Hi Guys,

New to the forum and I searched for "Remington Golden Bullet" and found/read some pretty bad reviews about it.

My question being I bought a Ruger 22/45 recently and was going to shoot it Friday at the burbank meet up for the first time (God willing!) and was wondering if I should just spring for it and buy some CCIs?

Any comments are appreciated!

YMMV. I've got a 22/45 and had some FTF, stovepipes on the golden bullets. Federal bulk packs work great. I ran Minimags for the first 200 rounds just to help break it in (I dunno if it helped or not but I figured 'eh, what the heck')

Whet I did when I got my 22 pistol was that I ran about 250 rounds of CCI mini mags then switched over to Winchester 555 box. It's up to you how you want to break in your barrel

The more $$$ you spend on ammo the better the firearm functions, cleaner shooting and accuracy generally increases. No Mas GBs.

I have written off buying GB's for any gun.
Blazer or Federal bulk packs should serve you well.

I get the occasional stovepipe from Federal but can't remember the last time I had an issue with Blazer in my 22/45 (1000+ rounds). I haven't used CCI's in it yet.

Thank you everyone for the responses. CCI it is then Walmart road trip to pick some bulk packs up.

Last time I checked Walmart they only had GBs in 225 packs. That being said, I think my 22/45 has passed the breaking in period. Federal and Winchester bulk seems to work well now.

After initially feeding mine 200 rounds of Minimags, it's eaten everything else I've given it: Federal bulk red and blue box, Federal Automatch, Federal Lightning, Winchester Super X, Remington subsonic, Remington Thunderbolt, and yes a little Golden Bullet too. My biggest complaint about the GB is that the coating they have gums up my Ultimate Clip Loader

I ran about 300 Mini Mags through mine to start. Then I switched to Federal Blue Box and Blazers and did not have any trouble to start with. Then for some reason this last box of Feds has had several FTE's. Must have been a bad lot.

ive had bad luck with remington ammo and ive been told they have wax on them that will dirty your gun quick. i dont think federal is the best but its cheaper then most and its never given me and issue

What about bulk Federal "Automatic Match" (um.. white box)? Reds are round nose copper washed, blues are HP? White and blue are pretty much the same price at Wally's. Supposedly Golden Bullets are now "new and improved." They don't seem waxy, but the Thunderbolts are.

I'll put them all through mine when I get my 22/45 out of jail. The ones that don't work get used in the revolver... it doesn't care one bit.

The white box is good stuff! A bit more pricey than the red box but eh, it's .22lr...

The CCI standard velocity target ammo runs great in my 22/45 target model.

http://www.sgammo.com/product/cci/500rd-brick-22-lr-cci-standard-velocity-22-long-rifle-ammo-0035

I have shot Winchester LRN target ammo as well and it works great. I don't shoot high velocity ammo, so I can't say how the pistol runs with that, but the standard velocity stuff all works without a hiccup.

They work fine in my MKIII's. In fact there is not much that doesn't work well in my MKIII's.

^^ Same. I did run a few hundred mini mags initially. It eats everything.

Interestingly enough, my ruger prefers the golden bullets. Not a single misfire or malfunction with them. But I've had a ton of stovepipes with the Federal.

That's great. Since so man Calgunners have poor results with GBs you and you DON'T... go buy some lotto tickets today.

I have a Savage 187N that will eat pretty much everything except for the darn Remington GB's every 3rd or 4th round will stovepipe. I still have 3/4 of a box of the darn things. Probably will end up giving them to either my brother for his Ruger pistol or t oa friend for his .22Lr revolver. The next time I buy .22Lr ammo I am going to get more CCI instead.

Mini-Mags come in bulk now... only HP though.

Still Federal Auto match $14/350 rds. at Wallys.

ive put about 2000 of the blazers through mine no issues, plus Winch. 555, rem. 36 grains all worked great.

My 22/45 eats anything.

I had 1 1/2 box of Golden Bullet left (10/22 isn't so happy with it) and went to town with the UltimateClipLoader to finish it off in the 22/45. It does good for the most part but with GB's you will probably get at least a few ftf and fte. Probably wont get more since Federal bulk is much more consistent.

I just got some Aguila Supermaximum and i love that stuff. Clean Fast and accurate for me

Remington Gold bullet is really, really, really bad stuff. Remington makes some good 22 ammo but the gold bullet is just junk.

I miss the old Peters stuff.

I won't buy golden bullsh1ts or thunder turds ever again. Ftf and fte and they are really dirty. Federal bulk is better the the GBs and TBs. I only really shoot blazers or mini mags anymore. Blazers are about the same price as GB anyways, maybe $1 more but it's worth it.

My 22/45 won't shoot them either. Last time out shot 200 rounds and had 33 ftf/fte. They are *****

You may want to pick up several different brands and see what your pistol likes. Rimfires can be picky about ammo, what one pistol likes, another of the same make and model will choke on.

This thread inspired me to try Federal again. Unfortunately. 4 boxes of Golden Bullet with only a few malfunctions, 2nd box of Federal at least one malfunction per magazine or two. At least we've got a single action we can use the Federal out of...

I've shot the rental Mark III at the Burbank Firing Line. They also sell the GBs as ammo for it. Between my son and I, we put about 200 rounds of GBs through last time, and I think I had one FTE, otherwise no problems.

I've had my 22/45 since '99 and it feeds, fires and ejects pretty much everything I've fed it so far. The only real problems originated from the gun being gunked up.

I've got no problem with the Rem GB's. But I run it through my savage mark ii fss with a nary a hiccup. Try lots of diff ammo and see which one your ruger likes.

For a brand new gun I would probably run the MiniMag solids. Take some bulk along. If it runs the bulk, great, if not you have the CCI. If the gun won't run those you have a problem.

My 22/45 gobbles up the Federal bulk. IIRC it likes the Golden Bullets as well. I could be wrong. This morning I tried the Federal "Target" bulk in the 22/45 and 10/22. 150 rounds, zero malfs & the stuff is pretty accurate. The gun also likes Remington Target.

My wife's SIG Mosquito loves the Goldens but Federal bulk (including the "Target" bulk) doesn't have enough oomph to cycle reliably.

I've seen the same reports on Goldens that you have but we have had VERY few problems with ours, and she goes through quite a bit of it.

This.

FTE's usually mean you need to clean the barrel because they are getting stuck with the gunk build-up.

My vote goes for the Federal bulk,, i have several 10/22's along with 2 mkII pistols and a Walther PP , the Federal bulk works in all of them.

Federal bulk pack or the white box match ammo works great in all 22/45 and 10/22.

Some better than others.

Took the 10/22 & the wife's Mosquito down to the range today. The Mosquito gobbled up the Blazer bulk just as it does the Remington Goldens.

Tried some in the 10/22. Too bad I forgot my sandbag... :banghead:

My nephew runs golden bullets through his 22/45 with no problems . I never had problems with Fed bulk in my MK II's. But I hate the Winchester 555 or 333's. They have a waxy coating that gunk's up the action and an odd bullet shape that doesn't always feed.

Amen that.

I've gone through 5 rimfire weapons this year and none of them eats Remington GB's. Not even the Marlin 795 I had lol.

Like Chaos said go for some CCI Blazer, round nose lead ammo or the Federal bulk hollow points. They never cause my rimefire weapons to choke up.

The first ammo i ever shot through my 22/45 and 10/22 were GBs
And didnt try anything else until i went through 1500 rounds of it. My experience with GBs are they are kinda dirty and i dont like how often i find duds. Never has failed to feed or eject. YMMV

I have run a few mags of Rem Goldens through my 22/45 and had a few misfires and one Fail to Feed. I spend another 1/4 of a cent (my guess) to buy Federals, Blazers and Mini-mags for my 22/45 and the 10/22 rife. With those rounds I have had ONE FTF with a Federal and that is out of several thousands of rounds.

Having said bad things about the Remington Golden Bullet, let me say that in my .357 and 9mm I run Remington Golden Saber as my SD choice.

I've had bad luck with Remington ammo in various calibers so I avoid it like the plague. I've had good experiences with CCI, federal bulk, and Winchester in .22lr
