So my wife and I decided that we are going to move to california and I would appreciate advice on how to modify my ak to be legal once I get there.

Here is a picture of my AK in its current form.

http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z456/mleifi/ak2.png

So if I have done my research correctly, I need to:

-scrap the collapsible stock
-scrap my 30 round magazines
-install a bullet button type contraption
-replace my pistol grip and stock with an approved grip/stock thing.

Is that it? Do I need to weld the muzzle break? Is there anything else? Does featureless = 10+ round mags are ok?

I apologize if this has been covered already. I did not find anything when I searched.

what make and model is it?

Have you looked it up on the rifle AW flowchart, http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf ?

It is a GP WASR-10/63

Are specific makes and models illegal even if it is modified to legal specifications?

Oh, and should I remove the bayonet lug?

Oh, and should I remove the bayonet lug?
only if you want to.

Ok, first you need to see if your make and model AK is not already on the banned list. Secondly, you can keep your pistol grip, collapsable stock and other "evil features" so long as the gun is equipped with a bullet button. If you go featureless then you don't need a bullet button and you can use 10+ mags BUT you cannot bring your 10+ mags with you so it's kind of irrelevant. You can however disassemble your mags and bring them in.

I have got the same exact rifle with almost the same exact upgrades. All you need to do is add a mag lock device. It can be found at Ebay for $13. As for the mags, disassemble into part kits. Where in CA are you moving too?

Ok so it is not on the band lists (Century International Arms GP WASR-10/63).

Yay!

And if all I need to do is install a bullet button and buy 10 round mags, it isn't going to be as expensive as I thought. Thankyou all for the info and the greetings.

I am originally from Hunington Beach, CA so that area would be ideal and I didn't mind San Diego area while I was in the USMC.

Collapsing stock is legal on a mag locked (off list) ak variant as long as shortest OAL is 30".

...Oh, and should I remove the bayonet lug?

...only if you want to.

Bayo lug is NOT an evil feature in CA.

1) Install this in your Tapco magazine to make it 10 rounds:
http://www.magazineblocks.com/magento/products/magblock-kits/ak47/ak-10-30-block-for-tapco.html
2) Install a magazine lock. Solar Tactical makes a good one.
-Your done

So I'm in the same situation as the op. I live in Nevada and own a bulgy sa93 but I have a lower tang welded on with a plastic salmon stock.all I need is a mag lock/bullet button to bring it to Cali? I also have 30+rnd mags, I need to takem apart then I can reassemble once in state? If I add one of the magpul plates to stop hand wrap on grip, can I use those hi cap mags? This site is great!

It is wise to be legal in California to avoid a felony. You will need to install a bullet button that happens to be annoying when changing your clip. The best way I found to release your magazine into your hand and not on the floor is by using a magazine release tool called a ThumBee. You can find it here: (http://ar-15.prnc.net)

What he said...make sure your lengths are sufficient for both the barrel and OAL.

To check OAL, make sure you collapse the stock as far is it can go before you measure it. If you can shoot it with the rifle being less than 30", you will need to change the stock.
