HERCULES -- Students at Lupine Hills Elementary School in Hercules were evacuated from their school around 1:30 p.m. Monday following a police-ordered lockdown during the pursuit of three armed suspects in the area.
The incident began with home invasion robbery at a residence near the school. According to Police Chief Fred Del Torchio, a homeowner was attacked by three armed assailants who forced the homeowner at gunpoint to open a safe containing a large supply of firearms.
The suspects took the guns and loaded them into the trunk of their car, but thanks to a good description of the suspect vehicle and suspects, police were able to initiate a pursuit.
The suspect vehicle crashed into a mailbox, leading the assailants to leave the car, take the guns from the trunk and flee on foot. They have been located by police at a residence in the area of Lupine and Dogwood. Police have set up a perimeter around the residence and brought in crisis negotiators and SWAT to hopefully bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.
West Contra Costa Unified School District spokesman Paul Ehara said police called the school at about 11:50 a.m. warning them to lockdown as a precautionary measure.
Students were transported from the school to the Hercules Swim Center at 2001 Refugio Valley Road in Hercules, across the street from the Hercules Middle/High School, according to Ehara.
"Hercules police arranged for buses to transport the students to the Hercules Swim Center as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff, and at approximately 1:30 p.m. students and stag began to board buses for the move," Ehara said in a prepared statement.
