Can someone tell me, or better yet, show me, where to find the code that regulates selling a CA (California) "AW" to an out of state person? Since it is NOT an "AW" outside of CA, should be no problem, but that is my non-legal logic...
Anyone been down this road, or know how to do this right/legally?
NOTE: Buyer is not in another state where the firearm is banned or restricted either.

You can drive it out of state yourself which is easy, but you cannot just mail it. You have to go thru an FFL that has an AW license, you'll be charged 50~100 on average on top of the shipping just to have it mailed out.
You'd be better off just keeping it 9 out of 10 times IMHO...

Firearms that are registered AWs must go thru the services of a CA FFL holding a CA AW permit to be shipped or received. If you want to sell your AW, it generally (see exception below) must similarly go thru a CA FFL w/AW permit.
[Firearms that are unregistered AWs are radioactive and should not be touched let alone shipped/received by Californians or ordinary CA FFLs !!]
If you don't want to ship your reg'd AW using these services, you can indeed drive with it or fly with it out of and back into CA.
Unlike Category I & II 'banned-by-name' AWs, Category III 'by features' AWs can have requisite evil features removed until the firearm is not an AW. After this point, the firearm/receiver can be transported or shipped to any FFL as an ordinary firearm. If such a firearm/receiver is returned back to you, it can be reassembled into AW status as it's, of course, a reg'd AW. An FFL gunsmith should be made aware - in writing! - that when he is shipping such a firearm back to you, it should not be assembled with various evil features.

#15 I do not want to keep my assault weapon. What do I do?
If you have an unregistered assault weapon, you must relinquish it to law enforcement.
If you have a registered assault weapon that you no longer want to keep, you have three options:
1. Sell the weapon to a licensed gun dealer who has an assault weapons permit; or
2. Make arrangements with your local police or sheriff's office to relinquish your assault weapon. CALL FIRST. DO NOT GO TO THE POLICE OR SHERIFF'S OFFICE WITHOUT FIRST MAKING ARRANGEMENTS; or
3. Remove the weapon from this state.

Or take it out of state for storage, but they won't tell you that.

The link from Shane pretty much sums it up.
Thanks!

The DOJ link posted is somewhat out of date/of limited correctness in that it doesn't say you can sell it out of state via direct transportation, or that Cat III AWs can have features removed and sold as non-AWs even in CA.
My answer posted above is the full, correct and complete one.
