View Full Version : Double take on a Mossberg 500 today

Was doing my usual Sunday routine today working with new shooters at my club. A brand new shooter with a brand new, fresh from DROS jail Mossberg 500 sporter was in the mix. Was going to work with him a bit on mounting the gun, basic safety, rules of the range etc. As part of my routine I always give new shooter's guns a look see to make sure there's nothing unsafe. I've had people show up without their choke tubes installed, barrel retainer nuts on pumps loose or missing, stocks on older guns badly cracked etc. etc.

Imagine my surprise when I looked in the ejection port and said, "hey, there's supposed to be a screw in that hole." The ejector and the screw that hold it in were MIA. The gun would have fired, but it wouldn't have shucked a shell. I told the shooter to check the box, but otherwise to call Mossberg first thing tomorrow.

Pretty big miss for Mossberg QA, and a good reminder for us all to give the gun a good visual inspection before you leave the store.
