My interest was piqued in a CMMG AR-15 22LR upper lower combo. I'm thinking about one day moving in to 9mm and maybe 223. The guy at Ammo Bros told me that by swapping out the bold assembly and adding a bullet button it wouldn't have a problem.

Is it as simple as that? It's sort of hard to search for information about 22lr marked lowers.

Is this a dedicated 22 upper with an Ar15 standard lower marked with .22 caliber? Or just a CMMG conversion bolt to convert .223 rifle to .22lr plinker?

If it is a standard AR lower, the caliber markings don't matter. If you switch from rimfire to centerfire, you have to comply with all the CA AW laws, bullet button if you have a pistol grip, flash hider etc., or go featureless.

The .22 dedicated upper is that, can't switch it to shoot .223 without some major work. Easier to buy a spare .223/5.56 upper and switch back on forth.

Right. I was more or less wondering if anybody's actually done a conversion on this particular setup. Its good to hear markings don't matter.

Something like this.

I guess unless somebody knows what they stock, I'll have to go back and check the models they stock.

How much is dealer asking for? Might be cheaper to get a low cost lower and slap on a CMMG dedicated .22lr upper.

The link you provided says the rifle can accept standard AR15 magazines so it can accept a 5.56 upper.

You would have to switch out the entire upper and you'd have to add a buffer and spring to the stock (i'm assuming they don't come with it since .22 doesn't need it).

The lower will accept any milspec upper (assuming you comply with the AW laws).

The CMMG uppers rock. I just built my .22lr AR and the first 100 rounds I fired the other day were 100% flawless.

I think they wanted $650 or $700 for it. Which sounds very reasonable to me. I don't want to cheap out necessarily. Off riflegear.com, part prices I see are $400 for the 22lr upper. I guess about $200 if I want to build a lower on a stamped receiver. But it looks like CMMG stripped lowers are $200 bucks alone.

They do have a $100 plastic lower (LW-15) which is interesting. At $500, that totally makes the M&P-15/22 pointless. They are pretty close to me. I might pop down.

Looks like ATI sells an 22LR upper with a mag for about $320. Plus $100 plastic reciever and $20 scope = $440.

no problems at all as long as you do the BB when doing the centerfire.

i do this very thing with my Spikes ST-22 and 5.56 uppers

The CMMG 22LR upper has a 1:16 twist barrel. I 223/5.56 usually is 1:7 or 1:9. In order to go to 223 you would have to have a new BCG and Ejection port cover. I have the M4LE 22LR upper and it is very good quality. I am not around to check if the barrel has M4 feed ramps though.

That actually wasn't what I was thinking about converting a 22LR upper, but that is also an interesting idea.

The CMMG at Ammo Bros is $650 which I think is a good deal. But, I went ahead and put a Frontier Armory LW-15 in jail. I had some cash burning a whole in my wallet.

I'm just going to wait around and see if any deals pop up for a 22LR or a 9mm (or a 223 and a conversion kit).

ahh well I highly recommend the CMMG M4LE 22LR upper. it is reasonably priced and uses a standard milspec upper and takes mil spec accessories like Magpul MOE handguards. I also like that mags are easier to find unlike m&p 15-22 and mossberg 22's. Much cheaper to shoot than 9mm or 5.56.

I love my CMMG uppers... I'd also suggest checking out Tim @ TACCOM3G. He's got complete uppers that are ULTRA light weight and will go onto any standard AR-15 lower.

Any word on how the taccom3g uppers work with the LW-15 lower? Needs different hammer?

I would email or call TACCOM3G (Tim)... That said, I think there's a sticky about it in this forum and I believe with all dedi uppers you need a new hammer.

I have a CMMG dedicated .22LR upper. I didn't need to make any changes to the dedicated lower. It used the exact same LPK, buffer, buffer tube, and hammer as 5.56 centerfire.

I had a BB on mine in the off chance I decided to toss on a centerfire upper in the future.

A standard LPK will work, but the LPKs that come in the polymer lowers need a different hammer to get enough force on the primer.

I'm using Cmmg complete upper with lw-15 lower. Ar style mags from black dog machine. Worked great not one jam. Shooting bulk Winchester hollow points. Shot about 400 rounds. Later in the day I switched my upper to my 5.56 Bcm with no other change. Also worked great. Shot about 150 rounds.
Love it. I just bring one bag,one lower 2 uppers and ammo.
