I've only seen the pictures from Mexican drug cartel busts. AKs, 1911s, HPs, etc. All gold.

A shop that does chrome would need an FFL to do the receiver and not many shops do. Gold is another matter, since you'd need a jeweler. 24 carat gold is the most costly and least durable, so a lower alloy like 10 carat would be necessary if you wanted it to last. At current gold prices (about $1500+ an ounce) and the higher cost of a jeweler's time per hour, with the secondary requirement that they have an FFL, I'm not sure you'd have any luck finding someone to do this. If you did, the price will probably be almost as ridiculous as the weapon will be when complete.

Most of those gold, nickel plated and bright chrome plated firearms were made in developing countries where regulations are quite a bit more "flexible" and generally made for government officials, local warlords or drug kingpins.

Cheap solution - gold and silver paint do exist and while they won't have the deep metallic luster you may crave, they will be just as gaudy if that was the goal. When you get tired of being laughed at, the cost to change to a more sensible color pallet will be a matter of deciding (after stripping that rubbish off) on parkerizing, painting or bluing, which is an under $400 proposition if professionally done.

You can electroplate plastic using a different process from common industrial metals. Aluminum is plated all the time - think chrome plated rims.

I hear they are smuggling them in from overseas though...if you know the right guy (http://www.everydaynodaysoff.com/2012/07/07/marine-convicted-of-smuggling-ak-47-from-saddams-palace/).

FFL only required if it is physically out of your presence (i.e. you ship it, or leave it overnight). If you stay on the premises while its being done than you’re cool. Works the same way as engraving - as long as you’re in the shop while the legal firearm is being worked on the shop doesn’t need an FFL.

Now, I don’t know how long the plating process would take, or if they would allow you to wait, so my point may be moot.

I've seen a NIB chrome AK in a CA gun store before. So, I bet a few people here have them stashed away. The easiest and probably cheapest way to legally aquire one would be to find one on GB.

No, the metal has to be chemically broken down. Read up on electroplating. There is no heat involved.

Engraving is a process you could expect to be physically present for when it's performed and with the new laser etching setups, it could be done in minutes. The prep work and process of plating has enough steps and time involved that they would have to clear their schedule to allow you to be on premises for several hours and neither of you would be able to leave until the work was finished and handed over. From a workflow perspective, it's just not that practical.

There are a couple of goldish finishes I looked at including a few home plating set ups when I built my last AK. In the end, it was going to cost more than the gun. While I would like a gold AK in my collection, I decided it wasn't high enough on my want list to justify the cost.

That was the point I was trying to make. A lot of effort and cost for a questionable outcome that will get old fast.

An idea, you could look into TiN coating (Titanium Nitride) It's gold in color, and actually has properties that would be useful in firearm applicaitons, surface lubricity, wear resistance, scratch resistance, etc. There are tons of firearm finishing shops that can do it, just google it.

I thought about having a Glock slide TiN coated, mainly because I really like the properties of the finish, but the gold color would be interesting. If you're not interested in a gold color, TiCN, and TiAlN coatings aren't gold, but offer many of the benefits of TiN coating.

Here's a 1911 with the slide TiN coated:

nickel, chrome , black chrome , gold , silver ect ect

Home kits like this require you plate in two steps as the gold won't stick to the steel. That doubles the cost and work/time it takes.

There are several companys with FFL's that plate firearms. One I found here in CA. I have never used them so I can't comment on there work but here's a link Techplate (http://http://www.techplate.com/firearms_pl.htm) There minimum price is $425 for a rifle. Remember plating, like bluing, does not hide any flaws and I would imagin any polishing would be extra.

Like I said, I did look into it. Some day when I have more money or fewer wants I may get one.

I didn't realize you lived that far North when you were over here. How have the deprogramming sessions being going? I hear it takes twice as long to get the Bay Area "thing" out of your vernacular. ;)

I actually lived in Healdsburg/Windsor. To be honest, most the people raised in that area don't identify with the "bay area" sentiment. It's the people that moved there from the bay, and basically bought out the downtown area, the wineries, and inflated the housing prices so much, that made the area such a hotbed of liberal ideas.

I lived in WV for a short while also, so adapting to the southern thing wasn't to hard for me.
Honestly, the hardest thing for me living in TX is not saying "hella", people just give you funny looks if you say that here.

I remember years ago that classicarms used to sell chrome AK's and SKS's. Naturally they did not sell them to residents in Ca but I am sure a few members possibly got a third party involved. Here is one a member from another site purchased from them.

I couldn't imagine THAT many people wanted them. He didn't charge a real high premium on them either.

New website is so much nicer. The old one made me cringe.

+1 on wanting to do a Draco or underfolder in chrome or gold. I actually really wanted to buy one from Classic Arms when they had them, but when I called they said they wouldn't ship it to CA. So does Classic Arms ship to us now? They always got decent prices.
