View Full Version : Where to purchase 1-lb cans of powder in San Jose area?

It's time to start experimenting with a few powders so I wanted to pick up a several 1-lb cans, and maybe some primers, locally. Closest to me are Reeds, Sportsman's Supply, Kerley's and the Gun Vault, and was wondering if anyone could recommend one over the other (or suggest another) in terms of likely price. I'd like to keep my driving around to a minimum.

Thanks.

Try the phone book?? You don't even need the book, you can do everything over the net. I need some AA1680, I'll have to call around to find it, get the current price and availability.

Thanks for that suggestion. A little far to drive for what I want to pick up today, but I'll definitely be checking them out more closely when I'm ready to scale up.

Of the shops you mentioned, Reed's has the best selection of powders. The gun Vault has a lot of empty containers on display, but hardly ever has any of the commonly used powders in stock.

Reeds may have powder, but unless you're really hard up for powder, prepare to get bent over.

I'm curious. What's the going price for 1lb cans of powder in that area? Most shops near me are $25 to $27 for most kinds.

$30/lbs

typical pricing for a 8 lbs jug of Varget is 120-135

that works out to almost double if bought locally

In my experience, he doesn't pick up the phone or return calls.

He complains constantly that the folks who call him never leave a name or number. You might be different (why would you admit to leaving a message without your name and number?) but apparently he gets lots of calls he simply cannot return.

Reeds sells powder for $29.99 a can. GBB is significantly cheaper, but unless you are getting more than 2 1lb cans the cost will be eaten up by gas. They are often at the SJ gunshow which makes things nice and easy, you tell them what you want and they bring it to the show.

Call Sportsman's Supply in Campbell (San Jose) and see what they might have before you go down there unless you are close to them.

If I recall it is about $30/lb here, too. Reed's sells primers by the 100 so if you are just experimenting this may be the way to go.

When you guys buy in bulk, maybe post to share hazmat? I'm not quite ready, myself but I thought I put it out there since many are in the same area of SJ.

I just use Grafs. They only charge $5 shipping and $27 handling fee for both powder and primer. In the end it usually is cheaper than driving far or going to the gunshow.

prices in the bay area vary a lot and the cheaper shops are in the east bay. old west gun room and traders are cheaper than the south bay and peninsula shops, about the same prices as online (including shipping and hazmat) but you don't need to buy 8 lbs...

I've only called a handful of times and he answered each time. I guess I'm just lucky. (now if only I could win the lottery) :)

I called him a little while after the suggestion was posted and he answered. Unfortunately he didn't have what I was looking for in stock (actually neither did anyone else), but I'll definitely give him another try when I'm looking for supplies in the future.

Sportsmans Supply in Cambell, on Cambell Ave. Between Bascom & 17.
So far they've had everything I was looking for in 1 pounders, and lots I wasn't looking for. Alliant, Hodgdon, IMR, Winchester.... They don't carry any brass though and it would help me if they did. Makes me wonder why would you not supply brass or other components if you do supply lots of powders? But overall I really like the shop and the help is decent.
I'll be going there soon to pick up some H4895, and I live in Fremont so I think they are worth the drive.
