Been a long long while since I've owned any firearms and just getting back into shooting. Looks like a good place to pester folks with questions :D

Picking up a Mossberg 500 combo (field/home protection) tomorrow and a M&P 40 on Thursday...chomping at the bit waiting. Need to find a place for camping overnite and being able to shoot...don't have a four wheeler though so that could be a bit of a problem!

Anyway, nice to be here...

Welcome. We're glad to see you. I'm no help with a camping spot, I'm no where near Palmdale, but we have lots of SoCal members and if you join the SoCal forum and keep trying, someone will help you.

Welcome aboard.

Welcome to the forum.. Good ol Palmdale, Ca. Or as I use to call it Palmdirt Lol.. Was stationed at Edwards for 7 1/2 years and use to drag race at LACR. Nothing like going down the track at over a 100mph and watch the sand blowing across... Welcome aboard!

I'm sure there are...I just gotta find 'em... :D

First and foremost I just want to pop a few rounds without driving blindly all over hell and back so someone familiar with this neck of the woods should be able to point me in the right direction. I don't need to camp out though a night under the stars is always welcome. Aside from that, I'll hit a range...

Between Rosamond and Mojave - this google map even shows some calgun'ers shooting. Please clean up when finished :) This is my favorite place and almost my backyard.

Go north 14 past Rosamond blvd. Get off on Backus and turn left heading west. About 3 miles turn left on Mojave-Tropico heading south. As you are heading south, you will see a mountain range in front of you. When you get almost to the base of these foothills, there is a dirt road heading west. Turn right right on that dirt road heading back west. Follow along the north side of this mountain range (Gem hill). The road will eventually wrap around the west end where the foothills stop. The next two canyons to the south are popular and shown in this map.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Coordinates and maps! Thank you sir...even the gal that handed over my Mossberg this evening said "there are lot's of places to shoot out here"...Well duh ;) If I had a four wheeler I could literally disappear out here and never be heard from again (without intending to).

Thanks GPM..much appreciated. No need to remind about cleanup...what goes in gets packed out whatever I'm doing outdoors, right down to my nasty little cigarette butts :D

MisterSmith, and you can get there in a sedan if you just go slow . . . unless it has been raining.

It's all flat with a few bumps here and there.

Very nice of you. Most people don't give up their spots that easy ;-)

Welcome. I lived in Pompton (Palmdale and Compton squished together) for about 20+ years.

Don't shoot in LA county. Reference to a map if not sure. Best thing is to head to Mojave and find a mountain.

Also, consider Desert Marksman Club. Was going to join but I moved away from the AV. Member only, they give you the combo to the gate lock, go when you want, shoot at night if you want, camp there, etc...Just be careful. When I was talking to the guy about 1.5 years ago there was a mountain lion roaming the area.

Welcome to the forum!

I'm from Rosamond and glassparman is right on. From what I know and have heard, all of Kern County is open shoot, you just need to be 100 yards from a major road and any dwelling. I just found a new place to shoot too. My old spot had/has some bad s**t going on. My new place is off of Backus Rd. and 20th St. W. to the North in those foothills. Just pick a hill to shot into and have fun.

Thank you sir...we went out this morning and it's really not too far from where I live. A half an hour or so and we were skirting the foothills. Unfortunately the place is already trashed :( When I head up there next time I'm bringing extra trash bags. That's about all I can do not having a truck. The place looked like a garbage dump where we stopped and decided to shoot...I guess you could call it the second "bowl" as you come around the west end. Good times though...happy with the M&P 40

Thanks for the specifics regarding location... they were spot on. Much appreciated

Mistersmith, sorry, people are slobs. There was actually a sign up from the local NRA who are also calgunners. The sign was put up right after they cleaned the area up and said that it was cleaned and worked on by the local NRA.

Some Idiots tore the sign down the next week! It makes me sad that our local guys can do all that work and other people can ruin it.

I wish we had a private area but we can only do what we can with what we have.
