Hi everyone,

Got the bug to build an AR pistol a few months ago and decided I wanted to document the progress. Here's the list of parts I've put together, as well as an estimate of the prices (in case anyone wants to do the same). This is strictly going to be a pretty range toy, so be advised that some of the parts are more for looks than functionality. Comments and suggestions are more than welcome!

Lower:
Quentin Defense 80% billet - $95
Machining - $75
PSA MOE lower parts kit $66
Umbrella Corp pistol grip - $20
Spike's pistol buffer tube - $20
Spike's T2 buffer and spring - $15
Raddlock bullet button - $11
KNS gen2 anti-rotation pins - $22
B.A.D. Ambi Safety Selector - $50
MEGA Arms tactical trigger - $100
Phase 5 Tactical extended bolt release - $50
Phase 5 Tactical revolving sling attachment solution - $65 + S&H
Exile Machine rubber tube cover - $7 + S&H

Total for lower ~ $620

Upper:
Seekins Precision SP223 billet upper - $215
Daniel Defense hard chrome BCG - $185
Noveske 7.5" Diplomat barrel w/ LP gas block - $280
Noveske KX3 flash hider - $100
Rainier Arms Raptor ambi charging handle - $67
Spikes Tactical 9" SAR rail - $180
Magpul MBUS set - $78
Magpul AFG - $25
EOTech XPS2-0 - $400

Total for upper - $1,550

GRAND TOTAL ~ $2,170

** EDIT - AS OF 11/16/2012 she is officially completed! **

Cool. But, do your prices include shipping and/or taxes?

Yes, I've factored in shipping and tax where it is applicable. :D

our builds are very similar, I didn't want to keep track of how much it's going to cost. I'm sure it's less than yours seeing I went with a DD barrel and forged upper.

I'm starting with a QD 80% too, except I had to go with Noveske/Troy TRX upper combo. This is suppose to be a "sister" build for my AR.

Nice parts you got there, can't wait for the final pictures.

If you are concerned with using the full potential of the 5.56 I would reconsider your barrel length choice. 7.5" doesn't have enough length to reach the 2700 fps to fragment. An 11.5 is the minimum length to achieve fragmentation reliably. IMHO using hollow points or other types of ammo may be band-aid at best, but why would you want to carry expensive specialty ammo instead of commonly available 5.56?

You sure about that? The CQB-R most commonly used by Seals, Delta, and Special Tactics teams has a 10.3" barrel. Still longer then he is thinking about, but shorter than you suggest as the bare minimum. Seals, 1st SFOD-D and Combat Controllers are all pretty smart dudes who can carry whatever they wish. I would think if it had a major flaw they would know it. Just sayin'.

The GAU-5/A I was issued had an 11.5" barrel but that was a long time ago. The CQB-R now fills that roll for today's troops.

Main reason for the 7.5" barrel is for the fireballs :)

I've got different rifles for different purposes. this would be just to have a pistol.

Here is some good info on the 10.3 in PDF: http://www.dtic.mil/ndia/2003smallarms/john.ppt

This is a good read on ARF.com about different lengths and velocities: http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=509733

Your definitely on the right track then, the 7.5 looks awesome as a pistol. The 11.5 looks and functions better as a SBR anyway, but since the likely hood of owning one is impossible here in CA might as well have fun at the range with your build. With your barrel and gas block choice you should be GTG without cycling issues that plague most 7.5 ar pistol builds.

Thanks! I may order the BCM extractor upgrade kit just for insurance, have seen a lot of people recommending it on the 7.5" barreled uppers.

Looks like a fun build. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Instead of the foam cover, try one of our rubber covers. Cushy cheek weld but doesn't absorb sweat and protects the back end of the buffer tube:

Thanks, I will look into that! What ever happened to the 3.25" covers y'all used to carry? I really liked the way those looked.

heh heh, not to thread jack one of my good friends is former CCT and he could not care less about guns (well their specifics anyway) He always says "as long as it puts lead in the direction Im facing"

Though with that said he has stated he prefers the M4 to the Mk18/similar

Who did your anodizing on your lower?

It was purchased that way from a Quentin Defense 80% lower group buy. I believe the non-anodized receivers were $10 cheaper.

I got help from a member on here by name of roccobro (Justin). Very knowledgeable guy and highly recommend paying him a visit if you're looking to complete an 80% lower.

I like it so far but we'll see how it holds up when the pistol is completed.

One thing I really like is how it's a one piece design with it's own built in bolt release, unlike the Magpul BAD lever. The only flaw is that the lever seems to sit too low and can possibly get in the way of the trigger. If you're considering it on a stripped lower I say go for it, but wouldn't recommend it on a completed lower. Not worth the hassle of removing the pin unless you're bolt catch pin uses a set screw.
