So I just started a PPT on an unfired Styer M1A in 40 S&W today. I had no plans on buying a firearm today but it was a deal i couldnt pass up. Just curious if anyone out there has an opinion on this pistol one way or the other. Let me know what you think or what your experiences have been with the pistol. Here are some stock pic's.

Watch YouTube on dissasimble & removal of the subframe for cleaning. Great gun. Cdnn sport sales new mags. I have two older models s40 & m40 no problems.

I had a 9mm version. Good gun but support from Steyr is pretty much non existent. The sights take some getting used to as does the trigger. Sold mine and went to another polymer model. Good range gun.

This Steyr M 40 was my most favorite gun, that is until I got a S40-A1. The ergonomics and trigger are better than a Glock. What I like most is the ability to take out the metal subframe and put the rest of the frame in the dishwasher.

Jeff from SAI really is a good helper and he has good service.

Excellent gun- the grip angle makes the .40 feel more like a hot 9mm.

Don't own one yet but they sure are sexy.

A great gun! I take it every time I go shooting. Recoil is comparable to a 9mm, believe it or not.

Haven't owned one yet I think this is the first time I've seen someone mention a Steyr as a option they bought. I think its a gun that doesn't much publicity but they look good

I bought one about 4 years ago and used it one season for IPSC matches. It's now my nightstand gun because it's reliable, comfortable and accurate.

Solid pistol in both performance and build quality.

It's trigger feels like Glock with 3.5 connector.

i only have the 9mm and its one of my favorite pistols due to its ergonomics. luckily, i got it for $499 new, when it was still in the roster.

I shot one in .40 S&W back in 2007. It was great but the sights were a little weird and for me it was hard to get used to them.

I just sold my M9-A1 to fund a restoration project of my Springfield Armory Defender in .40S&W. It was the only reason I sold it. It is a very comfortable, nice shooting pistol. It's also one of the most natural pointing pistols made. Very enjoyable pistol.

You know, for those old enough to remember, the original low-end IBM personal computer, the PC jr., marketed the fact that it's keyboard was 'dishwasher safe'. Didn't help that product either.
But the Steyr is supposed to be a great piece. I'd love the opportunity to try and buy and early (with safety) 9mm version.

Love the way these look and I bet with that low low bore axis they shoot really well. Too bad they're not ambi at all.

What's not ambidextrous about it?

No manual safety, use the middle finger to trip the slide lock if you shoot it dry.

The s is a better size. S40a1 are truly rare

Congrats! That is defiantly on the list, but need funds first!

I guess if you're 100% okay with the mag release on the left side, nothing. But it can't be switched AFAIK.

On another note, how do you guys feel these stack up compared to the latest generation of "popular" plastic guns (XD's, M&P's, etc)?

I have one and love the Steyr line of pistols. Currently considering getting a .357 barrel for my M40A1. Not sure how recent your pistol is, but if it ejects brass at your forehead, contact SAI for the new extractor.

I am still kicking myself for not picking one up at Turners about 5 years ago. Nice purchase.

I wish I had bought the M9 A1 when they were going for $339 to $399 a few years ago. I missed out on the deal and then they disappeared for a couple years. Now they're back but hardly anyone carries them. I'd probably get the S9 A1 if I could find one. Supposedly they're very accurate and people either love or hate the sights. I suspect I'd like the sights. The trigger is supposed to be much better than all the other stock plastic guns out there.

Back where? They are not on the roster.

They disappeared from the US market for a couple years. Now they're back.

If you have a parent in another state, you can be gifted one. But very few dealers carry them and good luck finding one in inventory if you can find a dealer.

They were on roster until a year or two ago. Just few months after they came back. I recall someone pick up a S-A1 after they were back.

I have the M40A1 and love it, the downside was it took a lot of digging to find a holster for it when I bought mine. It's been 100% reliable with everything I've fed it for the 5+ years I've had it.

Yeah, I got one too when they were "back." They are not in the roster today. Great gun for a PPT though!

I recently picked up the M9-A1 via SSE to go with my M40-A1. PM me if you want the contact info for the dealer. He is able to get both the M-A1 and S-A1 in all calibers (except the 357). I pointed him to CGN and from here he was able to learn all about shipping to CA. Another win for us folks in CA :D
