Do you recommend testing a weapon before purchasing it through a CGN private party transfer?

I would say yes, but it may not always be possible.

Welcome to Calguns. I have purchased firearms from other Calgunners and have function checked them, and looked for any condition issues, but I have not fired them prior to purchase.

I'd recommend testing a weapon before purchasing anytime you can.
It's not always possible so you go with your experience and gut.
I just bought a G19 that I had shot many times before from a friend.
Good price, good gun I'm happy. :D

Thanks for all the replies.

Would you suggest asking the other party to fire the weapon? I'm still a beginner with firearms and wouldn't trust myself to do a functionality test without firing.

i have also had good experience asking a knowledgable member of the transfer store's staff to give it a once over.

If you are that uncertain and new to firearms, I recommend just buying new. Or take along a friend who is very knowledgeable. Good luck and welcome to Calguns! :)

Function test does not include live fire. I think your options are:

Learn more (some guns are simple enough, manual and info available on the web, way better than the "pre-inkernet days" for self learning)
Bring a trusted friend to check it out
Buy only from someone with a high flawless itrader rating who you let know you will need lots of help and who will be willing to do the extra teaching with you
Buy new

If you are looking at revolvers check out Jim March's guide to buying a used revolver, posted at thehighroad I think.

just ask the seller if he/she is willing to let you fire the rifle or handgun.
