So I'm new to mosins and most bolt actions for that matter. Can you guys let me know on what to look or check for to ensure I get the best specimen? I'm planning on buying it from big 5 (never bought a firearm through them) and I know they usually have multiple mosins in stock. I'm just trying to take the best one off their hands! ;) Thanks gentleman

Are you buying one to shoot or to collect or both?

I want a cheap range gun that makes my shoulder hurt! ;) its just going to be a shooter, all my guns are ugly lol. I just want a fun range gun that will let me reach out and touch somthing :)

Look for matching numbers on the reciever & bolt, Nice bore & rifling, good crown (counter bored is ok)

I'm no where near an expert, but I just did purchase my first one after hours and weeks of reading about them. This was the best guide that I found:

It's long and the author is quirky, but it's a very good read. I highly recommend it. If you want to take the time to pick a good rifle, take the time to read this guide. It's well worth it.

I second the TTAG article, it is excellent.

I would also do some reading at 762x54.net
