My question as title says what is a good distance between the front and rear sight.

The farther apart they are the greater accuracy you will have at longer distances. So I would say the farther apart the better.

That's what I thought but really never seen anyone with sights all the way to the front of the barrel.

Thats because the gas block is usually the last place on an ar15.

Skip to 2:49 and check out the sight set-up on this 20" upper.

the farther the better. If you're running flip up irons for your front and rear put it on the last possible rail for the front and back
