My nieces aged 7 and 10 want me to take them fishing this week and I was wondering if there was somewhere within an hour or so of the SF Bay Area (specifically, the Peninsula) where I can take them? Preferably trout fishing and if it's a lake, somewhere where we can fish from the bank. I used to fish quite a bit in streams, rivers and lakes when I lived up in Oregon, but haven't fished down here in CA. I did get my fishing license, so I'm good to go, but I just need a place to take them.

Thanks!

Is Parkway outside SJ still around? If so check it out.

It's getting a little warm for trout right now . . . Lake Chabot might be your best bet. Head straight across the San Mateo Bridge and you're almost there. Rent a boat.

Lake Merced is a little too urban for me. Plus the last 2 trout I caught there were feeding on cigarette butts . . . Their little Tummy's were full of the cotton filters :(

Cheers!

Thank you to everyone for your quick fedback. It looks like Parkway Fishing is closed (closed Oct 2011 according to a google search). Lake Chabot sounds promising, but can we realistically fish from the shore? My younger niece is afraid of being out on the water, so fishing from a boat is likely not going to work. Is there a particular area around the lake that's better than others?

A little hot right now for trout. Might want to try Lafayette reservoir for catfish and bluegill.

Yes you can fish from the shore. But just to let you know, if you are looking for some quiet time with your niece, I wouldn't go to Chabot, it gets crowded and loud.

Does Lake Chabot get crowded and loud even during the week? I have this week off, so I was planning on taking them fishing on Wednesday. I've never fished for catfish or bluegill, but I suppose we can give it a try.

Chabot, is a walk... racoon point is good.

San pablo, is good they just stocked it near the visitors center.

Lafayette, is ok crappy docks to fish off of unless you walk to the south end.

Del Valle can be good, a lot further from you than the others.

They are kids. It wont matter. With just the experience of fishing they will have a blast.

Some of the best fishing memories I have as a kid are catching blue gills and crappies with bologna and bobber at a municipal lake ten minutes from my door step.

Lake Merced used to be great when I was kid. Now it has a terrible rep.

Yep, I should have clarified my "too urban" comment - it's just not a healthy environment these days. I fished it a lot in the early 90's. But after the concession left, the place went down hill fast . . . So sad.

For me, the memories I still carry from my youth are not the fish or the amount we caught. But the experience of the outdoors with my family - urban, sub-urban or wilderness didn't matter - we just had fun!

One of my fondest remembrance is night fishing with my grand parents and parents. We were fishing some muddy old S.W. MO river . . . All we were catching were crawdads. I can still hear mom squealing as dad swung the critters at her head every time. We were laughing our a** off. That was over 45 years ago, sigh.

Cheers!

Campbell Percolation Ponds stock trout.

The water there is WAY too warm right now. The trout that have survived since the last plant (April I think) have all turned to mush due to the water being too warm. I would try either Shadow Cliffs in Livermore (very deep where the trout are) from a rental boat, Loch Lomond near Felton, or Bon Tempe near Marin.

Also check the fishing reports at Norcal Fishing News as they are fairly up to date: http://norcalfishingnews.com/page/Bay_Area_Fishing_Report?report=8
