Long story short I have a gift card for Big 5 sporting goods and am not sure what long gun I am going to buy from them. I figure that my fellow Calguns members can help me make up my mind. Big 5 doesn't sell pistols and their ammo prices are kinda high so I'm just looking at their shotguns and rifles. Any ideas?

I already have semi auto centerfires, a bolt action .22, mossberg 500 (maverick88), and a mosin of course.

I know they have ruger 10/22s on sale every once in a while... but I also don't have any scoped hunting rifles. But also they have a few coach guns there that would be fun.

So what would you guys buy if you had just under 100 bucks to buy from big5? (rifle/shotgun)

Pick up a ruger 10/22 or maybe if they have a marlin 60, pick that up. The scoped rifles will probably be out of the range for the amount you are wanting to spend.

I know I sound stupid by saying this, buy another mosin never hurts :D

100 bucks can pay for about half of a rifle there. Ill be paying the rest...
I'm not on too much of a budget either. But I'm thinking below 500 if at all

The sale price of their 10/22s are still higher than many other places' normal price. Marlin 795s are under $200 there though.

If you don't have a 10/22, your collection needs one before it will ever be complete. Just sayin'

Last time I was at Big5, I saw the break-open single-shot Rossi 12ga and 20ga were around $119+fees/tax. Debated getting one for fun, but put them oney towards other projects.

10/22 is a good choice. And everyone can always use another Mosin. :D

I don't care for Big 5 much

But if I had $100.00 I had to blow there

I'd get a pair of electronic ear muffs, probably those Howard Leight Impact Sport

find a mauser or a mauser type rifle at any ig 5 and drop some of your own cash as well to the gift card

Big 5 occasionally has a mossberg or maverick I'm tempted to get

True - but look for an old one that doesn't have a plastic trigger group and mag release or a finish that will wipe off with solvent.

I'd pick up an 870 skeet gun or something similar.

Forgot about the Marlin 795. Also the Mini14 or SKS as well. :)

Get the 10/22 or the Savage hunting rifle.

Big 5 puts out coupons for discount, even for guns and gun related purchases. search the internet for discount coupons prior to making a decision of what to buy. gun prices at Big 5 are not always optimal for the buyer, but perhaps with discount price, gift certificate and added monies... a gun purchase that makes sense may be available there.

if it was my deal, i'd probably check out the Ruger 10/22 as Ron-Solo and others have suggested; i'd be most interested in a stainless version. i'd have to look at the Mini-14, and if the price was right... that's where my money most likely would want to go.

If you don't have your heart set on a particular rifle or shotgun, you could use it towards a spotting scope. Personally, I'd get a Marlin 795.

You could go for accessories:

bore snake
gun sock (protect against humidity, etc.)
carrying case
range box
scope
red dot
bore sight
hearing protector
gun vise/rest
targets
spotting scope
sling
range finder

Made me think - I don't personally know anyone that doesn't have a 10/22.

I guess I should have more diversity in my circle of friends.

I'm thinking about getting a second one to do a heavy barrel build with a Boyds TactiCool stock.

OP, go with the 10/22

$100 at Big 5? Hmmmm.... maybe a couple boxes of .45ACP WWB...

Naahh... I'd probably look at a Mosin. ;)

My buddy has a 410 he bought from there and had the barrel shortened to 18", that thing sure is fun. But if I went that route I feel like I should get the exposed hammer coach gun in 12 gauge.

Yes I'm actually a big fan of the maverick line, after years of owning my 88.

Forgot about the Marlin 795. Also the Mini14 or SKS as well. :)
Owned both mini14 and sks, now only own the mini 14.

Get the 10/22 or the Savage hunting rifle.
The 10/22 was the most reasonable firearm to get there I thought. Seems like everyone says they are accurate and reliable. But the only ones I see on sale are the takedown model and the tactical and I can't justify the extra money for a flash hider or to split my gun in half. I COULD wait...
The thought of their savage ?model 11? or axis seems nice but if I buy another savage I'm going to want the accutrigger- that trigger is darn near perfect.
And the many mosin posts, I own the mosin carbine, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another mosin carbine in a split second. Not too much of a fan of the 91/30s. They can order guns right? I saw that savage hog hunter on the savage website..... looks sweet.

As for the other items, I already have all the cleaning, storage, range accessories I need for the guns I own atm. Not really interested in spending my money on much else there.

Big 5 does special orders on long guns as well. If there's something else your looking for, maybe get a quote and put the gift card towards that.

I myself would get another Mosin but I would not get a 91/30 . I would hold out for a m38 or see if they can order you one . I was in the same situation and I ended up just getting a new Rifle case and a new spotting scope (already have enough mosins). I could go for another m38 though. Those things are a blast to shoot.

Ill have to go in there and see what they can order. I'm sure they don't have any m38s though, as expensive as they are on the used market id say they have dried up for the most part.

i have to vote 10/22, its one of my favorite guns to shoot since .22 is cheap

the Ruger 10/22 Takedown is one i'm going to look closely at in the near future; i really like the concept, and it's time was due. i didn't know that Big 5 carried the Takedown model. for me, it would be a prospective candidate for purchase.

100 bucks. A Crossman 1322 or 1377 and 40 bucks worth of pellets. Build yourself a cheap pellet trap and you can practice in your own home.

I just got a Savage 17HMR. I Love it, it's a tack driver at 100 yards. Your card should pay for about half then get yourself a BSA sweet 17 scope from Natchez and you'll be in there for about $300.

went to Big 5 today and looked at the Ruger 10/22 Takedown. the current online coupons that i saw excluded firearms, and the sale price of $369.99 was too steep.

nice looking rifle.

I guess I should have more diversity in my circle of friends.

No it's just cus every safe has a 10/22 in it.

OP I'd also say a 10/22 or mini 14. I own both and love them. The mini is the best choice if you're not into black rifles. I have the new style and hit stuff at 200yrds no problem. Don't listen to the anti mini 14 hype. It's a good gun.

As for the 10/22 what can I say that hasn't been said forever. Best 22 in my book. You can find every kind of mod under the sun. My 10/22 hits 3" steel at 80yrds every time and runs like a champ.

As for big 5 their prices suck. I know you have a gift card so you're stuck. I did a lot of shopping there when I wanted my mini 14 and their sale prices are at most stores everyday price. I got the all weather Mini for the same price they wanted for the standard blued/wood one. If you're going to be buying there wait till it goes on sale. They will usually tell you when something will go on sale if you ask.

You guys are great. I stopped by a big 5 today randomly way away from my neighborhood and the manager said he could give me the sale price of 279 for the ruger 10/22 stainless... I think ill go into my local store and try to get it for the same price. The rear sight is kinda funky with the small notch inside the big notch, but I'm sure I can upgrade for some williams fire sights like my other .22.
As for the mini 14 comment, I love my current mini 14, the thing is great!

ask for the sale price on the wood and black 10/22. paying the extra money for the stainless barrel and synthetic stock proved to be pointless to me after i changed the stock and barrel almost right away.

if you dont plan on touching it, its fine though.

I'm not one to mod my guns all that much at all. I want a solid shooter right out of the box, and I think the 10/22 is; albeit there are so many upgrades, I'm going to keep it fairly stock.

And I think the stainless barrel would look sweet with a regular wood stock. I bet i can find someone who would trade or sell their old wood stock.
