Looking to see who would accept shipment the cheapest in the Bay Area, CA.
I know gunbroker.com has a list of dealers but would like your own experiences.

Thanks!

Where in the Bay Area? You may not want to travel depending on where you are.

I'm in East Bay (Hayward).
I don't mind driving up to an hour away.
Just frustrated at seeing normal transfer rates out of state for $20 but in CA they range from $60-$100.

Figure $25 of it is for the gov't fees. The rest is whatever the FFL wants to put in their pocket. $75 is the cheapest I've seen. Either Metco in Fairfield or Rogers Relics in Santa Clara.

He and Lisa are good people, you will probably deal with Lisa. And yes he charges $75.00 (although I'm assuming if you were buying long guns you could combine DROS fees). The best thing about RR is that he only does transfers, so he is not going to whine about anything your LGS would complain about, he won't be ignoring "other paying customers" and you make an appointment to get your transfer done, and you are in and out in minutes.

CasperSYTFU

^Very much a plus.

However I just realized that since it would be a transfer from my father in Florida, he would only have to hand me the gun and I complete this form:
http://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/pdfs/firearms/forms/oplaw.pdf

Correct?

Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks guys!

Fairfield Pawn in Fairfield, CA charges $10 for FFL transfers. I have used him before for a purchase off of grabagun.com and would recommend them for a cheap FFL.

Seems as though I can just fill out the form I posted above and pay $19 since its in the family and call it a day though.

This is incorrect and illegal.

You can bypass the roster in your situation, but you will need to find an FFL who is familiar with intrafamilial transfers. You will also pay normal transfer fees.

Yea just reread that even within the family, since its out of state it has to go to the FFL.

I believe Rogers is $65 for long guns and $75 for hand guns.

Rogers, UGI and RMB are all great FFL's. I can personally recommend all three! I would much rather support these FFL's than any other gun stores in the Bay Area.

In your quest for the cheapest transfer fee, you really need I consider your time & fuel cost for (2) round trips. I've been there, and thought the same way for a while. It's cheaper & more convenient for me to pay $80 for a transfer in Lodi, than to drive 30min for even a $50 transfer.

CasperSYTFU
08-31-2012, 8:48 AM
Yea I've decided on UGI since the trip to Fairfield and back would negate the cost and when I emailed UGI about off roster out of state intrafamiliar transfers they knew the exact process and thanked me for letting them earn my business.
I'll review when the time comes around Xmas hopefully.

I live in Antioch and I use Tracy Rifle & Pistol for ALL of my FFL transfers. They have received at least 6 rifles for me over the past few years and charged me $40 for the first and $10 for each additional one on the same DROS. With the DOJ fees of $25, the total price is $65.

All of the FFLs here within 20 miles are quoting $100 plus 10% of the value of the firearm!! No thanks.

08-31-2012, 12:50 PM
Out of state transfers in Tucson are $40 OTD, but they have a 20 day hold until they can release the gun to you. Purchases from the store and used stock (after 20 days) you just pay the sales tax for the value of the item.

I'm with Larry on this one as well. Did a Colt AR15 transfer a month ago. Robert charged me $65 ($40 for his fee & $25 goes to the govt). Just so you're aware, he needs to collect taxes on the firearm from out of state as require by law. He doesn't pocket that fee. His office hours are usually M-F. Yelp has reviews on his practice for reference.

Oh, and you can't go wrong with Roger's Relics also. A bit higher fee but good folks to deal with.

Good luck.

st a cheaper local "retail" dealer like Santa Cruz Armory.

Just to be clear, Roger's is $65 OTD for long guns and $75 OTD for handguns, so not any higher than RMB. As I said above though, both are excellent FFL's. I would choose which to use based on driving distance!

Thats why I do not buy guns on line. The store in oakley charges $125 no matter what, even if it is a lower. Brentwood Armory I think charges $75. I would think the gun stores should cut you a break especially when you give them your business. They should take care of their repeating customers. Time all the fees are charged for shipping to them I can find it cheaper with in a 40 mile radius, and most of the time a ffl local will match.

Darklyte27
09-01-2012, 8:11 AM
If a local store sells you a gun, lower etc. they are already making money on the sale of the gun. Then they charge tax and 25$ dros on top of that. If they are charging you more money on top of that 25$ dros go elsewhere.

Local shops charge a FEE ie 50$ on top of the 25$ DROS.

many people get confused, 25$ DROS is not going in their pocket, the 50$ or whatever price they charge is for doing the transfer for you between the store you bought it from.

I use to use Snellings in Sacramento but an hour drive is too far for me now he use to be 25$ for him 25$ dros the last i heard he was 35$.
I use Kevin Smith in Martinez. its 50$ for him 25$ DROS to transfer.

Roger and Lisa at Roger's Relics are great guys but they recently jacked up prices to $65 + DROS, which put them in the same price category as highest prices local gun shops, you can still find FFL transfers <= $40 here locally, so they are not competitive at all any more. It was my mistake that I did not check current prices with them before ordering 3 rifles to be shipped to them. Also I have specifically arranged 3 rifles to be shipped to them at the same time, did all paperwork on the same DROS and picked up everything together and they still charged me $65 for EACH rifle. Most FFL guys are charging "additional fee" for transfers on the same DROS. End to end, I'm out of pocket for $100+. While I like Roger and Lisa doing business with them does not make sense to me anymore.
