How do they already know where the guns were purchased????

The guns used in the attack were purchased at two separate Gander Mountain Guns shops, one in Thornton, Colo., and another in Aurora. The remaining guns were purchased at two Bass Pro Shops in Denver, law enforcement sources told Fox News.

My first guess would be credit card records.

And you're going to be scolded for not posting this in OT...

Possible scenarios:

1) Run serial number if there is registration like CA
2) Reverse trace
3) Searched the apartment, found receipts etc.

ibt-lbme(lock, ban merge, etc.) we don't need a new thread(in every section) for every new detail of the event. keep it in OT. kthx.

Receipts at his apartment?

DROS is California specific, thank God.

The feds would have to search every 4473 by hand, anywhere they think he may have made the purchases.

I'll bet they found receipts, or he told them.

ATF back-traces run pretty quickly, and a newer gun that has not changed hands via private transfer should show up, plus or minus a bit of flatfoot work.

Take the make/serial# of gun, quiz mfgr, find distributor, find (possible) dealer(s).

A 1970 Colt 1911 would be much harder.

Plus, I suspect that Gander Mtn. and Bass Pro Shop may have direct mfg. relationships making the trace even faster.

So they run the serials and check the roll marks, find which manufacturer it came from and which FFL they sent it to, then go there and find who they sold it to?
