I'm more of a salt water guy.. any tips on what to use in that area?

Not going off a boat.. will most likely do the pier or shore. The kids are 5 and this is thier first fishing trip.

Ideas on bait or gear? Or ideas on good spots.

Going to pick them up a spin-cast reel and rod combo..

Light fishing pole
4-8lb test line
1/2 oz egg weights
2-3 packs of #10 hooks
small split shot
Power Bait

Put a sinker on the line, tie on a hook, pull about 18-24" between the sinker and the hook, crimp a slit shot in front of the sinker to stop it from sliding forward.

Bait with a ball of Power bait just big enought so that the bait will float. Ckeck it in the water before you cast

Hope the kids have fun and catch a limit

North shore, dont cast in the hidden weeds(you will no when you reel in)4lbs fluorocarbon leader ,try 2-4ft leader and half oz wheight huck it out there then small leader normal cast see where they are at . Go from the dam to fawnskin. Somewhere between is a nice flat area with bathrooms good for kids but show up eary for a spot
