So, in general, I don't like anyone knowing I have guns. Seems like asking for trouble or for someone to try to steal your guns when you're away. My building has a lot of fairly stupid security guards as well and I probably trust them the least out of all my neighbors, because they seem the stupidest.

At any rate, I've been wanting to build a case like this for a while; I finally had the impetus I suppose when I got a new rifle. It turned out to be a surprisingly large pain in the ***. I envisioned an easy process of foam knifing and precise measurement. Not so. Ohhh, my, is it not so. I now have a hot wire foam cutter arriving in the mail because this was actually a fairly awkward finished product compared to what I think I can do.

So I thought I'd presents a prototype or draft version of this case and see what you guys might think.

Ladies and gents, Trigger Hippie Industries presents the SCR mod 0 mk 1 code name: OMGRAINBOWDASH

http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/2135/caseinterior.jpg

It is possible to fit a surprisingly large amount of gear in this. I haven't even used the lid yet; I'm planning to put a 1911 and an M&P in the lid, plus magazines.

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/4120/casehandle.jpg

I can't quite get the stickers right; I think it comes across like some weird girl hippie right now. Which is OK, the one I dated was pretty poor and she didn't have anything I would have wanted to steal. (I do kind of wish she would have stolen my razor and shaved her arms, but that is another story for another time.)

http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/7338/caseexterior.jpg

Here's the full exterior. I used a dreadnought (I think that either means 12-string or big-*** battleship) case which is 24" at the widest point and 48" high. It looks suspiciously new right now. I think I need to scuff it up a bit.

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/2263/caseneckcloseup.jpg

And my own little personal touch.

I'll be around some Bay Area ranges this weekend - come say hi if you recognize the case :)

Hmm. More scuffing you think?

I was thinking some of those "COEXIST" stickers might work. Nothing says "too poor to own a weapon" than cheap pacifist bumper stickers on scuffed old guitar cases.

Excellent critique Calguns!

- Scuff the crap out of the outside
- Remove the I <3 Bacon sticker (too bad... I do <3 bacon...)

The sights - the Eotech guarantees return to 0.5 moa zero I think? And the ARMS #22s guarantee return to zero, though I don't know how much I trust that over say Larue's guarantee.

I could perhaps make the cutout for the scope... and simply swap on the Eotech if it's needed.

When I make the Mark 2 I'll see if this could be a marketable process. So far the sunk-in cost is about $75 in gear (hot knife cutter mostly, plus odd knifes and tape), ~$120 in raw materials (new $70 case, one ply of $40 "cuttable" Kaizen foam, about $10 worth of neoprene).

What kind of price point would people like these at I wonder? Say I charged $250 each... sound right?

Honestly... I think it's the latest ironic fad of the moment.

In about a year I will feel very silly for these stickers and doubtlessly change them out.

Perhaps Belle and Sebastian stickers. Hard to find those though.

Also what kind of bedding are you using? Did you find a good plastic solution besides foam, I wonder?

Believe it or not, the bumper sticker selection on Telegraph Avenue is surprisingly bad....

As far as not letting people know you have rifles or guns. I think it's a state by state thing. California, yeah good idea. Arizona,Texas,Tennessee and others its up to you. Here where I live it seems like everyone owns at-least 1 firearm, talked to a co-worker the other day and told her casually what I do for a hobby and she was like, why does everyone I know love guns so much lol. Didn't really get into conversation about it. But anyway my point is if you live in a liberal area then yeah you've done a good thing by hiding them but when everyone and their neighbor is armed then meh, its up to you.

The problem with not carrying a rifle case is people stop being afraid of you. I like it when neighbors see my rifle case and then quickly break eye contact and stare at the ground so as not to offend me :43:

Yes, it is the case that came with my Larive guitar. I still use it for both purposes. I used expanding foam, first lined the case with plastic, then allowed the foam to expand. I wrapped my guns in garbage bags and pressed them into the foam. Then I did a little carving. There are two layers, the take down shotgun on the bottom, the pistols and rifle on top. And yes it is deep but there is no room in the lid.

Great job...on the case. The stickers? Hmmm.

If it had a guitar in the case you'd think the stickers on the outside would reflect a theme of musical preferences such as rock bands. Grateful Dead or other classic rock bands as a no-brainer.

Somehow it is quite confusing with the little girly stuff.

I like it. But the funny thing is, whenever I've flown with a guitar in a hard case, every time I've been asked if there's a firearm inside. I do use my bass guitar case & gig bag as a rifle case on rare occasion even my AR 10 fits nicely.

Please excuse the horrible pic:

The placement of the stuff looks nice but on the downside you have to break the firearm down every time you use it. That could get time consuming.

I'd also be cautious about adding too much stuff...that thing will get heavy.

btw, couldn't find any Molly Hatchet stickers? :43:

Completely badass. It reminds me of Desperado.

Which... makes me think it might be cool to set things deeper in the case and find a crappy cheapo guitar, cutting it down to just the face and set it with hinges.

Now... my question is, is this a legal problem? For some reason, I recall a question about this setup a few years back... something about disguising the firearm?

Ohhh, nice, yours is 2-layer! So a two stage process with the foam, right?

What kind of foam did you use, I wonder? I was pondering using some insulating foam or the like - something that expanded fast with good plasticity. Did you find something good?

Yes, it is the case that came with my Larive guitar. I still use it for both purposes. I used expanding foam, first lined the case with plastic, then allowed the foam to expand. I wrapped my guns in garbage bags and pressed them into the foam. Then I did a little carving. There are two layers, the take down shotgun on the bottom, the pistols and rifle on top. Actually that is a super-interesting question.

It turns out disguising a firearm in this manner is actually illegal in some states (Colorado it turns out?).

From the rather cursory research that I've done, because this weapon cannot be operated while inside the case - indeed, it's partially taken down as if to make it more difficult - this falls outside the category of "disguised weapons" and therefore legal in our fine state, if slightly unorthodox.

This really prods me to go take a look and see if I can find some relevant California code before I go gallivanting around with this.

I'd move the muzzle further forward into the "neck", and relocate the magazines to behind the buttstock. Considering where the carry handle is, that would better balance it.

Neat idea, but considering that instruments are such high target items for theft, I'd rather have a small gunsafe in the closet.
