Finally got to shoot today after more than a month off. Shot the 25 yd Iron Sight target with the CZ Ultralux and BRNO Target Sights using Wolf Match ammo. Score=135 (Whoops! forgot to add in the 31 target, Score - 166). The upper right bullseye really is 3 shots.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7253/7777355082_5d9d7733e7_c.jpg

Then shot the 50yd Iron Sight target with the Kimber 82G with aperture sights using Wolf Match Target ammo. Score = 117.

Thanks guys, I really like shooting the Browning. I have been shooting this gun since the early 90's and it has been a great gun. The 15 yard target was the hardest one to shoot because the red dot covered up the entire bullseye. That day I shot about 7 targets each to get a good final target to be able to post. This match makes you work. Thanks again.

ps. I am looking to get a good 22lr target rifle, any suggestions ?? I only have a 10/22 or old Marlin 60 tube fed.

I don't kno 300 to 500 dollars

Izzy43

In that price range I would take a look at the CZ 452 or 455 series of bolt action rifles. Another would be a Savage with a bull barrel, laminate stock bolt action. Another would be a used Kimber 82G. Its a single shot but very accurate single shot. The 82G weighs in around 10-11lbs so it rides the bags on a bench very well. When I shoot mine the sights rarely move off of the target after being shot. They go for around $650 used.

Of course the Anschutz and Coopers will shoot better but are somewhat beyond that budget.

http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/MARKIIBTVS

Maybe this one and then change out the stock for one from Boyds. I don't own the XT-22 but do own the predecessor 925 in .22WMR. Very accurate out to 100yds.

Stocks:

http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/Boyds-Tacticool-Marlin-Rimfire-Rifles-s/158.htm

I think these stocks will fit the XT-22 series as its the same action as the 900 series. If you decide on this you may want to ask Boyd's before buying the rifle and stock. I have three of their stocks, 2 Varmit Thumbholes and 1 Rimfire Hunter/Target and they are excellent stocks.

As far as accuracy I would rate them:

1. Kimber 82G
2. CZ
3. Savage/Marlin a tie.

I agree, though I tend to think a bit more of the Savage than you; I've shot (and seen shot) some pretty impressive groups with the heavy-barrel variants (I have the TR "tactical" version), but haven't seen much from the Marlins to compare.

I'd still give the CZ rifles an edge, though I don't know if they really work in that $300-$500 range once you figure tax, cleaning kit, etc.

My limited range time was devoted to shooting for the MOA contest, but I taped up a KYL target anyway (and yes, played it safe):

I like this target, but think it probably needs a one-target rule and a time limit to make it really interesting...

Hey TC, you should have went for it. haha aim small, miss small. I heard that some where.

The "smart" way to game this target would be to tape up a dozen of them and start shooting the smallest dots first. Stop at the first target where you hit both 40s and work your way down to the bigger circles.

That wastes the least amount of ammo on your way to a clean target. Not exactly the spirit of the competition (which is why I haven't done it), but efficient.

A little game of know your limits. Start with the big 5pt ring and work your way down. Must be shot in that order. Know when to quit. If you miss one you lose all the points for that string. Shoot both strings add up your points. One shot per ring/dot.

Well I went to the Reno gun show and there was 1 CZ 513. I did see a few Kimber 82 and a few vintage Remington and Winchester heavy barreled target rifles, but way out of my price range. I will find something.
I think I will try to shoot the KYL target with my pistol at 25 yards just to see how we do.

ON a couple of targets I missed the 30 pt circle so tried the 40 pt and hit it, twice. However on every target that I cleaned up to the 30 pt and then shot at the 40, missed it every time. Stress related I'm sure cause the rifle could do it but I can't.

Special note for 10xhobby. He must shoot all pistol targets over his shoulder using a mirror. :taz::taz::taz: Just kidding.

For each target indicate your total score and if not already indicated on the target note the distance shot and what type of sights. Ex: Score =xxx, Iron Sights, Scope, Red Dot. No fair shooting iron sight targets with a scope for score.

Rules:

This is an online match. Print off the targets, shoot where and when you want. Come back and post your targets for those in your face bragging rights!! I do encourage meeting up with other match shooters. Any rimfire firearm is eligible. Shooting from a benchrest, prone, sitting, standing, hood of your car, leaning against a tree is acceptable. Using a rest in which the Rifle/Pistol can be locked down is verboten.

Bonus Points

Here is how it will work. This is only on targets that have multiple shots on one target. We shoot the targets as normal and add up the scores like normal. The twist is we shoot for groups as well. For example, if we are shooting 5 shots on each target. If none of the 5 bullet holes are touching you get no bonus points. If two are touching you get 2 bonus points. If three are touching you get 3 bonus points on up to a maximum of 5 bonus points for each target.

Finally for any questions just drop me a PM and I'll get right back to you. Feel free to also PM me with feedback/complaints/errors I make, etc... These matches are based on “Gentlemen's/Ladie's Honor” so go shoot and have fun.

This looks like fun and I'd like to try it sometime, but I'm a bit confused on the scoring. Take the 25 yd irons, there's 4 targets, total of 12 shots with bulls-eyes scoring 10pts. That would max out at 120pts plus a possible extra 3 bonus points per target for 12pts. Seems like highest possible score could only be 132 pts. What am I missing, I've never scored targets before.

ah ha, think I figured it out. The targets for August were different than Septembers perhaps?

You got it. Make sure that you use the current month's target otherwise they will not count. For scoring purposes also be aware that if your shot lands on (or barely touches) one of the lines between the circles, it is counted as the higher score. Ex: Hits the line between the 9 and 10 circle, that shot counts as a 10.

I'll get a target or two up this month. Last month I got distracted by the arrival of my new Springfield Range Officer. Ended up spending my months' range time (and ammo money) shooting that one instead- wow, love that gun.

I also am picking up a CZ 455 this week. I want to try my hand at some rifle targets.

Shot the 25 and 50 yd Iron Sight targets today and the 50 Scoped target. Did an upgrade on the CZ UltraLux that was used to shoot the Irons. Used the Savage BTVS to shoot the 50yd scoped target.

First up the 25yd Irons, Score 126.

Next the 50 yds Irons, Score 114.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8453/7977851366_488d4fd466_c.jpg

50yd Scoped Target, Score 167. I was having real problems with the scope holding zero. Unusual for a Weaver that's less than a year old. Gonna have to send it to Weaver for evaluation.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8462/7977845441_8b99189a88_c.jpg

I never really liked the way that the original stock on the CZ rode the bags, very narrow on the bottom of the forend and difficult to use with a scope due to the drop in the stock at the rear. So she now wears a Rimfire Varmit Thumbhole from Boyd's. It shoots a little better now but the big difference is that it now shoots 4 different ammos nearly equally. Wolf MT, Federal 711B, Aguila Pistol Match and surprisingly, Federal American Eagle 38gr HP HV. I shot another 50yd Iron target which is posted in the Rimfire MOA thread. Groups were much better but off the bull so score for this match was not as good. Here she is in her new clothes.

Thanks. Those are BRNO Target Aperture Sights (peep sights). Actually made for BRNO rifles which are the predecessors to the CZ rifles. On a good day I shoot as well with them as I do a scope out to 75yds. Only good for target work, would not work for hunting.

I'm thinking of banning him from the Iron Sight Targets. :taz::taz::taz: Sometimes TCWriter and me can keep up with him on the scoped ones. Gotta say though he is an excellent, excellent shooter. However, you set the bar for the pistola shooting. I try them every month but not even close to your shooting.

October Targets!!

Deleted 100yd Iron Target as previous matches show not much interest. Added the 25yd Scoped Target.

25 Yard Irons:
See attachment below.
Take 3 shots at each target for a total of 12 shots. Score your target as indicated on the target.

50 Yard Irons:
See attachment below.
Take 5 shots on each target for a total of 10 shots. Score your target as indicated on the target.

Special Note on the Iron Sight Targets for Rifles and Pistolas. The attached targets will be the same for November. So if you print some out and don't shoot them, SAVE THEM FOR THE NEXT MONTH.

25/50 Yards Scoped
See attachment below.
Take 1 shots at each bull. Take as many sighters as you want. On 25yd target maximum scope magnification is 9X, 50yd target max is 16X. Center is 10, then 9, 8, 7,6. Also note the number of X rings shot, this will determine a tie breaker if needed.

100 Yard Scoped
See Attachment.
Take 5 shots. Red center is 12, then 10, 9, 8,7, 6,5. Feel free to print in black and white if desired.

15 yard Pistol Target, Iron Sights or Red Dot. No Magnified Optics.
Use the 25 yd Iron Sight Target
See Attachment
Take 3 shots at each bullseye. Score your target. Target may be shot off hand or from a bench rest. Off hand shooters will compete separately from bench rest shooters.

25 yard Pistol Target, Open Class. Use any optics you want.
Use the 50 yd Iron Sight Target
See Attachment
Take five shots at each bullseye. Score your target. Target may be shot off hand or from a bench rest. Off hand shooters will compete separately from bench rest shooters.

What is meant as "Off Hand"? Does it mean not from a "Bench Rest" while standing?

Off hand is not using a rest for the pistol. Sitting/standing and only holding the pistola in one or two hands is fine just not resting. Good luck with your new Buckmark and shooting. Hope to see your targets.

This is a hard target to shoot with a pistol, I can hardly see it at 15 yards. Keep shooting and posting those targets.
Did you notice that you were more nervous shooting a match target than just practice targets ?? Shooting the match targets makes me work a lot harder on the fundamentals of target shooting, it's great practice.

Excellent post. That's why we do this. I used to shoot at barns in hope that I would hit it 2 out 3 times. Now I shoot at 1" cirlces at 100yds and 1/2" circles at 50yds. Usually hit them 4 out of 5 times when my rifles cooperate.

So I finished the trigger work and ended up with 4 1/2 lb smooth break with a little bit of creep, but it is a ton better than it was. Also mounted a 3-9 Barska scope that I had laying around. this tube fed Glenfield-Marlin 60 has a 15" rate of twist and it is a 22" micro grooved barrel, any idea what ammo would work the best with this combination ?????

I have good luck with Federal Bulk from Wally World for hunting ground squirrels with my Marlin 60, also American Eagle 38gr HV HP. If it will cycle it I would suggest some CCI Std Vel for casual target work. Maybe even some Wolf MT or SK Std + for targets. I had nothing by misfires with Winchester 333 and 555 bulk but could have just been my rifle.

I printed some targets and went to Discount gun mart in San Diego, they told me commercial targets only. They said printer paper shreds more and isnt as fire resistant as commercial targets. They also admitted that they make a little extra money selling the targets. So I cant compete now :(... but not like im that good anyways lol. Maybe next month ill go to another range and try again.

Much better than last time and I know what I need to do to improve next time. I used a .22 round to check & make sure my hits are scored correct, let me know if I am doing something wrong.

A possible solution is to use Card Stock to print the targets. Perhaps the range will accept those. Its much heavier than regular paper. Available at WalMart for around $4 for 150 sheets. Might want to ask Discount Gun Mart before buying. The .22 does make much nicer holes in the card stock as apposed to regular printer paper. Bummer that you couldn't shoot.

I did shoot, but just not the online comp targets. I just bought a couple NRA pistol targets from them for 40 cents each.

BTW, I was shooting my new CMMG .22lr upper. Lots of fun. I was going to get a regular 5.56 upper but Im glad I didnt. I would have had to wait 4 months for the upper and I wouldnt have been able to get 1000 rounds for 40 bucks. lol.

The hard part about that kind of target is the first five go smooth but then it get stressful to keep them all as good as the first ones. But they do build the mental part of the shooting. I will let you know.

Tasco Propoint PDP3 or the Bushnell with 4 reticules, are what I have been using. Just make sure they are bright enough to be used outside, I have some less expensive red dots but they are only for indoor use.

If you don't have time for the 25 yard irons I might have a chance this month...I have a stack of targets with holes that need scoring.

Shot with 10xhobby tonight, what a great guy & holy crap he an shoot!! Not just rimfire either, if you set a half dollar on the group he shot out of my 44mag @7-10 yards it might disappear.

Good times!

Shot the 25 and 50 yd Iron Sight Targets yesterday. Wanted to shoot the 100yd as well but wind was gusting too much.

First up is the 50yd Irons, Score-115. USMCCHET gets me every time on these iron sight targets but my scores are slowly improving. Hats off to him for some (as usual) great shooting).

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8346/8170104308_074f2df53f_c.jpg

25yd Irons, Score-97. Doubt I can do better, but I'll try next week with my Kimber 82G. I made two improvements to my CZ UltraLux. Installed an adjustable iris in the rear sight (no magnification). Also I bedded the action in the stock which tightened up the groups.

Nice shooting!!

How do you all shoot? To shoot my 25 yard iron targets I have been leaning on the bench using my elbow as a bipod. It looks like I need some stabilization to improve my scores. The rules say as long as I am not locked down I am good so one of these little guys should be ok, right?
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/726222/caldwell-zero-max-rifle-shooting-rest

I also think getting out of the 25 yard indoor range into better lighting will help. It looks like some of you can step off your back porch and shoot...I can't wait until I can get me my own little slice of back porch shootin heaven.

That rest is OK to use and here is what I use for the front rest with a leather protecktor bunny ear bag as a rear rest.

http://www.cabelas.com/benches-rests-caldwell-8482-rock-8482-bench-rest-1.shtml

Some folks spend upwards of $1000 for a front rest but then they are as serious as a heart attack about shooting. I drive 55 miles one way to shoot although I live in the mountains there is only one area I can shoot in up here and it has been closed during fire season since early July, BUMMER! I spend more on fuel to go shooting than I do ammo.

Finally was able to get out to Chabot Sunday.

Had a couple others to sort out and thought to bring my 10/22.

It has a Volquartsen barrel and my trigger job, bolt upgrade (includes grinding to .044" head space and radius rear for smooth action) bedded in an old stock of unknown manufacture. Bolt release mod and a Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor. Made my own 20MOA scope base too. Uses my own set screw V-block, Allen take down bolt and my extended mag release. When bedding, I in-letted a tight fitting aluminum insert for the takedown bolt that acts like a piller to dampen movement.

Put on a Barska 10-40 x 50 and used a lead sled.

SK Standard Plus ammo.
I did measure rim thickness and grouped in boxes that all were within .0005".
Did notice small impact change when going from extreme measurements.

50 yards scoped.
179008
179012

A couple are close to the edge but do touch and I can mail original target if asked.

Can always pickup one of these

or I think people have used an empty .223 round case and slide the round in the neck then mesure the overall length. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I used a little piece of 12L14 bored out to simulate a chamber. (Actually thought of getting a Bentz chamber reamer to make one) and dropped rounds in and used a dial indicator that measure in tenths of a thousandth of an inch.

Found almost .002" spread in 600 rounds. Grouped first box with the shortest rounds and used these to "foul" the barrel and warmup.

Then marking boxes 2 - 2.4, next 2.5 - 3.0, next 3.1 - 3.5 and finally 3.6 plus.
These numbers were only for reference and have no direct height meaning.

179449

Originally thought I was going to sort by .0002" but there is a lot of variation when sweeping over the rim with a sensitive indicator so went with .0005".

I also tried a 3x scope on the Browning Buckmark for the bench rest shooting, not sure if I like it yet. I will try it again next month. Oh yeah izzy, you have to shoot some pistola, but you will have to put about two hours aside to do so, it's very time consuming.

Izzy: Nice shooting .............. and all the above targets using irons............. great ......... I am jealous ....... just can't see or hold on target that well.

50 yd scoped should be 142 total for the two touching.

About time, you've eeked me out for the last several months on the 25 and 50yd irons. Just don't count on me doing it again but I'll sure be trying. Funny how competition can make us (at least me) a better shooter. Wish more folks would join the fun.

Yes I wish there were more shooters

I use apeture sights so while considered to be iron sights they are really a step above that. In fact for target shooting, at least out to 50yds they are just a hair less accurate than a scope. Thanks for the comment.

I'll give the December rifle one a try. Didn't see targets posted. Shooting with an old Savage .22, open sights. First time I tried shooting it at 50 yards it actually was snowing, which made bracing off a big rock kind of uncomfortable.

This is going to be humbling/interesting/fun. :D

Just tightened my tech sights to right under 20in lbs, my locktite came loose so I decided to see if a proper torque on the screws would be ok to hold everything down. I really should have waited until I got the proper bit or stopped at 15in lbs because the screw slot started to deform.

I can see why the sights kept coming loose, 15-20in lbs is way tighter than I was estimating without a torque screw driver.

Hopefully I will have some descent targets to post later tonight unless my sights still come loose then I'll just have to try again with some locktite and a good torque.

Tightening up the TechSights helped a lot but I loose the outer ring @ 25 yards so easy at the indoor range. I need to shoot more in the great outdoors.

Need me a target rifle with the aperture sights also, I don't think I can ever get the same scores as you guys with the Kimbers and the CZs running apertures.

Here are my best 2 scores out of 4 sheets. Rugeer 10/22 with Techsights (iron sight) @ 25 yards. No bags or bipods, leaning on the bench. CCI mini mag CPRN ammo.

Take five shots at each bullseye. Score your target. Target may be shot off hand or from a bench rest. Off hand shooters will compete separately from

bench rest shooters.

For each target indicate your total score and if not already indicated on the target note the distance shot and what type of sights. Ex: Score =xxx, Iron

Sights, Scope, Red Dot. No fair shooting iron sight targets with a scope for score. Since we are using the 25/50 yd rifle iron sight targets for the pistol

matches PLEASE indicate on your target if it was shot with a rifle of pistola.

Rules:
This is an online match. Print off the targets, shoot where and when you want. Come back and post your targets for those in your face bragging rights!! I

do encourage meeting up with other match shooters. Any rimfire firearm is eligible. Shooting from a benchrest, prone, sitting, standing, hood of your car,

leaning against a tree is acceptable.

If none of the 5 bullet holes are touching you get no

bonus points. If two are touching you get 2 bonus points. If three are touching you get 3 bonus points on up to a maximum of 5 bonus points for each

target.

Finally for any questions just drop me a PM and I'll get right back to you. Feel free to also PM me with feedback/complaints/errors I make, etc... These

matches are based on “Gentlemen's/Ladie's Honor” so go shoot and have fun.

The range I use does not like silhouette or semi silhouette targets.

Anything else that would work?

Also, there is two targets when you click on the "100 yd scoped" target. One full size and a second page that is reduced.

Acceptable. I just figured since 2 holes touching gets 2 points and there are 2 of them...just trying to beat 10x on the pistol for once. I'll try and get back to the range this weekend and pump out some better scores.

Take 10 shots at the target. Score your target as indicated on the target. Target may be shot off hand or from a bench rest. Off hand shooters will compete separately from bench rest shooters. The Offhand 15yd Target will be a PRIZE TARGET.

25 yard Pistol Target, Open Class. Use any optics you want.
Use the 100 yd Iron Sight Target: See Attachment
Take 10 shots at the target. Score your target as indicated on the target. Target may be shot off hand or from a bench rest. Off hand shooters will compete separately from bench rest shooters.

For each target indicate your total score and if not already indicated on the target note the distance shot and what type of sights. Ex: Score =xxx, Iron Sights, Scope, Red Dot. No fair shooting iron sight targets with a scope for score. You may also indicate what rifle and ammo was used.

There is no limit to the number of targets that can be shot, post the best or post them all.

You only get bonus points for one group of touching holes.

Finally for any questions just drop me a PM and I'll get right back to you. Feel free to also PM me with feedback/complaints/suggestions/ or errors I make, etc... These matches are based on “Gentlemen's/Ladie's Honor” so go shoot and have fun.

Edit: Sorry for all the omissions/errors in this post. Hope I got em this time, if not send me a PM.

NEWS ALERT!!!

FredoSD has made a very gracious jesture for our matches. He is the owner of Star Leather, USA, purveyor of fine leather articles. He has offered a Hand Made Gun Belt as a prize for the February match. So here is how its gonna work.

1. There are 3 targets that will be in the running for this prize.
a. The 25yd Pistol Target, offhand or bench, your choice. Max Score 100pts.

b. The 50 yd Iron Sight Target. The two center rings will be scored as a "10" then 9, 8, 7, etc. That's different than the scoring in this months match on that target but its the only way I could think of to equalize scoring for all 3 targets. Max Score 100pts.

c. The 100yd Scoped Target. To compete for this prize you will need to shoot 10 shots. The center red dot and next white ring will score as a "10" then 9, 8, 7, etc. That's different than the scoring in this months match on that target but its the only way I could think of to equalize scoring for all 3 targets. Max Score 100pts.

2. The winner will be selected by me based on the best score on these 3 targets. In the event of a tie I will use the normal bonus points as the tie breaker. If that is still a tie then the shooters who tie will need to have a shoot-off to determine the final winner. If there is no tie the bonus points will not be counted.

FredoSD will not compete (I don't think he wants his own belt anyway) and I will not be competing since I am the judge that determines the winner.

Many thanks to FredoSD for offering this prizes. Lets have a big round of applause for him.

10XHobby, Ha you're right about that, I could have printed a hundred targets. I hoping to give you a run this month however.......
I guess I'll put my official complaint here.
I shoot the 15 yrd iron/red dot match. I can not see this months targets. Well I can see them but I can not see the bulls eye. The lines are just not contrasted enough for me to know if I'm on center or a bit off. Bassicly all I can see a large black circle. Because of the dark back drop I can not see my previous shot either. I know "Boo Hoo, poor me" Needless to say I will not be posting any targets tonight

Well it's in writing so I guess it's official now.
Izzy has it right I will be donating a hand made gun belt in your choice of color as long as it is black or some shade of tan.
The gun belt will be lined and will be your choice of a stiffener inserted to prevent sag or without a stiffener.
The belt will come with 7 holes vs. the average 5. This allows you to use the belt with a IWB or OWB holster.
You can and I suggest you send me the buckle you would like on the belt. If not you will be subjected to my fashion sense in buckle choice.
All *Star Leather USA* products are made by hand by me in America.
Turn around time from the time the winner contacts me with their belt measurement will be 2-3 weeks. It could be a lot less depending on my work load at the time.

Good luck to all of the shooters.

Here is how I measure belts, please use this system for correct fit.

Target shot with RWS r50 from a Savage mk II BV with a Nikon 6-18x40 scope. Benchrest, bipod and rear bag completed the set-up. Score using above method was 190 with applicable bonus points for groupings. My next best score was using SK std+ for 184. Target printed at 100% scale.

Edit:
After a quick PM to the match coordinator, I rescored using the official scoring technique. New score is 222. Hope it's clear as mud what i did on my target.

The rules are stated in the first post of this thread. There is no limit on the number of targets that you can shoot. There are pistol targets and rifle targets, see the first post. No witness needed. Download and print the targets that you want to shoot. Shoot em, score the target, take a picture of the shot target or scan it and upload it to this thread.
