these annirs are amazing arent they? the freakin action and trigger brake are stunning. like nothing else. i took my 1517 mpr in 17hmr to a place to shoot on monday and at 50 yards sitting with a front rest i placed 10 shots all on the same .5-1" area in a little black diamond. as long as its not windy, these will drive tacks! they just wear your arm out if your free standing.

Yeah the MPR is a heavier stock. Beautiful non the less, I went with the Beavertail for the price factor. Bud's has the MPR for around $650, and originally I was shopping for a CZ 453 Varmint...but for around the same price I got the Anschutz instead :)

A Place to Shoot is in Saugus right? Where they have the Tactical Rimfire match? I'd like to go someday.... for the match that is.

Anybody going to the range this weekend?

Last chance to post targets for November.

Bring a turkey sandwich & some pumpkin pie for lunch.

What more can you ask for, shooting & the best leftovers on earth?

We have the tact / prec rimfire match the 1st Sat of every month. It starts at 12:00 noon and goes until about 4:00 or so. I'm the MD so if you have any questions PM me or just look in the Precision Rifle section for the match announcments.

Also note it is limited to 22LR only.

I've been meaning to shoot it - at home with my .177 target airgun if necessary - but hell, it's been cold as hell up here (3 degrees yesterday AM).

A little warm weather, and I'll shoot this one full of holes..

3 of my targets shot from today. These were shot from the prone posistion with a bipod and rear bag. The ammo used was SK std+. Slight wind 58deg.
Range finder said 51 yards

On a few of the targets i took an extra shot because i lost track of my round count. Either way it only would have changed the final score by one point.

I threw in a target shot at 150 at the bottom. The through the scope pic below it will show the exact target at 150 yards.

The rifle- Sako Quad, Lilja barrel, Falcon Menace scope, McM A5

Yes its shooting much better now... Thank you! I still need a factory firing pin rather then my home made one but it seems to be good for now.

I did get it done by Larry Gish. Im not happy with it. It will release if you cycle the bolt to fast. Once its set it passes the drop test and mallet tests. Even when it releases upon closing the bolt it won't fire because the bolt isn't fully locked down yet but its annoying as hell. Jard makes a Sako and a Tikka trigger that should work in the Quads as well thats fully adjustable. I'm considering giving it a try.

Oh really? I've been on the fence about sending my p94s trigger to him...I have the screw as far as it will go and it's super light pull. I'll just hold out till I find my Jewell trigger. Lemme know how the Jard works out. I doubt I'll get to post this month...weather has been lousy on my days off.

dwh100
01-01-2010, 3:48 PM
EdCo,

Is there a good reason why you can't shoot sitting, or at a bench?

I put the sitting rule in to mix it up a bit, and to perhaps offer shooters a chance to do something they don't often try. Earlier last year there was a standing off hand match.

I'd prefer that we stick to the criteria set above.

But... I guess you can shoot anyway you wish, just let us all know that you bent the rules if you post a target.

Happy New Year!

25 Yrds

Shoot one shot at each of the 25 numbered targets.

If needed...One shot may be used prior to shooting each row to sight in using the non-numbered target at the left.

Add your targets up.
Top score is 250

I printed it on my home printer and the targets were way smaller then regulation sized BR targets. They should be. about the size of a half dollar and the paper needs about double the size to fit everything to size how its supposed to be.

Yeah, I was wrong, its smaller then a .25 cent, its penny size!

I shoot most of these type comps when they come up and try my best I mostly shoot 3 gun comps but am quite interested in precision shooting so
I just try em out. Well they are mostly kinda frustating but getting better
as I learn reloading an such. But last weekend I took some of these targets
with me and after our match I setup and tried to get a good score. I did better the first time when it started raining half way through, and a shooter friend with his 22 with the scope off level out scored me with larger groupings........man its tough to be me !! Gonna do the 25yd with a german
training mauser singleshot bolt this weekend if time allows.

Well its kind of embarassing but I'm posting cause I was determined to shoot in this match. I am still happy about it because I learned alot about my new rifle, scope, various ammo and shooting technique. I shot today at my local range. Temp was around 70, calm wind, humidity 40% so a good morning to shoot.

Rifle is a Savage MKII BTVS with a Mueller APV 4.5-14x40 AO scope. Used a bipod from a sitting position at a bench. Target @ 50 yds. Total score was a paltry 57 using Federal Automatch 40 grain round nose cartridge. Score is not so good but I had a ton of fun seeing how well I could shoot. Hope there are more matches so I can see if I can improve. Thanks for having the match.

I seem to only be able to post the links to the photos and not insert them directly into the post. Included a photo of my shooting coach.

but was unable to gain access because of other match

Lets see if this month gets more targets posted!
February finally had 2 excellently shot targets posted!
For a bit there, I thought the quarter, and the penny were going to win!

Shoot this target printed at 100%:

http://www.reloadbench.com/pdf/files/1%20Inch%20BR%20SQ.pdf

50 yds with scopes
25 yds with irons or red dots

Take 2 shots, from any position, at each of the 15 square targets for a total of 30 shots.

Scoring:
Break the outside of the black square score 1 pt
Fully inside black square score 2 pts
Break outside of the inside white square score 3 pts
Fully inside inner white square score 5 pts

Top score 150 pts

Post your targets with pertinent info:
total score, firearm used, position used, and local conditions.

Have fun!
Good Luck!

Much better target then the Feb one. :) With the scoring and the little micro 10x ring...it was difficult. haha. I'll post this one up for sure.

PS: What if the bullet was completely inside of the white but a tear touches the black? would that be 5 or 3? should of made it more simple, like:
outside of black, 1
in black, 3
in white, 5 or something...less to remember, less headache. but its all good. Your rules! :D

So... It turns out I can't count my shots.

Put 3 into one target and only shot one each in another 2. Scored al 3 in the one target and scored the single hits on the others. Total score of 85.

Reasonable happy with the results, slight breeze threw off a few shots and I threw off a few my self. Second time out on the range with the new toy so I'm looking forward to next months challenge!

Here is mine shot today at A Place to Shoot (yeah I thought today was the 3rd when I dated the target).

50 yards - rifle: Savage MK II BTVS, Nikon Buckmaster 6-18X40 MD in Weaver rings and EGW 20MOA rail, Harris Bipod; Ammo - SK Std Plus

Score - 103 - 9 @ 10, 2 @ 5, 1 @ 3

I was dancing with a full value right to left wind and it pull me out on three of them almost a 4th. The middle top row did scratch the 10 ring as verified with my target magnifier (otherwise known as a "cheater").

I'll clean this before the month is over, just need to shoot it early in the morning with no wind.

abesh
04-08-2010, 12:46 PM
I had a hard time calling that – the bullet mark is just barely outside the 10, but the rip marks do go into the 10. I guess I can go with 95, but I too hope to get a 120 before the end of the month if I have the time.

By the way, good shooting to you (especially for shooting of a bipod). The SK ammo is just something else isn’t it! I just wish it was easier to come by. I bought a box of 500 about a year ago, and I have been rationing it.

Hehe, day after I shot the 100 target I was at another range shooting at 100 and things were going good, both with me my gun and the wind. I shot the below target and then preceded to put 25 holes into a 1" X ring in another. I thought "hey let's put the april target up and get all black dots at 100". LOL, nope wind started to pick up and also change direction. Might have ended up with a 60 score on the target.

Hell, I couldn't even get the Bronco up the hill to the range at this point. Snow's going fast, so April's still a possibility.

Thanks guys. Under a magnifying glass, the upper left bullseye really doesn't look like a 10; I scanned the target instead of photographing it, and maybe the target getting pressed flat is affecting things.

In any case, a 115 gives me a reason to shoot it again, though one month, I'd love to see a 100 yard target.

I haven't messed with anything on the TR, which is pure fun on a stick. Our 300 yard range will melt out soon, and then we'll see how it really shoots.

Can't argue with a man's honesty though if you want me to send you my rimfire "cheater" I will LOL. I tried again this weekend and managed to eek out a couple of 110s - dammit - last target was clean until the 11th shot which went cleanly in the 5 ring prompting me to shout obescenities and throw the last shot into the 5 ring as well. One more weekend to clean it - then I need to concentrate on getting everyhting ready for our own 22 match.

Someday I hope to make it down for one of your APTS rimfire matches, (though nine hours is a lot of driving). It's one thing to shoot paper at a time of our own choosing, but creating accuracy on-demand is a lot more fun...

I did a two day rimfire match last year - similar to the large HP tactical matches except without the prize table an will probably do another this year towards late summer or early fall (right before time changes again). That said it would be great to have a bunch of ya from up north come down - can promise some good shootin and good food afterwards.

I see no one has answered your question and I am not an official of the match but Hey, it says "April Rimfire Match" and the .17HMR is certainly a rimfire round so I'd guess its ok. Hi, I’m pretty new to Calguns, and since I just got a Zastava Z 5 .22 lr. I thought it would be fun to break it in on this April target challenge. My wife and I put about 75 rounds through it sighting it in and playing around with it. We tried some Fiocchi ammo, which didn’t seem to group very well, then switched to some 30 year-old Remington “Mohawk” .22 lr. (obsolete) which grouped a lot better. We wound up shooting up all the “Mohawk”, so I switched to Winchester 333 bulk can ammo for the April target challenge. The scope is a Simmons .22 Mag 3x9x 32 mm. with adjustable objective. Trigger pull on this gun is gritty and ferocious, so I think some trigger work is in order to get better accuracy, once I finish experimenting with different ammo. Both targets were shot at 50 yards in moderate but variable winds, 58 degrees, between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM under partly cloudy conditions.

The z 5:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3297/4567130670_d466b0cb57_m.jpg

The first target had most of the shots to the left of center. I counted a score of only 65, but looking at it now I think I may have cheated myself.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3297/4566498793_02858f9432_m.jpg

I moved the windage two clicks to the right for the second target. 75, better, but still not very good. I'll try the May targets with some different ammo. This is fun!!

Entering this on May 1, but I shot it on April 30 just before sunset. How's that for a last minute entry?!
Was doing great until I got to shots # 10 & 11. Interestingly, those two cartridges were from another box, but out of the same brick and with the same lot number on the box flap, so I think it is just pure coincidence.

I took the iron sight and red dot guns out today to see what I could do. As soon as my new scope rings get here I will break out the Savage TR and see what i can do at 50 and 100.

First was my Mossberg 44US at 25yds. I'm fairly happy with the score.

Second was my Sig 522 at 25yds. I was pretty shocked how accurate this thing is. Check out that center target. Yess that is 3 shots.

Shot the first target today. Savage MKII BTVS, scope was a Mueller 8.5-25x44 AO Mildot reticle (set on 16X) @ 50yds. Ammo was Federal Lighting 510B, 40 Grain Roundnose High Velocity. Light wind at 5-10MPH from 7 O'clock. Bright sunlight, temp was 68 degrees. Total score was 46. Scope is new so I'm still getting used to it but I feel like I'm shooting better than April. Not so much the scope but improving technique with practice. Gonna shoot a couple of times each week to hopefully improve. Getting my Marlin 60 back together this week so will use that with a red dot @ 25yds. Love these matches.

Well today was a beautiful day. No crazy wind – just a gentle breeze.
The only setback was I forgot my spotting scope (a Mueller APV rifle scope:o), and there just so happened to be a couple of other shooters – so I could not just walk down to my target after every group.

You have some impressive targets too, especially the one with the red dot … I would have thought the red dot would completely cover the target area (well the 3 point ring at least). Either way nice work, and try the other target too – it would be perfect of a red dot because there is only one target on the sheet.
Good luck

Wow, very good shooting by everybody so far! I'm breaking in a new .22 LR and experimenting with ammo.

I’ve been reloading all my centerfire ammo for nearly fifty years, and haven’t owned a .22 for about twenty years. I used to just use whatever .22 LR ammo was at hand, and that was always good enough for hunting and plinking with .22 rifles and revolvers.

In March I got a Zastava Z5 bolt action .22 LR because I missed shooting a .22, and my wife doesn’t like shooting the hi-powered stuff. To tell the truth, I’ve also gotten a lot less enthusiastic than I used to be about going to the range and shooting, say, 7mm Rem. Mag. off the bench. Twenty rounds with that sort of caliber and the activity ceases to be enjoyable, and it’s hardly worth the time and expense to go to the range to shoot twenty rounds and go home.

I did some sighting in and shot the target series for the April rimfire challenge, and realized that I’d nearly forgotten how enjoyable it is to shoot a .22! I also noticed that the ammo made quite a difference in terms of accuracy, and since working up loads isn’t possible with rimfire ammo I decided to get a variety of .22 LR brands and use the monthly challenges to see which ammo works best in my rifle before I start fooling around with trigger adjustments and other meddling. So, for this challenge I’m starting with four varieties:

1. Federal American Eagle 38 gr. hollow point.
2. Aguila Subsonic 38 gr. hollow point.
3. Aguila Super Extra 38 gr. hollow point.
4. Aguila Interceptor 40 gr. round nose.

I have on hand, and eventually I plan to try:

a. RWS Target Rifle 40 gr. round nose.
b. Aguila Super Maximum 30 gr. hollow point.
c. Aguila Super Maximum 30 gr. round nose
d. Aguila Super Extra 40 gr. round nose.
e. Winchester Lead Free 26 gr. Tin Bullet.
f. Fiocchi SM280 Super Match.
g. Winchester SuperX 40 gr. round nose.

The rifle is a Z5, 3x9x32 mm AO Simmons scope. Targets were shot on 05/07/10 between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, 65 deg., wind moderate from the left. The use of different ammo required re-zeroing between each target. In the trial on target A at 100 yards it appears that my re-zeroing failed, with the point of impact being adjusted too far to the right. The order of firing was: Federal Am.Eagle, Aguila Subsonic, Aguila Super Ex. HP, all at 50 yds. at Target B, and then Aguila Interceptor at Target A after moving to 100 yds.

None of the ammo proved to be very accurate, but this may be due to the rifle or the shooter. Aguila Subsonic and Aguila Super Extra appear to be the best, with scores of 56 and 57, respectively. Federal Am. Eagle lagged behind at 43 on Target B.

Results for the Aguila Interceptor on Target A, 11 points are inconclusive due to the zero failure, and will have to be re-shot.

Hmmmm... that center target on the Subsonic looks more like an 11 than a 13. I'll check the target, but it doesn't make much difference. -2.

Hey Rip were you cleaning the barrel between ammo like when you'd work up a CF load.
I found it hard to gauge 2 ammo although the Aquila ammo does seem to work in my marlin.

RipVanWinkle
05-08-2010, 10:35 PM
Hi, Boilermaker. No, I didn't do any cleaning at all during the range session. In fact I didn't clean the bore until today, and it looked like a fuzzy tunnel before I cleaned it. It was just taking too long with having to sight in again after every ammo change. With CF load development I look for the tightest groups and then zero after I find a tight spot. In this challenge you actually have to hit the bullseye, so I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone, kinda.:p

I've been trying this method of load development with my .220 Swift:

http://optimalchargeweight.embarqspace.com/#/ocw-vs-ladder/4529811360

You shoot the various powder charges in a "round robin" sequence, so the amount of fouling and barrel temperature is distributed evenly over the different powder charges. It seems to require a certain amount of interpretation.

Hey Rip
If you are testing different ammo, it may be good to clean the barrel when switching brands – this way the lube from one brand does not interfere with another. I noticed in some of your targets the groups start spread out and then seem to close in - assuming you shoot like me, left to right top to bottom.

This may be helpful
http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1503968

I am by no means an expert, but here is how I do it:

I start by cleaning the bore as I normally do --> a solvent soaked patch followed by a dry one until the patch is clean white or a light shade of grey.

Shoot 25 rounds or so (1 round per inch of barrel length) to get the bore seasoned with the lube on test ammo #1. I usually start with 10 rounds at the swingers, then switch to a paper target just to see if the groups are tightening up.

After the "fouling shots" I switch to shooting at 1" diamonds for group size. I find the diamonds easy to get lined up on, but any target with a grid pattern, squares, etc, will work just as well. Here is a link to a PDF version of the target I use:

http://www.uspalma.com/Targets/PDFs/...20Diamonds.pdf

When I hang the target on the backing, I use a small spirit level to make sure it is hung plumb and level; that assures me that my crosshairs are plumb and level when I line them up on the points of the diamonds (or the lines if using a grid pattern, etc). The purpose, of course, is to minimize the chance of accidently canting the rifle.

I shoot five rounds at each diamond, and shoot five diamonds (one row) before switching to the next ammo to be tested.

Between each batch of ammo, I clean the bore as I normally do (see above) and start over with 25 rounds to season the bore with the new ammo's lube. Repeat as above

When finished shooting, I measure each group for size (center-to-center) then add the sizes of the five groups shot with that ammo and divide by 5 to get the average group size for that ammo. I also make note of the smallest group size and largest group size for each batch. While the smallest average is usually a good guide to the best ammo, you really want the one with the most consistency.... ammo that gets a small average but has itty-bitty groups balanced out with a few shotgun patterns is not ammo you can trust to perform. If you have the math for it, what you are after is "standard deviation."

Once you've narrowed down your ammo choice to, say, the top three you run them against each other head-to-head in different conditions (temp, wind, etc) and pick a final winner. I also go another step and figure out which one gives me the "best bang for the buck" by working cost into their rankings. That lets me identify the best practice ammo and not just the best match ammo.

I'm sure the pros have some nifty tricks I don't know about, but there you have how I do it. Bear in mind you want to have as close to an ideal shooting setup for the test (a good rest, a rear bag, a relatively windless day, etc). You also want to be consistent in your setup from one type of ammo to the other, so you can do a fair comparison. Also remember you can only fairly compare ammo that you shoot on any given day; you can't compare ammo shot today with ammo shot yesterday. I usually take the top performer from Day 1 and shoot it again with the ammo tested on Day 2 so I have a point of comparison.

Yes, I was shooting left to right, top to bottom on target B. Also I assumed that the 5 to 10 shots required to sight in after each ammo change would be enough to "pre-poison" the bore before the ammo was shot at the challenge target. Maybe that is not enough and there is a carry over of fouling from the previous ammo? Gets complicated, doesn't it?

next time Im going first thing in the morning when the wind is at its slowest

Finally made it out to the range with my Savage TR/Millet TRS-1 (4x16). Shot it off a Caldwell bipod (kinda flimsy, buy the Harris) with a rear bean bag.

First target is the 50 yard which tapes out at 67 points:

http://chandlerwrites.com/images/May50ydtarget.jpg

Naturally, I printed a couple 100 yd targets but left them in the printer tray (old age is hell).

It's not official, but I hate to waste a trip and I'm working on getting this out to 200-300 yards, so I shot the 50 yard target at 100 yards (wind was picking up - been only partly breezy before then):

http://chandlerwrites.com/images/May100ydtarget.jpg

Holding up the bigger 100 yard target behind the 50 yard target suggests the upper left is a 23, and the upper right is a 22.

Perhaps I'll get back out again (already put the 100 yard targets in my bag), and see what I can do.

Next trip is to the 300 yard range, so maybe June should offer up a 200 yard target... 8-)

Shot today near Rainbow Valley, Ca. Rifle is Savage MKII BTVS 22lr with Mueller Scope. Ammo was Federal AutoMatch. Humidity was 100% (heavy fog), no wind with temp around 60 degrees. Shot @ 50 yds with bipod only.

Upper left bull may be a 13 hard for me to tell if all three shots hit the red. Center and Lower left bull each have one shot that just barely nicked the red. Lower right I scored as 11 but one may have nicked the red, again hard to tell.

Total score of 60 and doubt I will get any better. Could be a 58 due to upper left bull. I'm happy with either score. Only one shot in the white and I've not done that before and the most bulls I have had. I'll keep shooting more this month and anxious for next month's targets.

I managed to get out on Sunday 5/16 for another round of blasting at Targets A&B with a variety of ammo. The setup was the same as the last session; Zastava Z5, Simmons 3x9/32mm AO scope, shot off sandbags. Shooting took place between noon and 4:00 PM, mid sixties, mostly sunny, wind light and variable at the beginning, increasing to 10-15 mph toward the end of the session.

Sighting in was again necessary before the shots for score for each ammo type. For this session I shot, in order, the following:

At 50 yds., Target B:

1) Winchester SuperX 40 gr. RN
2) Aguila Super Extra 38 gr. HP
3) Aguila Supermaximum 30 gr. RN
4) RWS Target Rifle 40 gr. RN

At 100 yds., Target A:

1) RWS Target Rifle 40 gr. RN

Winchester SuperX:

Aguila Supermaximum 30 gr. RN. I was shooting at the Chabot Gun Club in Castro Valley. Shortly after the beginning of this session a wild turkey wandered onto the firing line, prompting the Range Officer to order a "Cease Fire" until the turkey did its thing and eventually wandered off. Everybody was itching to nail that bird, but discipline was maintained. It might have affected my score on this target. :

Summarizing the results so far, including the previous sessions:

Target A:

1) RWS Target Rifle 40 gr. RN - 18 Points
2) Aguila Interceptor 40 gr. RN - 11 Points

Target B:

1) RWS Target Rifle 40 gr. RN - 59 Points
2) Aguila Super Extra 40 gr. RN - 57 Points
3) Aguila Subsonic 38 gr. HP - 56 Points
4) Aguila Super Extra 38 gr. HP - 52 Points
5) Winchester Super X 40 gr. RN - 50 Points
6) Aguila Supermaximum 30 gr. RN - 40 Points
7) Federal American Eagle 38 gr. HP - 40 Points

Looks like RWS is coming out on top, especially if you look at group size instead of target score, but so far not even in the running for the challenge!:p

It's not me, it's the gun. If I don't screw up, the holes just appear where they're supposed to.

That's not bad for a $419 rifle. Real happy with the TR.

Can't wait to see how my TR does this weeknend now that my rings finally came in. only took 2 months to get them... Lazy ring makers!!!!

This looks like a lot of fun! do these get matchs update every month? I just bought a ATI GSG-522 and this looks like it would be fun to participate in. Don't get the GSG out of "jail" untill the end of the month so maybe i try next month.

If only I kept a consistant sight picture.

shot this with my Brno model 3. took the Model 4 out too, but this was my best target today.

Those are fine groups! You came so close to a 75. What kind of iron sights do you have? If your sight picture changed between each target I can see how you could get such nice groups but just slightly displaced from target to target. Or it could be that the rear sight is just a little loose, but I guess in that case your shots would vary from shot to shot (wider groups) rather than from target to target.

The reason I'm curious is that I had a similar experience a couple of months ago. I was shooting my Marlin 1894 for the first time in a long time and I was getting decent groups, but the point of impact seemed to move from target to target. The sights on that rifle are Williams receiver peep sights, and I used to hit anything I aimed at with it. There was nothing wrong with the sights, but I couldn't focus on the front sight; I could only see two (or three) blurry front posts, so the problem is with my eyes! But unless you're a geezer like me that shouldn't be an issue.

I played around with drilling small holes in some sheet metal and looking through them to see if I could improve the depth of field enough to see things clearly a the front sight distance. Anything under about 0.0625" seemed to really help. Then I found this:

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=324116

0.050" aperture for my sight. I swapped it for the original, bigger aperture and I can now see a single front post.:) I haven't had a chance to shoot the gun yet, but the sight picture looks good!

The sights are peep sights with a post as the front sight – I can change the front inserts to little circle type sights, but that seems to encourage the bad habit of looking at the target rather than the front sight.
This seems to be the best pic of the sights I have at the moment:
http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/mm364/abesh84/Brno/Brno3.jpg

I have thought about getting the adjustable aperture – it has a camera shutter like system that lets you adjust the peep size
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=222580
but I always seem to find something else to spend my money on.
I hope to go shoot one more time before the end of this month, so I’ll see how it goes. Either way this is a fun and relaxing hobby.

I think they make it in a couple of different thread sizes. I am not too sure what thread size the Brno sights are… that is the other reason I have not bought one yet. :whistling:
As for the particular link – it was the first one I found and I put it there for illustration purpose only.

Hey Guys, I just printed out the targets on my printer. I thought they came out small ( very small! ).

But after scrutinizing the posted pics I finally figured it out (I printed out the right target based on the bullet holes).

I take my hat off to you guys! Excellent shots!

Where I shot is just too windy (excuses, excuses, excuses...).:o

Hey RVW, Get some peeps and some glasses to see them clearly and practice, practice, practice. It really has alot to do with shootin the firearm and knowing it

Good advice, but I've owned the Marlin 1894 since 1972 and I know it better than I know myself. I put the peep sights on it when I first got it. The problem is presbyopia, and for shooting with peep sights it doesn't quite get fixed with bifocals. Everyone will have this problem if they live long enough. You need to increase the depth of field (the range over which everything is in focus), and the easiest way to do that is by using a smaller aperture in the rear sight. No amount of practice will help if you just jump from very short focus to focus at infinity and back again. The gun will hit what it's aimed at, but you have to be able to see the front sight clearly and have depth of field.

http://img.att.net/photos/83/38059383/493467/1894x1.JPG?3123968e-3d50-4602-b3db-d88ae58ee041

Here's a picture of the rear sight:

http://img.att.net/photos/83/38059383/493467/1894x3.JPG?ddf01b9d-a37b-43db-95d9-9063747270d6

The aperture at the top just unscrews and can be replaced by another, smaller aperture. I got the smallest one at 0.050" and it looks like it's going to work, pending actual shooting trials. They only cost about $6. The one in abesh's link is even better, and adjusts smoothly from 0.125" all the way down to 0.022", but it costs $47 or so. There are trade-offs though: the smaller the aperture the dimmer the sight picture.:(

I went to the range again today. There was a slight breeze from time to time. I was hoping to clean both targets. I started with the 25 yd target, but after getting through a page and a half I reached the conclusion that I was probably not going to do better than the ones I already posted.
So I put up 4 of the bigger targets at 50 yds, and this was the best of the four
http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/mm364/abesh84/Brno/MayRF4.jpg

Did not get a perfect score, but oh well … it was still fun. Nice shooting to everyone else too – especially some of those 100 yd targets – scope or not that is great shooting considering that even a gentle breeze can throw off your shot at that distance.

I cannot wait to see next month's target(s)

Targets were shot @ 50yds with a Mueller scope on Marlin 925M (22WMR). Wind was light, temps in the 70s. Ammo was CCI 40grain Maxi-Mags. First time trying this rifle in the monthly matches, looks promising. Scores were 20 and 21.

First off, thank you dwh100; these monthly matches are great.

Secondly, great job on your first try Izzy. I hope you know what you are getting into: you will probably start going to the range more and more just hoping that you come home with a perfect target:rolleyes:, but at least your trigger finger will stay sharp.

Well I went to the range yesterday late-afternoon for a couple of hours. I decided that I am going to try using a scope this month – probably b/c I am afraid I may go cross-eyed trying to look at this target through peep sights:TFH:.

I took the cheap red-dot off my 10/22 and put the Mueller scope on. When I got to the range it was windy, and not a steady wind either but random gusts. So I figured I would zero my scope at 25 yds. Surprisingly it did not take long and the groups were fairly good too, so I figured I would give the match target a shot at 50 yds. Re-zeroed the scope at 50 yds and shot the targets. Scored a 19.

http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/mm364/abesh84/RF%20matches/Junetarget1.jpg

I have been a bit spoiled shooting the Brno – it has a light trigger that breaks clean as glass. So, the 10/22 trigger took a bit getting used to (even though I had done a bit of trigger work on it a while back) and I am still not completely comfortable with it. He11, before my first shot I had to check twice to see if I really took the safety off. Once I get that down I have a feeling that I might get a perfect target this month:rolleyes:.

Compared to some of the others, the score (36) is somewhat disappointing, if I could get the 3 Maggie's drawers flyers out of there the score would have been respectable.

Rifle is an old Anschutz 164 sporter, and Weaver D4 scope handed down to me ages ago. Remington Golden Bullet (what I had).

Pretty good shooting, only one non-bull target. I tried again today but didn't do as good as last time. Can't go to the range much more as I am already going 2-3 times per week. Oh the joy of being retired. NEEDMOAMMO!!

abesh

Izzy, it must be great to be retired. I cannot wait, and I am just 28 – well I will be next week. Although, I am the next best thing to being retired – a student. I am still looking for a summer job, but so far no luck. So I have decided to enjoy my summer while still trying to find a job. With that I started a refinishing project on an old Swiss rifle. I have the wood stripped and almost prepared, but I just cannot decide if I want to stain it or not.

Anyways a bit of advice that you may or may not need. I am assuming you have the same Mueller scope (AVP) as me; the one with the adjustable objective. The key is to not trust the distance markings on the scope, but rather adjust the focal plane to your actual target.

Here is how I do that:
1. Set your rifle steady on bags or a rest (scope set to 14x).
2. Adjust the objective till your target is the clearest image.
3. Without touching the rifle in any form, and while looking at your target through the scope, move your head left-right up-down.
4. During step 3 pay attention to see if the target moves with respect to your crosshair. if so, keep adjusting until you get the crosshair to stay on the exact same spot on the target regardless of how much you move your head.

My friend at the range told me about this, and it made a big difference for me. If you already do this then great, but if not you will be surprised by how much more accurate you will be.
For my scope the sweet spot is almost between the 50 and 75 marking if the target is at the 50 yd line.

To Cmichini
Glad you had the time to go shoot.
As far as your score, the problem could be the ammo (or the loose nut pulling the trigger as is often the case with me:cool:).
Also I think you have a “parallax free” type scope, so you cannot adjust the scope like I mentioned above; in your case it is VERY important to get your eye in the same position with respect to the scope for each shot. This will ensure that your crosshair will line up in the same spot for each shot.
Also did I mention to change your ammo (and run a few patches through your barrel when you do).
Oh and post some pic of your rifle too (this goes for every one … I love pics:drool5:)

NOTE: I am not an expert, nor am I claiming to be one. These are a few things that I was told or I noticed and they work for me. If anyone has other suggestions please do post them; I will try it and if it works FOR ME I will use them.

Same scope on my Savage MKII and no I have not done that but rest assured that I will and thanks for the tip. My AO is set to about 35yds when shooting @ 50yds so maybe that part of the problem (besides me) when shooting that rifle. On my Marlin 22WMR I have a Mueller 6.5x25x44 AO and that combo seems to shoot a little better. Might be that the bullet remains supersonic at and beyond 50yds.

Thanks for the tip I'll try it out on the Savage. Oh yeah, start thinking about retirement NOW. I started thinking about it around 19 and retired at 58. Time flies.

Thanks for the feedback. The ammo probably had a good bit to do with my issues, but I think the bigger problem may have also been with an inconsistent position as well. This rifle, which I haven't shot in a while has consistently given good groups with all sorts of ammo.

Considering the scope's limitations (didn't know about parallax free type scope - I think I have some reading to do and a possible scope change), my money is more on consistency of positioning. Where I was shooting did not lend itself to any modicum of consistency in position. The bench I was shooting from was ridiculously high and in many other ways a contortionist event to get into position. At first I had to sit with one of my legs under my butt (brain?) to even get high enough to get any reasonable position. I then switched to stacking a couple of chairs so I could at least have some relative consistency in position.

If I can get out again this month, I'll make sure I get to a more 'friendly' range and see what I can do.

I'll try to get a couple of pix of her up. She is quite a nice looking little rifle.

Thanks again. The helpful feedback is one of the great things about calguns.

Shot again today. Only one point better than my last one but felt much better. Rifle was Marlin 925m on bipod with Mueller scope and no rear support other than my shoulder (maybe I should get a bag?). Ammo was CCI from RMAMMO.com ("1sanity" member here gave an alert on this deal, Thanks). Slight wind and about 75degrees at the range. Shot at 50yds. Score was 15. I could feel everytime I missed, just gotta work harder on holding on the target. Anyway, lots of fun with the 22WMR.

One of my goals is to have at least one round in every bull. Nearly did it today.

PS: Picked up my S&W 22A (22lr) pistol today, what a sweet gun. 300 rounds of 3 different ammos, not a hitch

Reached one goal today, at least one round in each bulls eye. Shot two targets both with a score of 7, my best yet. If I could put the right side of one target with the left side of the other the score would have been ZERO. Finally got out to shoot the target. I only brought 3 targets this was the best. CZ452 American, Mueller APV, 50yds, Wolf Match Target, varying wind @ 5-10 mph from behind left. Score 3

Nice shooting and that 3 looks very much, almost, maybe, could be a 2. I tried some of that Wolf Match Target in my Savage BTVS today. Six inch group. Couldn't believe it. This gun only seems to like the cheap 22lr ammo.

Went out after work last night, hardly any wind. Had to see if i could get smaller groups, a little better than the first one I posted.

Looked like fun so I had a go.

50yds (USI range)
CZ 452 American (LH)
Weaver V16
Dynapoint (2005 vintage)

Scored it wrong first time. I thought you had to clean the white circles to get the Zero. The smaller black scores are corrected..... Scored 8

Fun stuff, I'll play again

So my 8 score stands. Cool.

Are there any limits on the rifle/scope/ammo combo here?

After a whole month of trying to get out to shoot this match, with anything from two weekends of just too windy to several weekends of not enough time, I finally found some time today to do it! I looked out my window this morning and saw that it was dead calm. By the time I was 9 out of 11 miles toward the range, conditions have changed drastically. I saw a 5 MPH breeze with 10 MPH gusts. The majority of shots, I held over to the left at 1/2 inch. The result was a total score of 2 points.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4141/4748816093_569ef723b3_b.jpg

One of the shots on the rightmost bottom target just barely broke the circle.

I tried to shoot the target a second time but this time it was just too windy and unpredictable. A half inch hold over to the left resulted in some shots jumping a whole inch to the right. Other times, the hold over would result in shots going up 0.75 inches. I gave up.

I got back home and saw that it was not blowing at all. So, it was windy out at the range but dead calm in town.

AAAHHHH! My eyes. I don’t even know if my printer is capable of these colors – jk.

These targets look like fun (hypnotizing and mesmerizing). I think I need to order some rings for my Brno.

Congratulations ego08 … great shooting.

I was not happy with any of my 50 yard targets so they are in the trash. I'll try again tomorrow.

My 25 yard target turned out pretty good though. I know Abesh and that Brno will probably clear it but I'll be on top for a few days at least!! Total score: 112 with bonus points. I'm happy :)

Wow SurfNShoot great shooting!
My Brno can definitely clear the target …. The problem arises when I become part of the equation:p

I hope to go on Monday. I just installed Tech Sights on my 10/22, so I will probably be playing around with that a bit – maybe see how I do with these targets.

Then around the 15th, my friend and his wife are visiting from India, so I probably won’t get to shoot these targets then. Although, I do plan on taking them shooting till they are sick of it.

Well have a great and safe Independence Day, and go shoot while the weather is good.

Took the Brno out today.
Was a beautiful day with just a nice gentle breeze. I printed 4 targets – 2 color and 2 B/W.
Best score was 103
http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/mm364/abesh84/RF%20matches/Julytarget1.jpg

Here is another one
http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/mm364/abesh84/RF%20matches/Julytarget2.jpg

The different colors (and different shades in B/W) make it challenging to keep a consistent sight picture.

By the way: do you guys use the six-a-clock hold? That is put the front post at the bottom edge of the bull.
I cut the bull in half with my front post – the rounds hit exactly where the top of my front post is.
I almost wanted to use the six-a-clock hold on this target, but it just seems like a bad habit that I do not need to pick up.

Abesh. I use the pumpkin on a stick method which I believe is the same as 6 o'clock. I did have to come up about a quarter of the way into the bull (large bull) to hit the center. it may be wrong but its the way i've done it for years and it works for me. I don't like my post covering what I'm trying to hit.

"Pumpkin on a stick"
That sounds funny, but it does get the point across.

And I guess I should have said six o'clock, and not six-a-clock; I thought that did not sound right.

I think I might try that method next time. The only reason I dont use it is b/c it seems impractical when shooting stuff other than paper, like squirrels.

Another bad habit - you need to focus on the front sight post :p

so how does this work if i'm shooting a pistol? do i still have to shoot for the 25yd line?

Do you not have a long gun, or do you just really enjoy a challenge?
If you have a good pistol rest I would think you could do very well from 25 yds.

I missed the June Match, but I was working up some new loads for my .220 Swift yesterday so I dragged along the Zastava Z5 to try out some new ammo.

Unfortunately, I only printed up two of the July targets, so I zeroed the .22 lr. using a different target. When I put up the 50 yd. July target I realized that I should have used the black square as the aiming point, but that would have spoiled the targets. Even with my scope set all the way to 9x I couldn't resolve the concentric rings of the targets; they just looked like a low contrast gray blur. Oh well....:o

Forging ahead anyway, the following targets probably only give a relative notion of the accuracy of the ammo. In my quest for some (cheap!) ammo that is reasonably accurate, the first target was shot with CCI Blazer.

For the second target I shot Winchester Lead Free 26 gr. "Condor Country" tin bullets; not cheap, but I was curious as to how they would perform. At a nominal 1650 ft/sec they're pretty zippy!

The Blazer shot better than the tin Winchesters, but clearly I'm way behind everyone in the monthly matches! I can score better using the RWS ammo, but it costs me more than it does to reload the .220 Swift.
