View Full Version : Convince me not to get a JP rifle!

I've been researching many a rifles, trying to find "the best" all around ar for under $3000.

I cannot find one negative thing about the rifles or even the company itself, other than the price.

Please help my bank account and suggest a cheaper alternative! I would appreciate any current or former JP owners who can chime in.

And here's some (gun) porn. You're welcome!

I have no first hand experience with JP, but hear nothing but good about them. I'm sure Stan will chime in and give you some info on those rifles as well as that picture.

You can't argue with excellence. What r u planning to do with it? Plink, hunt, 3gun, carbine class?

My only question here would be, How does a JP rifle compare to a SS barreled Noveske.

Mostly target shooting, would like to get into some 3-gun eventually. No hunting for me.

I think the pic is awesome!
You've got a pretty lady holding a pretty rifle, why are looking at a couple Legos in the corner?

I can't help you then.. un-convince you that is! For those purposes, I'd get a JP too!

I run Noveske SS and have been very happy with them. Actually, I think there are so many great AR makers now that it's hard to pick a bad one. I went with Noveske solely for the barrel and then chose my other parts (handguard, upper receiver, stock, etc).

do they sell just complete uppers ?

BigBamBoo
06-22-2012, 4:42 PM
Well...I currently am down to three JP upper based builds. I do not own any of them that are pictured above anymore. Well...except for Amber....I still "own" her!

If you want innovation. Very high quality. 2nd to none customer service. And outstanding accuracy....I highly recommended JP.

If you want a dressed up AR platform...buy anything else.

The current three I own are JP uppers with billet lowers. I like something a bit different from the "norm". So I use lowers that offer a bit more then a standard forged lower.
Two of my builds use Seekins ambi-lowers and the third has a C3 Defense lower. Two of them have AR Gold triggers while the other has a Timney.
Nothing wrong with JP lowers and their triggers are very nice. I just like being different.

One thing worth noting...JP was one of the first MFG.ers to ship complete AR's into CA. in the early days of the OLL movement. John Paul was never anti-Calif.

For myself I will probably never own another brand of AR unless something far more innovating comes out. Once I move from Calif. (soon I hope if plans go as the should) I will have them (JP) build me a 9mm SBR.

You will not be disappointed if you buy one.

Take care,Stan

PS...those are not Lego's...they are "mice" for the cat. And the picture was not taken for internet approval, but for my personal "use". Those that have been to our home know we have LOTS of pictures of Amber (and myself together) around the house. If personal items in the background offend....don't look.

Yes, you'll have to search for them though. Shooters Connection has some:

Thanks BigBamBoo.
I'm thinking of the 18" ctr-02. How do the black oxide barrels hold up? Any experience with the silent spring?

BigBamBoo
06-22-2012, 5:19 PM
Yes sir.
I have a 18" CTR-02 with SS barrel and a 18" JP-15 with black Teflon...as far as I know they do not offer a black oxide. The Teflon finish holds up very well. Both of these I use the low mass op system in them.

I also have a 14 1/2" PSC-11 upper build with the full mass BCG coupled with the capture spring. I like it a lot. Works very well and does away with cheese grater feel.

The only down side to JP rifles/uppers is you will want more of them!

Take care,Stan

JP is a great company!
The fact that you're considering a JP rifle means you better start saving the extra money right now. They'll probably ship it faster than the estimate and you'll likely get a cool hat so it all worth it.

Oh, well if they give you a free hat, I'm sold.

It's decided. If anyone wants to contribute to the help me get a JP fund, let me know. :D

JP rifles are definitely one of the best out there. I've had JP rifles in the past and run LOKI rifles now mainly because they're a bit more affordable and have some of the features I prefer for less weight. Still run some JP parts though :) If it weren't for the fact that I can buy 2 LOKI 3G rifles for the price of 1 JP I'd still be running JP. Accuracy and reliability of the LOKI has been same as JP.

JP is what all other rifle companies that manufacture rifles for extreme shooters strive to be like. Buy JP with confidence, you can't go wrong if you can afford it.

JP make some of the best non-milspec parts and guns around.
My JP parts are top notch and ooze quality. Their top tier customer service just makes me buy more gear.

*When I say non-milspec I don't mean it as a negative.

So if JP is at the top of the top as far as quality and cost...where would you rate the next in line or a top 5 even? Watched the Nutnfancy interview with JP at the shotshow and just drooled at all the amazing rifles they have.

whoawhoawhoa

other than price? i know of no reason

the only thing is that you can build a rifle with similar parts (or even mostly the same parts) to the jp rifle for maybe 3/4ths the price (can easily do it for less if you skimp on some things like the adjustable gas block, or maybe a little more if you get things like the jp thermal dissipator)

the jp trigger is really nice, and i really like the concept of the thermal dissipator

on a side note that jp tube is kind of heavy

Well I asked because I had been researching my first AR build for a while but after pricing premium parts I was in a full custom build territory like a daniel defense v7 would be cheaper and i wouldnt possibly screw it up...

I did notice JP sells their forged lower with their trigger already installed for 300. That sounds like a great deal!

Nice rifles I am sure, IMO tho I would spend on a Noveske/LaRue.

Nothing against the MFG, as those rifles look liked quality hi grade stuff- and the owner is very knowledgeable.

Thanks

I have a JP CTR-02 in 223/556. It's a heavy sucker but a dream to shoot. You really have to shoot one to understand the sticker shock. Has very little recoil. A little bit stronger than a 22lr. I like it so much I ordered the LRP-07 in 308.

I took my buddy shooting and he brought along his Noveske. After shooting his I broke out one of my JP's.

His words...."wow....I thought JP was a bunch of hype (he never owned/shot one before) I want one now! I can not believe how this thing shoots and feels"

You really need to shoot one to understand what they are about. It's the complete system...low mass op system, brake, fit and finish, etc.

Isn't that the truth. Every buddy of mine that got behind my JP says the same thing. My buddies end up wanting to shoot the JP rifle more than the rigs they brought out. It's really hard to put in words shooting a JP rifle. All I can say its a dream to shoot and you really need to get behind the rifle to really know.

1/3 MOA precise is not unrealistic for the JP.

Thinking about building a rifle with the JP low mass BCG + bolt, adjustable gas block and low mass buffer on a 18" SPR barrel with brake. Tagging.

I've got a JP enterprises upper (long and very heavy) built on a RAW receiver. It was originally built as one of those competition uppers for AR high power shooting (front block for extended iron sight radius- and came with a level).

It will make some bolt guns look foolish. Sub MOA even with surplus and Miwall reloads.

The weight reduces kick so much you can watch the bullets hit at 100 yards, and if the sun's just right, you can see them in flight sometimes. One of the funnest semis I own.

I never noticed anything in that picture until you mentioned it, except for the woman, then the rifle, then the woman some more, then back to the rifle, (and repeat).

JP all the way!
Proud owner of PSC-11, SCR-11, LRP07H and JP-22NC.
The side charging handle is awesome, it allows you to keep your sights on the target with charging the handle.
Installed the new silent spring on all three rifles and worked great.
