I've been contemplating a big bore AR build for a while and wanted opinions. 450 Bushmaster, or 458 SOCOM.

If you have either and have some real experience with them let me know. Key parameters for choosing would be accuracy, effectiveness, ect. Ammo cost isn't a real big issue as I can reload.

I plan on using this for target shooting and light to medium game hunting.

What are your expectations for range? For both hunting and target shooting <250 yards I presume? In general, accuracy is going to come from load development and the quality of the barrel. As for effectiveness there are many excellent .45 and .458 bullets available that should fit either target or hunting needs. If you are planning to reload, the .450 may be moderately less costly in the ammo, but I doubt it would be a deciding factor. Both rounds fit Jeff Cooper's concept of the "Thumper" in a short, lightweight semiautomatic rifle. I don't think you can really go too far astray with either within reasonable/ethical hunting ranges.

Inside of 200 yards. Over that and I'll be using my 7mag.

458 Socom. Much bigger selection of bullets from small to big. And the off chance you move to a free state, the 458 Socom is an excellent suppressed round from a short barrel.

I've been leaning toward the 458 but the 450 Bushy does have some merits.

Wonder if anybody ever thought to neck 458 SOCOM down to .338? big range of bullets from super heavy to mid weight.

Sounds like a new wildcat. The .338 Apex. That would be a pretty cool name. ;)

Umm someone already has done something similar. The 300 OSSM. A .30 cal round with ballistics a hair better than .30-06 on an AR-15 platform.

Here is some info:

I know it is a niche round, but it should pack a heck of a punch.

I'd definitely go with the 9 inch barrel.

.458 SOCOM. And much love for the .50 Beowulf also. When it absolutely has to stop with one shot.

Look for the 338 Spectre or Whisper if you your looking for a AR type gun.

If you reload...
.450Bushmaster uses .45LC bullets.
.458SOCOM uses .45/70 bullets.
.50Beowulf uses .500S&WMagnum bullets.

Had a 450 bushmaster for year,upper is 20in and lower a dti.
Never a cycle issue, ammo is easy to get.
I shot a local private club that had gongs at 276yards and hit consistently, using a tug red dot,I had others shoot it and told them aim a foot high and everyone it their gong.
I am never allowed to return with out the 450 .

I recommend it highly, it WILL out preform the socom
