View Full Version : Took a little trip to the high country

With things heating up in the valley; Jeremy and I decided to hit the high country for a little dry fly fun. The day started kind of early as it was a bit of a drive to get to where we were going. I for one was excited to get out into the cool fresh air and toss some big *** bushy dries for a change of pace.

We got to our destination; it was nice and cool with a slight breeze. Man this sure beats the 102 degree temps forecasted back home. We made our way down to the water, once there we decided to head downstream.

The first hole wasn’t too far away; once there I stripped off some line and began to fish. A very short time later I saw a silhouette rise and take my fly.

My next cast found its mark as well.

We each caught a few out of the first run and headed downstream. Like the first run the results there were good as well.

We fished and hiked downstream for several hours and enjoyed every moment of it.

After a while we decided to hike back to the truck and get some lunch.

Once we were back at the car it was time to eat and relax for a few. After lunch we decided to head upstream and see if it was a good as downstream. Well as it turns out the fishing was exactly the same, full of fish that were all too eager to take a fly.

Around 5:00 we decided to head back. We fished on the way back down catching quite a few more. After five days of being solo with the kids, then doing a block party on the 3rd and the fun on the 4th; I really needed this trip to decompress a bit. In addition to getting out of the city I was glad that it was a very fun day. There is just something about fish smacking big dries up in the high country that just does it for me.

I don't know my fish (just getting into outdoors), so what kind is that exactly? A trout?

It looks lovely up there.

i envy you so much right now....

which area were you fishing? (you can be general if you don't want to give up your spot) I guess there are several fly species hatching right now so fishing is off the chain, the hook, the wall, and the hizzie!!!

Two types of trout pictured. Most all of the ones pictured are Westslope Cutthroat Trout. There are also a couple different of Rainbow/Cutthroat hybrids in the pics.

Caught almost all the fish today (we lost count but we each easily got 40+) on #6 and #4 Salmon flies tied with a foam body. In the early morning until around 11:00 a #10 Adams (closest thing I had to the grey drakes that were hatching) was the trick. In the late afternoon (after 4:00) a #14 PMD was the ticket.

As far as the location, well... It was more than three hours and less than 6 hours away from Boise ;)

Nothing too special; it is the same D3000 camera body my wife got me a while ago. I shot most of those pics with a Nikkor 60mm AF Micro 1:2.8 D lens.

I am looking into another camera body. Something like a D700 or D7000. Hell I may just grab a D90 and use that for my fishing camera. There are a couple of other lenses I intend on getting here in the near future as well.
