Hello , I just wanted to start a discussion on what guns/calibers you guys all would use if SHTF. I would use my ruger .22, 12 gauge, and 9mm.

I have my G17 as my sidearm.
My 642 as back up (Been thinking of switching to G26 for compatability)
My AR15 as my primary
My 870 as back up to primary/secondary/hand out
My M44 as long range/back up/hand out rile

The calibers I currently stock are 9mm (1000 rounds) 5.56 (1000 rounds) 12 G (225 00 Buck and 25 Slugs) 7.62x54R (440 Rounds)

Im trying to get to 2000 for 5.56 and once I get my 10/22 Takedown I will stock pile at least 3000-4000 (how ever much fits in a .30 cal ammo can)

My SHTF gun is the one I can get to first because, well, SHTF.

If I can afford some time to select...for carry I would probably grab my Sig P229 and my AR which seems more appropriate in the urban environment (downtown LA) I live.

It depends on how hard the SHTF and how long it is going to last.

Are you going to be in a "static defensive position" where you are holding up or are you going to be moving.

One thing you can figure on is you won't get resupplied with ammo.

For handguns, I would have a 9mm or 40 cal.
A 45 cal is optional.

You have to figure you won't be able to go to Wally to buy more ammo.

You will need an AR in .223, common caliber.

A pump action shotgun, 12 guage of course.

If you are mobile, you have to consider weight, if you are in a static defensive position, you have to consider maintaining a low profile to limit attention that may be drawn to your "hideout".

Non gun items to consider.

Knives
Bow and arrows, cross bows.

The only SHTF situation I can imagine is getting caught out of the area after a LARGE Earthquake that tumbles buildings, cracks roads, drops overpasses, cuts electrical and certainly some cell towers. Fires will be started and out of control, looters will break into stores for food; later into Target and Walmart for the usual expensive stuff they can steal. Local gangs will be roaming in certain areas and decisions would have to be made to either travel towards home or hunker down for the night.

I have a get home bag with some food, water and supplies for about 3 days. My only firearms are one GLOCK 20SF with 5 extra 15 round magazines and a Glock 19 with 1 extra magazine. (15 round, 9mm). I do change out handguns depending on my mood.

No rifles, no shotgun. I have comfortable shoes and a parka with hood. The handguns have holsters as well.

I do refill my tank when it gets down to half. I suspect I would do my best to drive home depending on the route.

That's it.

EDIT..another idea would be to check into a full service hotel for a while. Watch the riots and unrest on TV and travel when safe.

.22. 9mm 12 gauge..223/5.56. 762x54r. Actually 7.62x39 wouldn't be a bad idea due to the mass amount in stores now. Reason behind my thinking.

.22. You can stock a lot. Also conversion kits for the g17 and ar to go to .22.

12 gauge packs a punch. Ammo everywhere.

7.62. Cheap

It is about time someone brought this up... such an underdiscussed topic.

In a so called 'SHTF' situation..

A few folks will arm themselves and hunker down.

A few will arm themselves and bug out.

A LOT will give up or surrender IMMEDIATELY.

Most pseudo-tactical wannabes will throw down their weapons and raise the white flag as soon as they run out of food, get injured, get cold/hot/tired, or can't get a WIFI signal anymore.

Oh look its the daily shtf loadout thread. Ok sure ill bite. A 20mm anti zombie rifle, with a lazer zoom scope. It also has a .22lr upper that when sprinkled with pixie dust will accept any caliber. As well as a lightsaber for my melee. Oh ya and my fiance, when I run out of ammo for my rifle she will just nag the undead hoards and they will just kill themselves.

A handgun is the first on the list.Small easy to conceal and I am sure a rifle will not be proper is some instances where a concealed pistol would make sense . A rifle? heck yeah 223 semi auto couldn't hurt along with spare ammo. Food and water and other supplies are just as important.

a hand gun is your first resort. Hopefully you will be defending yourself in day to day activities not attacking others.

Scenario 1) Something bad like protracted civil unrest and need to get out of Dodge. My buddies and our families are heading to the mountain cabin. We pack heavy so the list of what we have is long. But we only use common calibers .223, .308, 30-06, 12ga, .22, .45acp, .40sw, 9mm, .38spl- not just for tactical reasons we are also cheap/frugal and anything you can't find at big5/walmart is going to be expensive.
Scenario 2) Civil unrest and have to stay in Dodge (employers don't like employess taking sudden vacations when Occupy wall street bums get a case of rabies) then we have several homes that are castles and we use whatever tools are in those castles. Which range from M1A/AR10 down to Ruger 10/22's (don't laugh a ten year old girl under cover up using a .22 can keep some OWS rabids looking for cover while the rest of the family buttons up )
Scenario 3)Earthquake/sudden riot and I am work (most likely scenario) I keep a small bug out back pack that caliber wise holds a .45 with 3 unloaded mags and 50 rounds of ammo (the particular .45 is dependent on mood). In a sports bag I keep a MB500 12ga with a folding ATI stock and two ammo carrier/side saddle holding 11 rds) a cable lock goes through the action and locks to the truck frame behind back seat and I keep a mini back pack with 25 rds of 12ga ammo. If I am feeling really paranoid I keep a KelTec su16 in another sports bag and it has a cable going through the action to the frame...I carry three loaded 30rd mags in the bug out bag. When I come to work the back pack comes with me (I have my own office). I keep spare tennis shoes, boots, socks, a small tent, a large medkit, several REI scrunchable jackets of sizes for my family, and some tools and the like for emergencies (all fit behind my Tundra's back seat).

It depends on if it is a Zombie SHTF, an epic SHTF!!!!!! or a measly run of the mill shtf situation.

Irregardless, (I know that's not a real word but I like it.) go with what's available at WalMart for ammo & caliber choices. That way, you don't have the logistics problem a foreign invader would have trying to get ammo for his GI 9.3mm rimfire Martini shootzenblammer.

Then something light weight and compact that shares magazines with above rifle ( S&W 6904):

Then buy lots of magazines.

I just wish people would stop using the expression SHTF. Some people love to throw that phrase around so much it's obnoxious. I dunno why but the SHTF bandwagon just killlls me. Nothing wrong with preparing, it's just the overuse of the expression that's annoying.

I can't help imagining some urban commando with a bunch of weapons...lathering himself up, caressing his weapons..just in awe of how bichin' and prepared for the end of times he thinks he is...how it is going to be some sort of Mad Max Call of Duty type situation.

Skills: general (survival) knowledge of firearms. What if there is devastation and the only weapons you can get are "from the cold dead hands" of others? You'll have to use what you find, borrow or steal. You will need to know what it is and how to use it.

Wish I had a Tank.

^^Sorry guys, but this is correct. You guys would be saving a lot of money if you just bought a suicide pill instead of a bunch of guns.

Personally, as long as I have two arms, I'll be double fisting, using a 12g in one and some type of 7.62 in the other.

There is a lot of defeatist bull**** in these SHTF threads. Its all about desperately squeaking by and living on raw squirrel meat and old MREs. My SHTF plans involve being the brutal warlord-king of Greater Norwalkistan. I've already been building some armor out of some football pads and homemade chainmail and stockpiling supplies to print my own money. Next on my list is a gold plated desert Eagle, .50 AE is the obvious goto caliber for a post apocalyptic warlord.

If the S hits the F I'd be talking to my neighbors and asking them how we can help and support each other. Who takes watch and does the gathering for food and water. I'm sure it will depend on where you live, but if you live in the big cities fending off looters will be the biggest problem. New Orleans had that problem and the government made it worst.

Stick with common calibers such as 9mm, 40 S&W, 45ACP, 38 spl and 357 mag, 12 gauge, 223 Rem and 308 win.

If you ended up picking up 50AE just make sure you take the gun too.
:D;)
