I watched a show re: history of Costco.
The owner seemed reasonable and I'm wondering if there was enough outcry and they could buy bulk cheaply enough (that's the kicker) they would.
The owner said something along the lines of, "There are stadiums of people who will not sell to costco" due to whatever.
He then said eventually most do sell to costco at some point.
So the answer to your question might lie with the ammunition manufacturers - since they control the price of their item. If they could produce a quality product at a low enough price.
Costco pushes down prices from suppliers then sells for 10-15% profit I believe. But the ammo manufacturers would probably need to sell to costco for less than they're selling to Walmart.
Ammo manufacturers are doing ok these days, aren't they? They probably don't want to bother.

So Costco isn’t selling ammo???
You mean you meant to title this thread “SHOULD costco sell ammo?” or “WHY doesn’t costco sell ammo?” or “what will it take to get costco to sell ammo?”
hehe.
+1^googl for “Kirkland ammo"

they should! years ago they did sell paintballs for a short time.
I'd rather see Sam's sell ammo over Costco. Sam's is almost always cheaper.

Unless there is some drastic change in management, there's no way they would start to stock anything gun-related. Keep in mind the strict no-weapons policy in their stores that started the chain reaction that eventually led to a lawful CCW permit holder getting shot to death.

Gun safes are probably about as close as they are going to get to selling anything involving firearms.

Problem is like everything else at Costco, you'd have to buy it in enormous quantities.

Do you guys think the margins on ammunition are really so big that Costco would bother? The business model of Costco is to sell memberships, and the products are suppose to just break even - I doubt there is enough margin in ammo for them to even break even on the retail level.

:threadjacked: but here is a follow up to that case:

Given this info, I highly doubt costco in liberal CA would carry ammo.
Now in VA, it just might happen.

YES!!! 525,525 rounds of .22LR, Costco value packs are the best! :D
I remember buying shotgun shells at the Costco somewhere around Sacramento years ago.
If I remember though, they recently started selling gun-safes. Ammo is a prickly issue, but not impossible.

That 525-pack is typically around $17, or $0.0322 per round.
Let's say COSTCO can bring that down to $0.0299/round (about 7 1/2 % cheaper).
275,625 rounds would have a warehouse price of $8,241. Even at a penny a round, it would be $2,756. But 5,250 at 0.0299 is a pretty-affordable $157.

i hope not the store is spread thin enough with help it would probably be inside a locked cage and you would have to get someone to pick out what you want since parents treat the store like a playground for their kids
but it would be cool if they could have someone handing out cups of rimfire samples

I'm surprised they dont! Sam's is WalMart so it would make sense for them to sell bulk ammo packs, even if it worked out to the same price as the normal boxes on the walmart shelves, at least you know you could buy a bunch of ammo at once....
+1 for the OP ban......my heart skipped at least 2 beats

There's no "up side" for Costco to sell ammo.. it would be a drop in the bucket in terms of thier overall sales and they would alienate a segment of thier shoppers (hey, even anti-gun libs need 5 gallon jars of mayo!)
Also, if some ammo was used in some random crime the neg publicity would outweigh the profit potential.
That said I sure wish they would sell ammo :)

ye costco doesn't mark up anything more than 15%, which is why it's all in bulk. They would have to probably have to sell it in 100-1000 round boxes to be able to make enough money doing it.

You could load em yourself for less than that. I can reload 10,000 45 lc rounds with my own cast bullets for $900. I know, it's not as easy as hitting up costco though. :43:

Yes.
The policy also applies to open carry.
Costco Firearms Policy (https://costco.egain.net/system/selfservice.controller?CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=1101&REQUEST_FRM_ESCALATION=true&CONFIGURATION=1001&PARTITION_ID=1&isSuggestedArticle=true)
Costco does not believe that it is necessary for firearms to be brought into its warehouse stores, except in the case of authorized law enforcement officers. For the protection of all our members and employees, we feel this is a reasonable and prudent precaution to ensure a pleasant shopping experience and safe workplace. Our policy is meant to protect our members and employees in all warehouses around the world. This is not a new policy and we do not customize the policy for each individual city/county/state/country where we do business.
Our primary goal at Costco Wholesale is to keep our members happy. If you believe that our policy restricting members from bringing firearms into our warehouse stores is either unfair or excessively burdensome, or you cannot agree to abide by this policy, or you are dissatisfied for any other reason, Costco will promptly refund your annual membership fee in full.
