Can you guys post your SPX's and what modifications you had done. So far I know for sure I want to get a Nordic charging handle and the Nordic clamp. Trying to decide if I should get a side saddle and what sling to get.

Nordic Clamp + Rail
Nordic Charging Handle
Streamlight TLR-1s + Remote Battery Door + Remote Pressure Switch
Elite Tactical Safety
Elite Tactical Lime Green Follower (I believe is Delrin? Or another high-grade polymer)

No sling for HD (easy to snag while moving)

Will order Mesa SureShell 6 carrier soon

But you've seen mine already :)

Beautiful! Let us know the range report!
Also I'm interested to know if your gas piston has a spinning ring that you can take off to clean or if they have in fact made the piston and ring one piece now.

We are working on an Urbino Pistol Grip stock for the Mossberg 930. This is more complicated than usual because the factory recoil spring tube is far too long. So we need to use the factory recoil spring compressed about an inch and a half shorter. Mossberg said this probably isn't a big deal, so we first ran some tests with the factory stock, but with the back of the spring moved forward:

http://www.mesatactical.com/images/313.jpg

We took it out to Burro Canyon and shot a bunch of stuff through it and had no problems.

Then we got the prototype stock made. Now we had to cut down the recoil spring tube to fit in the stock. We took it out to the range on Saturday:

http://www.mesatactical.com/images/320.jpg

We experienced double feeds with low brass bird shot, but buck and slugs ran flawlessly. One of the guys we were shooting with, who works for Homeland Security, said this was an issue common to Mossberg 930s, that they ran best with tactical loads, not low brass bird shot.

Does that sound right?

Full details of project here (http://www.mesatactical.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1144).

It does sound right.
Even low recoil buckshot (notoriously Fiocchi LR 00 Buckshot) has issues.
While mine doesn't have issues feeding birdshot, it doesn't cycle properly.
Did you clean out the gas system before each range test? Seems to help.
Anything I can do to help with the Urbino Stock PM me.
Very excited for it.

I shoot wally box through mine all the time. I have yet to have a failure. It may have more to do with changing the recoil tube

No, I shot pretty much only birdshot out of mine and have yet to experience a malfunction. The birdshot has ranged from the sale deals at Big 5 to whatever Wallyworld has. Even 100 rounds of the the dreaded Winchester Universal 8 worked fine.

I've had the opportunity to shoot both the M4 and 930SPX a bunch. IMO the Benelli is a much better shotgun. Yes the M4 costs more as well.

Having said that, neither of these will ever replace my pump Mossberg for home defense.

Yes, you're right about that. I got it mainly because if it ever goes to SHTF then it will definitely be useful. I will not put shells in them at the range though. It does give it a Zombie slayer look though;)

What did you have to do in order to get the afg to mount?

awiner
04-15-2013, 1:19 PM
You need to mount a picatinny rail to the bottom of the fore end.

Problem is you need to do this without interfering with the piston assembly inside.

04-15-2013, 1:49 PM
Yes I am aware of that. Hence the question of what was needed to get it to mount.

I messed up the first time I mounted the rail, so I just got back to it and tried again. Filled the old holes in with JB Weld and it will never bust. If I wanted to make it factory fresh, I could probably just buy a new handguard for 20 bucks.

I'm still waiting on that urbino stock. I have a video of me shooting slugs at 25 yards. First time shooting the gun, and I was all over the paper but man was it awesome. Shredded the target. Gun was deadnuts accurate out of the box too. It was too bad I wasn't behind the gun, almost blew out my shoulder lol. I'll have to host it on YouTube later.

i brought mine down to socal a month ago.. and surpasses the hand full of dirt thrown on it test. as lube i only grease the rails. after the hand full of dirt it was indeed very gritty and felt a bit sluggish but didnt get any failures. i love it and out of the all the guns we brought out everyone wanted next after dumping the first mag tube.

I have had trouble with mine so far, some failures and sluggish but still have hopes it will run, but I have to be honest I bought it for home defense and now I don't trust it so I bought a 590 to fill the bill.

I picked up my 930 SPX Blackwater version a day before a 2 day shotgun class. Only had time to add a sling before the class. Shot 450 rounds of bird, buck and slug through it right out of the box without even cleaning it.

The gun ran flawlessly but the XS sights on that version were not designed to handle the shock and vibration of a shotgun. The front sight flew off after about 50 rounds and I never found it again. The rear sight kept coming loose so I would crank the screws down on it about every hour.

The accuracy and consistency of the gun were great though. Even without the front sight I was getting about 90% hit rate on steel at 100 yards. It cycled very fast when we were doing speed/stress drills.

Mossberg sent me a new front sight, no problem and I cranked it and the rear sight down with red Locktite. Added a rail to the front right side of barrel and will add a Surefire light with pressure pad to that. Also planning to add the Mesa Tactical side shell carrier. Will post pic when done.

I had trouble with metal side saddles that replaced the trigger group pins to hold it in place, for some reason it caused failure to eject and no semi auto action. So went with shotgun shell cards and velcro instead, which I find a really great solution.
