a customer of mine said he has a old 1940s 22 rifle that shoots 22 WRF. on the net it looks like i can still find bullets for it. i think he is going to give it to me . he is 89 years old and nobody in his family wants it. i do not know who made the rifle. maybe at 89 he will forget :(:D

Could be a Winchester model 90, Is it a pump action? If you you're lucky!

CCI makes ammo for them, and from what I understand they make a large batch and then don't make again for a while.

.22 WRF was made in many rifles and some handguns; it's the ancestor of the .22 WRM. Many of us geezers call it the ".22 Special" because when Remington started chambering guns for it, they called it the ".22 Remington Special" to avoid using the "W" word.

The guns I can remember that were chambered for it are: Win Models 1890, 1885, 61, 67, and 68; Rem Models 12 and 33, Colt Police Positive and Police Positive Target and SAA (VERY rare), and Stevens Model 44, "Buckhorn," and "Favorite" (also rare in this chambering). I'm sure I am forgetting some. (But H&R revolvers marked "22 Special" are regular .22, not WRF).

Another old term for it, used mainly by Stevens, was ".22-45-8" for .22 caliber, a 45 grain bullet, and 8 grains of fine black powder in the case (optimistic!).

My dad helped get his family thru the (other) Depression with a Remington Model 12CS ("S" for Special) pump.

more info, i did a search for the year it was built in AUG 1946. he took it out 1 time and shot less than 20 rounds. took it home cleaned it and never shot it again. the bluing is perfect .no rust. i cleaned it and the patch came out real nice first time. a few minor chips in the wood stock. now off to ammo bros to find 22 special [ wrf].
