I recently sold a nice Remington 700 SPS with an XLR chassis, I probably had a couple of grand into that rifle.
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=353190
I am missing that rifle and was going to build another but wanted to step up in the precision rifle world.
I would like to spend around $2500.00 on a rifle alone without having to wait a year to get it.
I realy would like to buy a completed rifle.
My ideal rifle would be....

- A 20-24 inch match grade barrel in .308
- Already have a quality stock
- Detachable magazine
- Threaded barrel or a muzzle brake already installed

What is out there?

You looking into only bolt action?

You have to spend a crap ton of money to get beyond the accuracy of a Rem 700 and good stock... law of diminishing results.

If you were to go the gas gun route, for a little more you could pick up a GAP-10.

There are a lot of very nice used rigs out there that have plenty of life still in them for that price.

You can occasionally find sako trg rifles for that kind of money.

There are a couple tikka options too.

Might consider an HS Precision rifle. I just picked up an HS HTR (Heavy Tactical Rifle) in 378 Weatherby Magnum from SWFA for about 1/2 list price. I suspect the caliber had something to do with that, but it seems these rifles do occasiobally go for less than what one would expect.

How can you buy a USED rifle for 2500? When I gave you the build out of a custom rifle with the best parts for 1900? Thats just stupid not to take the time and built it the way you want one time.

For a nice bolt rifle go with a Sako TRG series, you can always build your own once again for $2500. If you are looking at a semi auto I bought my LWRC REPR for $2500 used, saved about $1200.

I'm a whore for GAP bolt guns. 3 out of my hoard were <= $2700 and I could break even or make profit if I sold them. There's a dozen smiths out there that do good work (APA, SAC, LA Precision, Beanland, etc) whose used rifles run in your price range.

I would not get a TRG as someone suggested above. I just sold mine cause I got bored of it & moved to 6.5 Lapua. Priced the TRG package at $3550 that included rifle, bipod, brake, 4 mags, Atlas adapter, Near mount. It sold in 3 hours because imho I priced it to move. TRG accessories will bite your wallet.

Fwiw, I only buy used & big name cause I've never lost $$$ on a resale. I buy and sell a lot of high-end bolt guns and optics cause I want hands-on experience with everything, so my perspective is one of 'no loss' when I move on.

What about just going with a Savage model 10 BAS-LE

Decent fun platform with a great trigger, but the Remington guys will chime in and say how savage is JUNK i'm sure :D

http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/images/ssi-2008/57403.jpg

Anyway, its worth a look. The Armalite AR-30 in .308 isn't a bad option for $1600, or go the custom route like Adam B suggested. I would probably want a rifle all done and not have to wait although its probably better to go the custom route. If you're just starting, the stuff on snipershide.com isn't a bad option either and its all built.

Here's an example of something built by the sniper central team from their site:

http://www.snipercentral.com/images/products/entrypackages/remington/rementrypack-mk2adj-green.jpg

With the exception of the scope, you can get a sweet setup for 2k all said and done.

SAKO TRG 308

GAP AR-10

LMT 308

All you would have to do is buy the accessories, and you would be GTG on most any type of shooting ( within the 308's capabilities ). Especially the first 2 picks.

Otherwise build something on a Savage Precision Target Action if a single shot will do. I have yet to build one that wouldn't do .25" at 100 yards with any of three brands of prefit barrels in several cartridges (even swapping out barrels). Gunsmith not needed, just assemble the parts and go.

If you do go with a Rem 700 solution and decide to put a detachable magazine on it both the Pacific Tool & Guage and the Badger Ordinance bottom metal prodcuts are outstanding. The challenge is that they both take the magazine for the Accuracy International Chassy System (AICS) which is not cheap, 10 round 308 runs about $130 each.

The good news is that I found a different manufacturer: C Products, which makes both the 10 round and the 5 round magazines that match the AICS magazines and cost only $49. I did a side by side comaparison of both magazines in a AICS and a Badger Ordinance mag well and found that the C Products mags worked flawlessly (over 100 rounds in each test).

One of my range buddies had his new Ruger Scout and we tried the C Products magazines in that as well (only 50 rounds) and it worked perfectly.

If enough people are interested in picking these magazines up I can talk to the owner of C Products and see if we can work a CalGuns member deal.

Thats one way to promote C products!! But AI mags are not that expensive! Around $75 normally. And AI mags are top notch.

$130? Where do you get your AI mags from? Brand new authentic AI 10-round mags MSRP at $89 and you can usually get them new for $79.

Fwiw I've heard the complete opposite & two people I know who bought C-Product mags regretted buying them cause they don't feed/fit right after a few uses. Preference is:

- Authentic AI
- Alpha Industries
- Accurate-Mag (run ~$55)

Gofasterdammit
06-20-2012, 11:15 AM
C-Product mags are junk, even the Gen 2 "improved" versions. I used them for a month (about 300 rounds) and had nothing but problems. They would double feed and jam up the action. This was with a tight chambered .308 running Lapua brass with 175 SMK's .020" off the lands. I bought more AI mags and have never had any mag issues in any of my match rifles, all .308's and .260's, no matter how far out I sat the bullets. Compare the followers on the two, there is a difference. The only other alternative I'd consider is Alpha, but I've heard of people having problems with those also.

FWIW, with a $2500 budget you could easily put together a Surgeon 591 barreled action built to your specs that will shoot lights out.

Oh, my bad. The AICS 10 round magazine for the 300 win mag retails for $130 (check Midway.com) the 10 round 308 is $85.

I have a dozen AICS mags in both 308 and 300win mag and found the C Product mags to be satisfactory in every way. I've had more jams during competitions with the AICS mags than with the C Products mags.

I was originally turned onto the C Products mags from the positive product reviews on the SniperCentral and SniperCountry forums and found the reviews to be accurate still after several hundred rounds.

I have to say that I have owned a LOT of custom 308s, but my Kimber Advanced tactical was out of the box fitted with a great stock and all the bells and whistles, affordable price, stunning accuracy: this is FIVE shots at 100 yards -- a typical group with Federal 165 Gold Medal Match at Angeles --

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p54/Fasanoland/Rifles/kimber-AT-100-yard-group.jpg

I sold it because I wanted a 700 with DBM -- (didn't know who'd do one then) regret it at least once a week -- and the guy who bought it from me says he would NOT sell it back to me!

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p54/Fasanoland/Rifles/_MG_5234.jpg

And BTW I love it when someone posts they want a bolt gun and the immediate reaction from some is get an AR. The AR is NOT the be all and end all of all rifles, dudes. It's a good gun, but especially neutered for California, I find them all "Meh."

get a trg-22 (more saving required :) before you start adding glass and etc.), if nothing else - it will HOLD resale value.

if it was my $2.5k - I would have bought $1000 howa in 6.5x55swede and spend $1000k on the glass and rest $500 for bipod, rings and ammo :). will reach out beyond 300m much better compared to .308

The S&B Glass is amazing. It was hard to justify spending almost 4 grand on a scope, and it still is. I have a NF 5.5-22 on my other tikka, and when used side by side, the clarity of the S&B is MUCh better than the NF. At Angeles, I can see the dimples on the plates @ 600 yards. No exaggeration. The clicks are much more positive on the S&B but the MTC option forces you to overturn when adjusting past the "major" click.
