So I printed out the 50yds iron sights targets that I will hopefully get to try today. Damn they're tiny! I hope I'll be able to see them. lol

Time to break out the RWS R-50 I guess...

Took the New Kimber 82G out today to zero the iron (peep) sights and decided to try the 25 yd Iron Sight Target. This rifle shoots better than I can. Its a joy to shoot. Score on the target is 97.

For anyone wanting a very reasonably priced target rifle I can only say this is a great shooter. They will soon be gone (CMP Sales) perhaps as early as this summer.

Thanks.Definitely the gun, not me. It shoots better than my CZ, @ 25yds anyway. Gotta see how she does as longer ranges. Waiting for rings to scope her.

Nice. Those should work on a CZ as well I would think. Wish I had found those. I ordered the BKL-257 and BKL-257H. One of those should work and the one that doesn't will work on the CZ which has crappy rings right now. What scope are you mounting? I have several but think I'll mount a Weaver 40/44 6.5-20x44mm for 50/100yd shots. Just got it and nice glass.

That's a nice scope, I have one on my Marlin 22WMR. Excellent glass there as well. Rings arrived in the mail and the BKL-257H(high) worked perfectly. Good product it appears. Good luck in this month's match.

So I shot the 50 yd. and 100 yd. scoped today. Kind of a chilly day at Los Altos, coming from balmy Santa Cruz with no jacket. Bummer. The fog rolling in later in the afternoon, and the increase of the cold wind cut my day short. In between shivers I managed to shoot a 55 at 100 yds, and a 111 at 50 yds. 50 yard was shot with RWS R-50, and the 100 was shot with SK Standard Plus. Rifle is my Savage MkII BV with a Nikon 6-18x40 AO. I was going to shoot the 25 yd irons this month, but I cant even see the target!!! My eyes need work apparently. I played around with my air rifle with a 4x scope and could barely see the holes.

I'll let DWH say for sure but I think yes.

That is a SICK 50 yard target. I know those savages can shoot I just can't seem to get my hands on one that will.

SnS and covingtonhouse are shooting some good targets. I was out shooting the 50 yd scoped targets today and was doing pretty well. I was in Temecula, 60 miles from my house. My phone rang and it was one of my neighbors telling me the house just up the hill from mine was ablaze. Took off so fast I nearly forgot my rifle but did leave the targets. Luckily the fire department got to my house with two trucks to defend it and 5 others to put out the fire in the other house. It is a total loss but no damage to mine.

Actually the other house is 100yds away but the entire area is covered with huge pine and cedar trees so that was the big concern as well as the manzanita trees which go up like a box of matches in a fire.

Anyway, no targets to post but heck at least the house and the dog are OK.

Went to the 25 yrd indoor range last night with a friend's .22 rifle that's been sitting in her closet for the last 15 years or so. Probably hasn't been fired in 20 years. I cleaned it up yesterday afternoon and took it to the range last night. Nice shooting gun. I was very pleased with the results, especially since I've never fired this gun before.

I'm surprised to see I am the first one posting up some targets this month :)

I went to the Vallejo fun show on Saturday and picked up a super clean Mossberg M44US from a dealer I have gotten to be friends with. He bought it from CMP years ago, added an aperture front sight to it, and also purchased a magazine and trigger guard. It's in beautiful shape and I will post up some pics of it soon. I'm using the Mossberg S-100 aperture rear sight.

I went out to USI yesterday morning and here are the results at 50 Yds:

Shot the 50 yd iron and scope targets and the 100 yd scope target today. First target is the 50 yd irons shot with CZ UltraLux and Wolf MT ammo. Score is 47.

Second is the 50yd scoped target shot with Kimber 82G, Weaver 20x scope and Wolf MT. Score is 19.

Third is the 50 yd scoped target shot with Kimber 82G, Weaver 20x scope and Lapua Center-X. Score is 22 (Expensive ammo does make a difference).

Fourth is the 100yd scoped target shot with Kimber 82G, Weaver 20x scope and Lapua Center-x. Score is 54. Four Xs and 1-10. Three shots in the same hole at lower left of X.

The Kimber is getting better every time I shoot it. Might have to get a part time job to afford the Lapua Center-X. Interesting is that is shoots to the same POI as the Wolf MT, just more consistent.

Shush, don't tell anyone but its the AMMO!!:taz::taz::taz: Seriously the Center-X ammo made a huge difference at the 100yd range. The Wolf is nearly as tight at 50 but at 100 the Center-X really shines. The Weaver scope helped a lot as well. Even though the magnification is less than the one I was using it is much clearer and the contrast is so much better.

Is it OK to print the 100yd target in grayscale to shoot with irons? The color doesn't show up at all, at least with these old eyes. Oh, and thanks. Of course some luck was involved as well.

Ammo that my Kimber likes in order of accuracy: Lapua Center-X, Wolf MT and Eley Target (about the same) and Federal Target 711B. Doesn't care much for any Aquila ammo or CCI SV or any High Velocity ammo. Also shot some SK Match Rifle, Eley Club and Eley Match. Those shot pretty good but not as good as the first three that I mentioned. Of course your Kimber may have slightly different preferences.

I bought a box of the Lapua X-ACT from Eabco just for S#!+s n' giggles when I was doing my testing for the Savage. I'm sure glad it didn't like it.... $25.00 a box is way out of my price range. Center-X for me didn't work out too well either. Maybe now the rifle's broke in a bit. Funny how some rifles actually like cheaper ammo better!! Nice shooting by the way!!! Gonna be hard to beat. I think if you shoot the irons as well as the scoped, we'll need to make a target just for you with some really light color patterns next month. Heh

My Savage BTVS does not like Center-X or Eley Target or Eley Match or Eley Club. Seems she only likes Wolf MT and SK Standard Plus. Shoots Federal Target 711B pretty well but not as good as the others. From my experience with 5 different 22s they all seem to like different ammos the best. My CZ and Kimber seem to like the same, almost. The Savage is the pickiest (is that a word?) of all.

PS: Where did you get the Center-X, how much per box?

Cahampion Shooters Supply. $15 a box if I remember right. My Savage likes the Eley Tenex really well too, but thats out of my price range. So far, it's RWS R50, RWS Rifle Match/SK Std + (tie for performance) and 711B.
I don't think there's anything in the standard velocity ammos I haven't tried unless it's been discontinued, or out of stock. If I had known how picky my BV was I think I would've gone 10/22T.

I feel exactly the same about my BTVS. Too picky with ammo. Heck even though it shoots inexpensive ammo badly it also shoots like a shotgun pattern so I can't even zero the scope. It does just OK with Eley Sport but always a flyer or two out of a 5 shot group and I doubt it is always the ammo as I shoot that same ammo in a Zastava Z5 with better results.

I also get my speciality ammo from Champion Shooters Supply. Last purchase of the Center-X was $9.50/50 + shipping. I usually order a bunch of something to cut down on the shipping costs.

Hi Izzy,

This was the first time shooting this rifle and all I had was some Wolf Match. I just received a horde of SK Rifle Match and some Lapua Center X on Thursday, so my Son and I are headed down to the range today to give it a try and see if we can improve our score. I'll report back on the results.

EDIT: OK, here is the only target I shot Saturday for the rimfire match. It's doing well but I think I can make some improvements in the trigger and maybe get a different size aperture and I might get some better numbers:

The rules are followed I am certain, he just didn't want to write a friggin' novel to cover the details of a simple .22 LR rifle purchase that would fit on a post card in most other states with room for the Bill of Rights.

Talk about jumping to conclusions and stirring up trouble. Do you work and lurk for Brady here or what?

Get a grip dude.... Just a simple question... I've purchased C&R's from private parties, but never at a gun show. Just wondering if ther are any other rules that apply? Would you like to expound your voluminous knowledge to a newbie? or just be a D!@K? Thanks in advance, and....have a great day!!!

It all depends on if you are buying from an individual or an 01FFL. Most of the guys who have tables at the Vallejo show are 03FFL C&R holders, (meaning they are NOT 01FFL) so you can buy a C&R rifle and it's cash and carry. I have a COE as well, so even buying a C&R from a dealer I can walk out with it the same day. If you are buying from an 01FFL and don't have a COE then you have to wait 10 days which totally sucks because the guy buying over at the next table could get his the same day and you have to wait.

The best part of that transaction was that I walked in with a Finnish Mosin I wanted to sell and the dealer across from my friend's table paid me my full asking price for the Finn, so i turned around and bought the Mossberg and had money left over to buy another Finn :) When I got home I snuck into my office carrying both rifles and my wife asked from the kitchen "did you sell your rifle?" and I said "yes I did" and kept on walking :D :D :D

Good shooting, getting better. More shooting will help tighten the groups as well. Be careful working on the trigger especially if you do any honing. Let me know how the trigger work goes. My trigger is fairly crisp but a hard pull.

Went to the range today, shot two 50 yd scoped targets. One with SK std+ and the other with RWS R50. Neither one is really worth mentioning, except there's not too many posting this month. RWS (picture) got me a 15 out of my Savage mkII BV with a NIkon 6-18x40. SK got me a 9... poor performance all around. I shot a box more of each for groups just to make sure it wasn't the rifle. Nope, can't use that excuse.

A big thanks to sNs for filling in for DWH. My recreation would be cut in half without these matches so I really appreciate your efforts SurfNShoot. Hope we have a lot of shooters this month. These matches have improved my shooting so much I can't even describe it. Well, spent a lot of $$$ in the process, but what the heck, can't take it with ya! :taz::taz::taz:

OK, I am finally getting my targets up after a long delay!! I went to take my kids to the range one morning last week and ended up leaving my wallet in my motorcycle from the night before so I didn't have enough cash to get in to shoot :(

I ended up sneaking out on Saturday for a few hours and this time I forgot to bring my Mossberg M44 so I had to shoot the Izhmash ;)

I can't get the target to scan horizontal, so you'll have to adjust the view on your end, sorry.

PS - I hope you are feeling better soon, Izzy.

Nice shooting, which Izhmash do you have?

Thanks for the thought. Right shoulder is locking up so some surgery is in my future (waiting for authorization). Can't shoot cause I get no warning when the shoulder is gonna lock up and when it does, OUCH! then gotta go change my underwear. :taz::taz::taz:

I have a CM-2 Izhmash that I found at an online estate auction a few years ago. It's in perfect condition but did not include any of the extra apertures that would have come with it new so I need to order them from MTguns.com

Here's a photo of it, sitting with one of it's distant relatives from 100 years earlier ;)

On the shoulder issue, I am having a very similar problem with my left shoulder, and luckily I shoot right handed so it is only a slight inconvenience right now but I am having trouble getting my doctor to acknowledge there is a problem. I can't extend my arm out to the side or go very far over my head, so for example if I go through a drive-thru, I can't extend my hand out to get my change. Also when riding my motorcycle, I can't manually signal a left or right turn since those are both the motions I have trouble with. Getting old SUCKS!!!

If you want to have some fun, take the 1000yd version of that target and fire at it from prone w/sling at 100yds with iron sights.

When I first developed those targets I tried to clean the 1000yd target and just couldn't do it. Best I ever did with my CMP HR M12 with the iron sights off my Palma rifle was a 199-14X and that was with a really good lot of Eley Tenex from 1988. There are shooters with really refined 22LR target rifles that no doubt can do it with uron sights from prone because the 10-Ring is about the same size as the 100yd NRA Smallbore target.

Congrats to both of you!!! Let's see if we can get a better turnout this month, myself included. I did go shoot, but to embarrased to even post my targets. I had just a bad day over all at the range on sunday.

PLEASE READ!!OK. I want to try something new this month with the scoring. I like to keep the amount of shots to a minimum as to not waste ammo but still be able to have a good range in the over all scores. We will do this only on the 50yd Irons/scoped targets. Here is how it will work. We shoot the targets as normal and add up the scores like normal. The twist is we shoot for groups as well. In this case we are shooting 3 shots on each target. if none of the 3 bullet holes are touching you get no bonus points. If two are touching you get 2 bonus points. If all three are touching you get 5 bonus points for a potential 15 bonus points at the end. Please give me your thoughts on this as well.

I shot that 50yd target (assuming it's the same as last months) yesterday using the 10/22 w/ Tech Sights and the front sight completely covered the entire black circle and more making it near impossible to tell where to shoot. DWH,

I have to say I have not tried it with a post front sight. I do use an globe when shooting these. I will take this into account for next months. I will try with my Mossberg that has a front post on some test targets for next month. Thank you for the input.

I like the bonus points idea!! Our local archery club has a steel deer silhouette with a cut out for the vitals that we use for our twice yearly tournaments. Good for double points. At $6-$15 per arrow, it can be costly if you miss! But it adds a whole 'nother dimension to the fun. And the "CLANG" when someone misses can be heard over the whole range.

So I went to the range today with all intentions of shooting the 50 and 100 yd scoped. I got there a little later than normal and the 50 yard was jam packed. Having people spotting from empty target spots doesn't help either. I shot the 100 first thinking I might be able to slip over to 50 later. First string of 100 yds was RWS Rifle Match for a 49, 52 and 55. Second string at 100 was SK standard plus for a 54, a 56 that could be a 58, and a for sure 58. Hit the range today for the 50 yard scoped. Sunny, no wind, pleasant temperature. Shot three targets each of SK standard plus, and RWS rifle match, and two targets of RWS R50, with a correction group to set up the next ammo type. I scored 93, 84, and 80 with the SK. With the RWS rifle match I scored 91, 83, and 83. Finally because I didn't think to print more targets, I got a 90 and an 81 with the RWS R50. Shot with a Savage MkII BV w/ Nikon scope.

Great shooting on all those targets. On your center 25 yd target (first pic) where you scored it as a 54 I think its worth another look. The distance between the 10 ring to the 11 ring is .12 and a Wolf Match bullet measures224". Measurements taken with a digital caliper. Its not my call but I think you might have shot a 55 on that target. Then again I have older eyes but its $%^& close to a clean target IMHO. Again, not my call.

Final outing this month. Decided to shoot the 100 yd scope target. As I had not used my Marlin 925M .22WMR in some time I mounted a Weaver 40/44 6.5-20X scope on her to give it a go. Ammo was CCI Maxi-Mags. Score is 58. Probably the best I have ever shot this rifle. I especially like the 4 shot group in the X ring. The shot in the 10 ring was the third shot. Well its been a while since I last shot because of a new job, summer relatives, and my sons scouting events but God smiled upon me today and I was able to spend a few quiet hours with my rimfires at ASR today and this is how I did.

Probably pulled it but not sure. Beautiful day for shooting, about 80 degrees, bright sun light and no wind. Couldn't ask for more.

Dang izzy. That marlin is shooting really well!!!

100 yard Scoped- 60pts

SurfnShoot:

I'm throwing out an honorable mention to IZZY with his 58 at 100 yards just because that little group scares me. Must have shanked the one. That is some shooting!!!

And what we have all been waiting for. September's Match.

Print all targets at 100%

25 yds irons:
smaller targets 2 shots 10-8-6-4 center 3 shots 10-8-6-4-2
See attachment below.

50 Yards Scoped
See attachment below.
First Target is 12,10,9,8. Take 3 shots. If touching take your bonus points. The rest is gonna be a bit tricky. I really like this target and can't wait to see peoples results. This is a hostage target and you don't want to shoot the hostage or you get -points. Take one shot at each hostage situation. if you break into the hostage you lose all point and take the minus for what you hit. look closly before you shoot. Some its safer to take a head shot and some safer to take a body shot. You choose whats best for you.

50 yards Irons
See attachment below.
Take 5 shots on each target. 12pts for the X ring. Take your bonus points for touching shots.

100 Yard Scope/Irons
x-ring 12 points rest scored at usuall. Take your bonus points for touching shots.
See attachment below.

BONUS POINTS
Here is how it will work. We shoot the targets as normal and add up the scores like normal. The twist is we shoot for groups as well. For example, if we are shooting 5 shots on each target. If none of the 5 bullet holes are touching you get no bonus points. If two are touching you get 2 bonus points. If three are touching you get 3 bonus points on up to 5 bonus points for each target.

Rules:
Shoot target from any position
Add up your scores

Just a quick question on the 50 yd. scoped target. If a hostage is hit, are ALL points up to that point lost or just the point value for that particular hostage situation? E.g. shot a 30 on the bullseye, and a 10 on the first hostage situation, then head shot the hostage on number two. do I lose 7 PLUS the 40 accrued. or just the -7?
thanks!!

surfNshoot
09-05-2011, 6:43 PM
you only lose the points on that particular situation. There are 9 situations if you clip a -7 you get -7 for that situation. You don't lose points for any other situation. Is that clear?

It's been a while since I shot the monthly rimfire match (that's what adopting a little girl will do to you).

Got to the Dunsmuir range early this morning (before it got windy; it always gets windy).

These are the 2nd and 3rd 100 yard targets I shot:

http://chandlerwrites.com/images/100yd1.jpg

http://chandlerwrites.com/images/100ydtarget2.jpg

58 & 56 pts.

By the time I got around to the hostage target, the winds were picking up but still not bad, and yes, I managed to kill a hostage (though only after determining -- via advanced hostage body language training -- that the hostage was a bad guy in disguise...).

Actually I shot two targets prior to this one and killed a couple hostages, and the one that came after -- when the wind was zipping pretty good -- was guaranteed to get me thrown off any SWAT team on the planet...

http://chandlerwrites.com/images/hostagetarget.jpg

I'm giving it a 93, though I'm unclear why I get 5 points for shooting off a terrorist's ear...

I shot some nice scores with the Savage TR last year, but have only got it out to the range three times this year. Still, it's rounding nicely into shape, and I'd suggest it's shooting better now than when it was new.

That hostage target is big fun; I found it a year ago and have been using it at home with the airgun (the tiny .177 pellet is a little easier to thread around the hostage's head).

Enjoy the nice weather, TC

Hey, thanks. It's the gun, and a chance to finally shoot without wind.

One thing I have figured out is the cleaning regime for the Savage. When i first got it, I'd clean the hell out of the barrel after every use, and got pretty inconsistent groups until the end of a shoot.

Now I just run a dry patch through the bore and only clean every half-dozen trips or so, and suddenly I'm getting much better groups (SK Standard+ target ammo).

I love it when results and laziness coincide...

This looks like fun! I live 7 miles from the range. This would be good competition for me and my son. I have oldie but goodie .22s. Remington model 513-T matchmaster with the redfield iron sight that was shot for the first time last month and a Winchester model 52 sporter with a Redfield 4 power scope. The sporter was made in 1948 and not fired until a year ago. Both mint condition and more accurate than I am.

Yes it does. I shot competition for a very short time in 1985 then life took turns with a bride, kids, etc. I was very fortunate to buy a gun collection in 1983. The majority of my guns are pre-64 mint. As for .22s I refuse to buy new ammo since I have 5,000 plus Western SuperX .22 long rifle from the early 50's. (80 cents per 50 back then!) Me and my son shoot the same ammo so all is equal.

Saw this thread and thought I'd give it a try. I didn't score anywhere near others who have posted so far, but I figure this is good practice regardless. I was shooting a Remington 513t with some rather low velocity ammo that has bean laying around the house for over 20 years.

I hate to make exscuses for poor shooting, but I found it difficult to even lower my head enough to line up the sights on that rifle, so next month I think I'll try shooting a different gun. Also I think I'll print more than one target and post my best attempt (if that's within the rules that is).

Welcome to the matches. I was not a very good shooter 1 yr ago but since participating in these matches my skills have greatly improved. Not a competition shooter by any stretch of the imagination but I can at least hold my own in these matches once in a while. Keep at it and you'll get better. Shoot as many targets as you want, post em all or just the best ones. Totally up to you.

I probably shoot 30-40 targets every month in these matches.

Despite our adopted daughter (and another on the way), I've been able to get a fair amount of trigger time shooting my target airguns (.177 pellets) at home.

We've got three acres so my neighbors aren't much of an issue, but even in a much smaller lot it's doable (the 10 meter gun isn't very loud, and the "field" gun is shrouded so the hammer's louder than the report.

It's nice to have an option to shoot even if you've only got 20 minutes and the range is 30 minutes away.

Shot the 25 yd iron target today with two different rifles. First was my Zastava Z5 with a new Leapers 4 MOA Red Dot sight. Worked great once I figured out that the adjustments were backwards. Left was right and up was down. Score was 104 with Eley Targt Ammo. I also shot this rifle with American Eagle 38gr HV HP el cheapo ammo and scored a 103. Only one point difference between $1.59/50 and $9.00/50 ammo. The AE is decent stuff @ 25 yds.

Second target was my CZ UltraLux with BRNO Target Sights and Federal 711B Ammo courtesy of CMP. Score was 106.

If none of the 5 bullet holes are touching you get no bonus points. If two are touching you get 2 bonus points. If three are touching you get 3 bonus points on up to 5 bonus points for each target.

Rules:
Shoot target from any position
Add up your scores
Write score, CIRCLE YOUR SCORE, distance and whether shot scoped or irons on your target
Post target for braggin rights!

This match is an online match. You choose the time and place you want to shoot. Just print the targets off. Head on down to your favorite shooting spot. Set the targets at the correct distances and have at it. Post your results in the thread for everyone to see. We just work off the honor system. Please let me know if you have any further questions. You may also PM me.

Cool deal... I may just have to give this a shot some time. I don't often get to go to the range, but I'll print off some targets and try it out. Here I was figuring you guys held an appleseed-esque meet and competed head-to-head. :P I need to put in an order for some good ammo, and the next range trip I take (likely in November) I'll bring half a dozen of the 50 yard scoped targets with me.

Edit: I didn't realize different targets were used for different months. How does one discern what will be used for the month to come? I've seen the threads regarding the results of the matches, but not one that is being actively participated in the month the shoot is taking place in. (it looks like I might have answered my own question.. the info goes into the previous month's shoot at the beginning of the month via post-edit, yes?)

Targets from this months thread will be shot and posted this month. Shoot as many as you like and post all or just the best. At the end of this month SurfNShoot will post the results/winners in a new thread titled "November Rimfire Match" and also the targets for the November match. The matches will definitely help your shooting at least it did mine. Hope you join us.

Prolly wont have much time this month to shoot these but Ill try my best

Sorry to hear that but hope you get some chance to get out and shoot. I went out today to shoot and found my National Forest Range is closed due to fire hazard. Bummer, now I gotta drive 60 miles one way to shoot.

Gatotsu77
10-06-2011, 10:30 AM
^That is a big reason I don't get to shoot much, 75 miles each way. :/

Izzy43
10-06-2011, 11:25 AM
Luckily I am retired (and I planned for it). Problem is there is fewer and fewer areas to shoot in and fewer and fewer public ranges as well. 75 miles is a real haul to go shooting and even at 25mpg, thats 6 gallons or about $25 round trip + range cost + bullets. Getting expensive to even shoot .22s.

Gatotsu77
10-06-2011, 6:27 PM
Yep... usually around $25 in gas. (thank god I don't drive an SUV or a truck) Fortunately, I take my dad along with me some of the time, and he helps split the cost. Would be real nice if I could convince my mom to let me buy him a rifle. (she used to absolutely hate guns, but she's slowly losing that negativity towards them) Lame as this might sound, I'm looking forward to moving back to Colorado. My family moved to CA when I was 14, so I had no choice in the matter. I'm 25 now, and hoping to move back to CO in the next couple years.

Let me get this in my brain correctly.
You are 25 and you want to convince your mom to allow you to buy your father a rifle?
Just do it!
Put the new rifle in a WeedWhacker box and wrap it with a ribbon. Tell your dad to wait and open it outside in the garage, since it's an outdoor tool.
Don't forget to include a brick of ammo!

Make sure he saves the box for future gun purchases!

SurfnShoot- Great idea to have a postal match!

Out to the range today and shot the 50 yd Iron and Scoped targets. Shot 3 of the 50 yd Scoped targets and Scores were 119, 120 and 124. All shot with the Kimber 82G with Simmons 6.5-20X scope. The lower two scores were with Federal 711B ammo and the 124 score was shot with Lapua Center-X ammo. Proof that the more you pay for ammo, the more accuracy you get.:taz::taz:

Shot the 50 yd Iron Sight target with the CZ Ultralux, aperture sights and Federal 711B ammo. Score was 109. CZ really likes the 711B, hates the Center-X. Proves each rifle has its own personality. :taz::taz:

Also tried the 100yd Scoped Target but my Weaver Scope crapped out after the 2nd shot from the Marlin .22WMR. Scope went out of focus and would not adjust with the Adjustable Objective. Real bummer as I've only had the scope for a few months. Now to search for the receipt for warranty work.:eek:

Only uploaded the best targets.

@ Otteray - If it were that simple, I'd go and do it. (assuming I had the funds available.. I've had a few unexpected expenses lately, or I'd be mounting a new scope on my Savage Mark II BTVS) My mother has been very much against firearms since she was a teenager - I won't go into the story, but I will say she was threatened with a loaded gun, after which she refused to be around firearms.

My father was a precision shooter and hunter when he was a teenager, (he didn't meet my mother until he was in his 20's) and my grandfather served in the U.S. Army, so my father's side of the family had quite a strong affinity for firearms. When my father moved out with my mother, she made him get rid of all of his guns; he has not owned a firearm since. My parents do not know that I purchased a firearm while living in their house, though I suspect my father has figured it out from our discussions since my having moved out. (I've never said it outright, and don't plan to)

My mother has relaxed quite a bit about firearms, particularly because my sister and I are both adults now. She's permitted me to bring my guns to her house twice now, and shows much less anxiety about the topic than she used to. I want to be respectful of her wishes, (the only reason I bought a gun while living at home was to protect my family) so as of yet I've elected to not buy my dad a gun.

I've considered buying myself a secondary rifle, likely identical, or at least very similar to my current rifle. I'd enjoy being able to take dad to the range and having a side-by-side competition - that may be the closest I'll get to buying him a gun for now. (Lisa, my girlfriend, is hoping to buy herself a gun but cannot afford to yet; besides, she's looking into a .357 mag revolver for her first gun :P)

For a while, I'd debated buying a Marlin 795 for some semi-auto fun as an inexpensive secondary, but I think the Savage may have spoiled me a bit. (that and I prefer bolt-action rifles, though shooting a friend's AR-15 and G3 were a lot of fun) Perhaps I'll talk my mom into letting me buy him a rifle next year. I'd like for him to be able to enjoy having it and look after it properly, not hide it from his wife.

@ Izzy43 - Nice shooting! The ammo really does make a difference... for cost-savings, I was shooting CCI Blazer 525 packs through my Mark II, and BOY was I grinning ear to ear when I loaded a few mags with SK Jagd Rifle Match. First 1/4" 3 shot group I'd shot at 50 yards. I'm sure this is kinda lame to the guys who have been doing this quite some time, but I was satisfied with that. :D

I made it out today mainly to check the function of my Grendel and to practice some positional shooting. I did shoot the 50 scoped target. This KIDD trigger I got for my 10/22 is the bees knees. I couldn't quite catch Izzy with his 82g but close. I'm gonna have to try some Center-X or Eley out of this thing.

Sitting, standing, prone, leaning against a tree, bench rest, bipod, sandbag or other rest is OK. Some day I think I'll try holding my rifle upside down like they did with the pistols on "Top Shot". Now that'd be a challenge. Hope to see your targets.

Great day at the range, still wind, bright sun and no AR-15 distractions. Shot the 50 yd Iron Sight Target with the Kimber 82G with aperture sights and Score was 114 with Federal 711B ammo. Improved my previous score for this month.

Also shot the 25yd Iron Sight Target with the Kimber 82G with aperture sights with four different ammos. Scores were 108(Fed 711B), 110 (Aguila Match Target), 118 (Aquila Match Pistol) and 120 (Lapua Center-X). I was pretty impressed with the Aquila Match Pistol ammo as it nearly shot as well as the Lapua Center-X and is $7 cheaper per box. May be my go to ammo for this rifle.

I posted three of the 25yd targets in case someone may be interested in how each ammo performed. Couldn't post 4 so only posted the best three, ran out of attachment space in my account.

I was really amazed that the Aquila Match Pistol shot so well. It was my last box out of a brick. Hope I can get a bunch from the same lot.

Made it out to the range, and while I wasn't thrilled with my 50 yard scoped targets, I shot five and got a 119 and a 118 (119 shown).

Things got interesting just before I left, when the wind died and I thought I'd take a poke at the 100 yard target. Scored a 60 on the last of three (the wind was falling), and didn't have time to try any more.

I just can't seem to get that fifth round in the X ring.

Anyway, Savage MK II TR, shot off a bipod (beanbag rear rest) and Millet TR-1 4x16 scope (SK Standard+ ammo).

http://troutunderground.com/images/october100ydtarget.jpg

I gave myself two "touch" bonus points as the connection between the two shots and #3 was just a tear (somebody's old staple under the target).

Thanks Izzy. I sure hope I get another chance at that 50 yard target, and your targets have made me want to get something with aperture sites (like my 10 meter target airgun).

If you decide on a rifle with aperture sights, Kimber 82G would be my first choice but difficult to find now at a reasonable price, second (and nearly as accurate) would be a CZ UltraLux (28" barrel so a long sight radius) , CZ Lux with 24" barrel or the CZ military trainer which is less expensive but basically the same rifle as the LUX with a Beech instead of a Walnut stock. Then add some BRNO Target Sights. Great shooters, all.

Just depends on how I am shooting whether the Kimber or CZ is the best shooter on a given day.

Yeah, CMP got a fair share of my $$$ this year. I was lucky to get in on the "Rusty" Kimber 82G before they sold out. Gotta check on them every week if you are looking for something as things come and go pretty quickly there sometimes.

Finally made it out to the range, though the wind was blowing hard enough that I didn't even try the 100 yard target (plus my printer's ink cartridge is running low, and that turkey target uses a lot of ink).

I shot four 50 yard scoped targets: two 164 pointers and two 169 pointers (only posted the 169s).

Because the wind was gusting I set my targets low to the ground and fired off the range's concrete pad (using a shooting mat) instead of the benches.

A former benchrest shooter friend swears the ground effect gives you a little break on the wind at ground level, and while I haven't tested it enough to know whether that's true, I did better today than I thought I would.

Got out today to shoot the 50yd and 100yd scoped targets. 50yd scoped target score was 173, shot with the CZ Ultralux and Weaver 6.5-20x scope. Score on the 100yd target was 78, shot with the newest in the stable of guns, the Savage BVSS .17HMR and Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x scope.

There's a couple inches of snow on the ground and it's 31 degrees as i write this, so while I was hoping for one more shot at that 50 yard target -- and Izzy's score of 73 -- the chances are looking pretty slim.

Izzy, I'll see you in hell... 8-)

Hope you get a chance to shoot again. As far as seeing me in hell.....don't hold your breath, my wife says "bad weeds never die" so she says I'll be around for a long, long time.

We got dusted with 2" of snow last night and was 26 degrees this morning. Warming up now so doubt the snow will last long. Happy Turkey Day!

My local National Forest shooting range is still closed due to fire hazard (guess they haven't bothered to look out of the window and see the snow) so I/m driving 120 miles round trip to shoot. Yeah, I know, I'm addicted but costs less than drugs or alcohol:taz::taz::taz:

Went up to Los Altos today and shot the 50 scoped with the Savage MKII BV. Managed a 174 with RWS R50. I was pretty disappointed with my shooting today. Does anyone else find single shot bulls troublesome?

I think they are tough, for me at least, as its only one shot so a little more stress in each shot. Especially if you start out shooting good, then the pressure builds on each additional shot. I think it does help to show that each shot is just as important as the last. Consider that putting 5 rounds in 1/2" @ 50 yards is considered very good shooting and we are trying to hit a very small dot at the same range, time after time. I think its not supposed to be easy. I enjoy the challenge. Nice shooting by the way.

Thanks Izzy. Yeah... all the targets ae challenging, and I'm always learning. I have the same problem in archery too. It's a lot harder to hit multiple spots well, than to hit the same spot over and over for some reason. I'm wondering if this is something between the eye and muscle memory, or if it's just in my head. I've never researched it.

Wow, I can't believe we are in December already. I hope to see more new shooters. I know some of you will be getting some new toys for Christmas. Let’s see what you can do with them. To the new shooters: don't be intimidated by the targets you see here. All the top guys you see were all in the newb shoes not too long ago. These are not custom bench guns you are shooting against ( I use a bull barrel 10/22). You can shoot this well and we are more than willing to help you. Please ask questions. Post targets and ask for criticism. We want to bring you up to the top level. The competitiveness is what makes it so fun.

November Winners

Great shooting guys!!!!!.

25 yard Irons: USMCCHET with a 77

50 yard Irons: USMCCHET with a 122

50 yard Scope: covingtonhouse with a 174

100 yard Iron:

100 yard Scope: Izzy with a 78

And now........ December's targets!!

Print all targets at 100%

25 yds irons:
See attachment below.
10 shots total. Take 2 shots at each target. Scoring: 12, 10, 9, etc.

100 Yard Irons
Take 5 shots. centerring is 12 then 10, 9, 8, 7, etc.
See attachment below.

100 Yard Scoped
Head shot bonus!!
Take 5 shots center mass. Scoring 12,11,10,9, etc. then take a bonus head shot. Get it in the white and add 10 points. Miss the white. No bonus points.

Rules:
This is an online match. Print off the targets, shoot where and when you want. Come back and post your targets for those in your face bragging rights!! I do encourage meeting up with other match shooters. I shoot with USMCCHET at ASR range and anyone is welcome to join us. I'll post when I'm going next.

Bonus Point
Here is how it will work. This is only on targets that have multiple shots on one target We shoot the targets as normal and add up the scores like normal. The twist is we shoot for groups as well. For example, if we are shooting 5 shots on each target. If none of the 5 bullet holes are touching you get no bonus points. If two are touching you get 2 bonus points. If three are touching you get 3 bonus points on up to 5 bonus points for each target.

Very sorry for being late on this guys. I may need to ask for a backup person in case my work gets out of hand again. Any takers?

Unfortunately I know what you mean. I've had to take a bit of a break from shooting. Been having some lower back issues of my own. Laying down prone really compresses my lower back. To bad paddling a surfboard puts me in the same position. gonna have to change my name from surfnshoot to bored as hell.

I feel ya there.. I can't bend, lift, twist, etc. right now.. lifting a 16oz water bottle with my arm outstretched hurts like heck. 3 herniated discs, two of which are real bad. It is driving me nuts not being able to do much in the way of anything. I did take a friend to the indoor range to try out my 1911 a few weeks back.. though my back really kicked my *** for it. I couldn't even manage that now.. really hoping the ESI helps some. If it does, I'll be getting my butt down to ASR some time late this month to participate. :)

Shot the 100yd Scoped Target today with the Savage 17HMR. Not real happy with the results but will post target. Score=50. Two shots touching on the right where the 10/9 line is. It would appear that the scope was zeroed low. Gotta fix that. Group is 1 5/8", not acceptable for a .17HMR.

I can't wait to get into the .17hmr game. Gonna get the .17hmr and .22lr barrels when I get the new CZ 455 precision trainer. Still looking for someone that has one available or that I can even order yet. Anyone know?

Shot the 100yd scoped target again today. Score a little better at 52 but the group was much better. No touching holes but group measured 3/4" center to center much better than the 1-5/8" group yesterday. Don't know what happened to the head shot attempt. Couldn't have been the shooter, must have been a weak round. :taz::taz::taz:

Apparently they have 3 available. Link: http://www.davidsonsinc.com/consumers/subsites/inven_sql.asp?preview=&manufact_combo=CZ-USA&category_combo=None&price_range=None&mod_ser_combo=None&g_type=None&finish_type=None&calib_combo=22LR%7C17HMR&sight_class_combo=None&num_rec=50&instock=all&offset_rec=0&b1.x=57&b1.y=5

This shop is in Temecula, nice guy that runs it. I have purchased several firearms from them. I think a lot of gunshops use Davidsons as their supplier. Might want to check locally. At first the rifle seems kind of pricey but when one considers its really two rifles, its a really good deal for two CZs, sort of. Their 22WMR Semi-Auto is next on my list.

I hope to see that CZ will find out how to get a .22wmr to cycle well. The .22wmr has always been plagued with this problem in semi's.

According to the folks @ rimfirecentral.com the CZ functions perfectly and is very accurate. Cons are the trigger and limited to 5 shot magazine. Its kind of an ugly beast but not many 22WMR semis around and CZs are well know for quality. Pay a little more, get a lot more.

top one looks good at 50

50 scoped. I may be wrong but it looks like you just bareley scraped 2 -7's. You make the call though.

with the bonus points of 3 for the 3 touching I counted up 85 on the 50 scoped.

Some GREAT Shooting!!!! I commend you for having the balls to only go headshots.
