 5 for $209 + tax and DROS!!

8 shot, 20" barrel. Basically a 500 security without sling swivels and a rear slide safety (push button safety on the trigger guard instead). A slightly different pump handle but otherwise identical. And all the 500's accessories will fit it. This is a deal you can't beat with a stick.

Just thought I'd let y'all in on it. :)

Isn't the Big 5 Mossberg 500 combo with 18.5" and 28" barrels that was just $279 (seems like its this price or less quite often) a better deal?

Well Cardshark, I guess it depends on what you really want it for. I actually purchased the 500 "combo" yesterday but when I saw the Maverick for $209 today I went in a.d exchanged for it and put $70 back in my pocket.

For me the extra capacity is more desirable then the extra barrel. And if I really want to use the Maverick for trap the 20" barrel should work just fine.

I thought the Mavericks had the odd forearm setup where if you wanted to swap it out you had to buy a whole new assembly as the forearm it comes with is integral to the rail.

I think you did great! The maverick makes a fine hd gun for the price. Did you happen to notice if it was made in the USA? I think they are but not quite sure.

Yeah shorty, the Maverick's are made in Texas and use some parts from Mexico. The main differences are the cross bolt safety vs. the top tang safety on the 500, the trigger group is not interchangeable with the 500 and the forearm isn't compatible. Otherwise the barrels, stocks and most everything else is interchangeable with the 500's.

All I'm going to do to mine is put a 6 position stock, shell holder and swivel studs/sling on it.

Correct.... and the 500 combo that Big 5 sells uses the same Maverick fore end.

I bought one last time they were on sale. Haven't shot it yet, but plan to. The stock is a little long so I ordered a 13" Aimpro stock for it. I don't think you can beat this deal unless you like buying Chinese.

Picked mine up earlier this year.....yes, you have to exchange the action slide with a different one to change the forend. I found this Complete action slide tactical forend for my Mavy 88.

Here's the Link http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006CVLF7S/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01

You can also exchange the forend action slide with a Mossberg 500 so that you can exchange the forend.

I would say that the Mossberg 500 combo is one that I now realize is a bit more multi-function since it comes with a longer barrel for skeet/trap/hunting.

But for a purely HD shotgun....it's awesome!
