The guys out here are killing rabbits. The first morning had 6 successful hunters, so far!! Many of them are first time kills! Yesterday evening was good as well.

Rabbits are on ice and the hunt continues...

Here's VFX_man with his two day take:

Day one was a Jack and a Cottontail taken within seconds of each other! He dropped them both, clean with his shotgun:

Just got home....:driving:..... First off I want to thank EVERYBODY who showed up to attended this get together Rabbit shoot. Last year the attendance was only 6 this year attendance was 20. Weather was a tad warm, skeeters were not too bad, Rabbits were ok, not great but good enough for most everyone to get a shot or two and even collect a few rabbits. I met some really good people, made some new friends I think?..:D and had a terrific time. EDITED

More, the last one is a spot where I spotted a Bear for a while, he was about 1000 yrds away SUPER cool! The Bear was in the lighter path of green foliage in the middle, he snuck out into the trees or laid down for a nap.

Just got home, the hunt was awesome!!! Fellow Calgunners were awesome and friendly. I met some real nice people and hope to hunt with them again. Special thanks to Eric and Jim(TOBY) who were extremely friendly and informative. For new hunters(like myself) who feel intimidated, fear not everyone is more than willing to help you out. I got two Cotton Tails and two Jack Rabbits, only casualty was my front bumper. Great time cant wait to do it again.

I would say good, safe, and productive group outing. You guys should all thank Toby and Eric for taking the risk of meeting up with a bunch of guys with guns that that doesn’t really know great job you two. You can't please everybody, again thanks for being enthusiastic ambassadors for hunting. Thanks for sharing.

It's a Springfield M6 scout. It is a 22 long rifle on top barrel and a 410 shotgun on the bottom barrel kinda hard to see that oh and it folds up and carries extra ammo in the stock. Ask him about it it's a cool deal.

I think that is the springfield M6 Scout Survival Rile. Google it for better images.

I got home a couple of hours ago. The drive home wasn't so bad, except for the three quick pull-offs I had to do because I had ticks crawling up my arm, on my face and inside my shirt!!

It was a blast hanging out with everyone and getting to see all the new hunters getting their rabbits! I think most everyone hunted really hard, with every kind of weapon you can think of. From hiddenNdangerous's 22 Long Rifle/shotgun over-and-under, to VFX_man's Weatherby Mark XXII (.22 semi-auto); there were guns of every kind blazing up there in the desert!

This morning I hit an area that one of the local guys researched and keyed us in on. I took my Thompson Contender 5mm Rimfire out and cleaned up on a bunch of rabbits. I also had the strangest thing happen when I walked back to pick-up two other dead Jack Rabbits I got and marked by making a semi-circle in the sand. Both were GONE. I had got one earlier and one an hour or so later. Bummed me out, but also tells me there is a brazen predator out there!

I got one on the first evening that was a group effort because my 200 yard 153 yard shot was a lot closer than I originally thought!! :o Thanks to the group that helped me find him and his ear that was sitting a couple of feet away (I'm going to have that reattached for my full-body, Jack Rabbit mount).

Here's a couple of pictures of today's kills. Most shots were between 75 and 100 yards, with the two cottontail being around 60 yards:

Two first thing in the morning:

http://www.varminter.com/images/cgnhunt2012/Eric-5mm-Remington-Rabbit-Hunt-001.jpg

A bit later in the morning:
http://www.varminter.com/images/cgnhunt2012/Eric-5mm-Remington-Rabbit-Hunt-002.jpg

On my drive back to the motel to use their cleaning facilities (much nicer than on the tailgate of the truck, or the ground):

http://www.varminter.com/images/cgnhunt2012/Eric-5mm-Remington-Rabbit-Hunt-003.jpg

Here's one of the two cottontails I got as well:

http://www.varminter.com/images/cgnhunt2012/Eric-5mm-Remington-Rabbit-Hunt-004.jpg

I'll put up more graphic pictures later on my site.

I also wanted thank Jim ("Toby") for putting this together once again. He really pulled this together and was constantly driving around helping out and giving advice to folks who were hunting. He deserves come serious Kudos for this hunt!

Also, to all the new guys (and gals), it was great hunting, chatting, etc with you! Everyone was safe, polite and helped each other out! It was nice hunting with folks and being totally relaxed, because you knew everyone was being real safe and watching out for everyone while hunting!

Lastly, we need a total count for the title of this thread! Post up your numbers and any pictures!

Eric

A HUGE thanks to Toby for putting this whole thing together. I've planned get-togethers for various groups and know full well what a hassle it can be and how hit or miss people are about actually showing up.

I came out with my son, my girlfriend and her son and everyone had a fantastic time. My son got two Saturday evening and four this morning, all with his "new" (to him) Winchester 24, I got two this morning and hopefully washed the stench of hunting failure from me and my girlfriend's son got his first rabbit. All were jacks, but all were dressed and thrown in the cooler. As soon as I catch my breath I'm going to quarter them and put them in some brine for a day or two to see if we can make something edible with them.

Never cooked jack rabbit before. But with turkey legs/ thighs, squirrels and crappy deer cuts. I just throw it in a crock pot all day, season it good first and add chili peppers, garlic, onion , stewed tomatoes, etc. then make burritos out of it.

Mikey that rifle, as many have rightly identified, is a M6 scout. It is supposed to be a survival rifle, but hunting rabits with it is super fun as long as you keep your shots under 75 yards. Here some better pics.

Thanks again to all, I wish I would/could have spent more time with each one of you but I was more concerned with the safety distance margin between hunters and shooters, accidents are not a pretty thing to see. Overall everyone did their part and no accidents took place, I hope you can all make the August hunt and those that missed this one please try to make the next..... Eric, thanks for all of your support and guidance with the hunt as well as the shirts and decals.

Dude, what happened?

I talked to a ranger a few weeks before the hunt on the phone who said that you could drive to the rattlesnake campsite. Turns out it is a 9 mile hike. So we couldn't hunt that area which is the only area that I had maps for. On a good note I met a guy who may be calling me when he is up at his ranch in Mendocino and might let me hunt his land.
