I'm looking for an inexpensive rifle case, but of decent quality. Doesn't have to be airline approved or anything though. Just something so it can be protected, and locked when going shooting.

The gun is a Rem700 with 26" barrel. I plan to have a different stock, and a muzzle brake soon. It also has a 50mm scope. It's a pretty large rifle.

Right now it barely fits in a 50" case that I have, but with the new stock, and especially the muzzle brake, there is no way.

I'm thinking it will have to be at least 53", or maybe even 54". I'd like for a little extra room all around, so maybe 54" at the smallest.

Anyone know of something that is of decent quality for under $100, that is this long/large? Only thing I've been able to find is Plano, and they don't seem like the they are great quality.

Thanks for the help!

SKB all the way!! I have the 2SKB-4900 (http://www.skbcases.com/sports/product/shooting/rifleshotgun.html#2SKB4900) and love it. I picked it up for $80 about 10 years ago at a gun show and it is still going strong. I use it for storage and transport of my 1950's Mossberg 190K 16 gauge bolt action shotgun with a 26" barrel. It fits in the case with room to spare.

I have even put my Remington 788 in it to see how it would fit, and with the huge scope my dad put on it there was room to spare.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the link you gave shows that it's interior dimensions are 48" long. It wouldn't fit as it is now in that. I don't see anything from SKB that is long enough for a 53"+ rifle.

Might have to pony up for a pelican case. I really don't want to, and I really don't think it's needed just to get it to the range and back.

There's got to be others out there. Plano could do for me I guess. I'll just have to find one that is large enough. They all seem to have pillar things in the middle of them, and wouldn't allow for the large size of rifle that I have.

You can always use a stinger missile case. It is more than your budget, but so is a Plano.

Umm the 2SKB-6019 (http://www.skbcases.com/sports/product/shooting/rifleshotgun.html#2SKB6019) is 56" long. that should fit your rifle with room to spare. But it sure is not cheap.

409 dollars for that? Wow lol. A pelican case would be a much better alternative compared to that price.

Check out MidwayUSA they have what I think they call a sniper bag its under $100 and they have 2 sizes I think a 50" and a 56". If you want to spend more money you could look into a bag that does double duty as a case and a shooting mat.

You don't need a hard case unless your flying a quality soft case will protect everything extremely well you can even get yourself a scope and crown cover if you wanted to be extremely safe about it.

If you just need something to get you to the range and back there's nothing wrong with the cheap Plano Pro-Max PillarLock. After using one for this very purpose I'd kick my own *** if I spent $200 or more on a case.

I think this may just be the way to go. Save the money and put it into more ammo.

Although, I really LOVE the stinger missle case. If I were ever to put together something, I might just have to go in that direction. But yeah, too much money still for my current budget on this.

I have two Plano Airglides. They're great for scoped rifles in that it really ties the rifle down.

I have six plano cases and hate them, they are starting to fall apart and flimsy.

I use Pelican cases for handguns. But I prefer the SKB cases for long rifles. Strong without all of the weight. A better design overall (if not quite as 'mil-spec' looking).

Voodoo Tactical. It can carry two rifles effortlessly (I've gotten four rifles in). Also has many compartments and pouches to carry gear. I got mine from sportsmansguide for about $70 last year.

About 5" too short.

I have an SKB guitar case that I like. Way too short for my bolt gun. Might modify it for my AR once that's built. Don't use it for the guitar anymore.

I went to sportsmansguide, but I couldn't find the model that you are talking about. Do you possibly have a model number or a link?

Blindracer-That vanguard case is on amazon as well in a 50in model.

Heres two more in the 100 dollar range... is your preference a hard case? Or would a drag bag work?

Heres a double rifle one... 52in inside length

It's not listed as a Voodoo Tactical on there. I think it's labeled as a Mil-Spec. I will try to find it on there and link it to you when I get home tonight. It's a soft case, not hard case, by the way.

Hey! Just came across this one from MidwayUSA. The sniper drag bag.

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/939171584/midwayusa-sniper-drag-bag-scoped-rifle-gun-case

Anyone have experience with this one?

It's 56" long, so it will definitely work, and it's on sale from the normal $150 down to $75 right now!

I might have to do something like this. I was originally looking for a hard case, but this may work if it's good quality.

I'd love some input on it before I buy.

I can't find it said anywhere, but does anyone know if this Midway sniper drag bag is lockable? luggage lock on the zippers at least?

BlindRacer

It looks like the Midway drag bag - 56" version only has an internal length of 52"

I'm not sure if that is going to be long enough. Does anyone have experience with this bag?

I'll need to go measure my rifle, and add a few inches for the muzzle brake and new stock that I'll be getting.

I'm liking this bag, and I hope it is long enough. Reviews sound great, and it also will fit two rifles side by side, so that's a big plus.

There is not a heck of a lot of point to a lockable soft case other than maybe keeping your kids out of it. A knife defeats the point of the lock. Maybe there is some other purpose that is not occuring to me.

That should be fine. No need to lock it. Just do the normal things that cops like. I.e. remove the bolt, and put a cable lock through the receiver, or a trigger lock on it.

Good to know.

As for school zones, I thought long guns had to be locked in a case as well. I'm sure I can rig something with the zippers on this guy.

I read that the zipper area where the pull cord goes through is pretty large. Do you think it is large enough for a small luggage lock? I'd rather play it safe and lock it anyways. Just in the habit of that for all my guns, and I'd rather not be hassled about it.

I have the shorter version of it for a while (1-2y) and it holds up just fine.
- I had to cut open the cleaning rod storage pocket. It was sewed shut.

I even made shorter hikes with it loaded to 55lbs on my back.
- Not the best fit for a backback, but it didn't break or show any signs there off.
Edit: That was my Voodoo 60" dragbag (http://www.voodootactical.net/p-1013-voodoo-tactical-50-caliber-rifle-drag-bag-60-long.aspx). Its too big to haul around and I may end up getting the large Midway instead.

I think you could cut the pull cords off and put a lock through where they were. Maybe even drill out the zipper tabs if needed. The pull cords are pretty weak, so I don't think I would put a lock through there.
