View Full Version : How is the Colt 6920 LE legal even with a BB?

I just spent some time reading up on existing laws, and I don't see how the Colt 6920 LE is legal in CA even with a BB.

It is listed as a Category 2 weapon by the CA DOJ.

Yet I see some websites selling a LE6920CMP-B to CA....

Anyone wanna help me out with the legal argument that I seem to be missing?

The CA legal variants are not marked law enforcement or 6920 on the receiver.
Therefore, under the letter of the law, as long as they are properly configured, they are CA legal.

The Colt LE6920CMP-B is marked (make) Colt (model) M4 Carbine on the receiever.
(make) Colt (model) M4 Carbine is not make/model listed as a banned firearm, therefore it can be configured to be CA legal.

Interesting!

Has this theory (e.g. changing a model number/marking) been held up by a CA appeals court?

It's not theory, it is CA case law [Harrot v. County of Kings (2001)].
Courts determined that the firearm had to match the exact make & model of the firearm that was banned as an assault weapon.

This case law and the CA legislature removing the CA DOJ's ability to add firearms to the make/model assault weapons ban list in 2006, is the reason why the "off-list lower" movement was able to take off.

Everything said above is 100% correct. I just sold my two LE6920CMP-B. No where on the firearm are the words "Law Enforcement" or "6920". They are off list lowers.

The "Colt: Law Enforcement (6920)" model is on the Cat 2 list.
This is the markings on the 6920LE that is named as a Cat.2 AW:

The current 6920's are not "Law Enforcement" models.
This is the currently available Colt model, that is NOT named by make and model:
"M4 Carbine" is the actual model of the gun.
