I bought a dissipator upper with what i thought was a 16" barrel. For funsies i measured the barrel from the base of the delta ring all the way to where the muzzle break starts and its 15.5 inches http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/000/210/403/OhCrap.png?1322723607!

It is welded on the bottom, but is it in compliance with state/federal law (iirc, shouldn't it be welded at least 180 degrees around the barrel?)? Could my barrel really be 16" and im just paranoid?

Barrel length is measured from the bolt face to the crown. Drop a dowel in to the barrel with the bolt forward, mark, and measure. Plus I have never even heard of a 15.5" barrel.

1. You're measuring barrel length wrong.
2. Some manufacturers do that because of the various localities(they do sell these things to places outside of CA) that don't like threaded barrels or flash hiders, but because they aren't doing it for barrel length they don't have to do the pin and weld thing like you'd see on a 14.5" barrel.

There are an ATF opinion letter or 2 advising how much welding is necessary.

Iirc, the guideline was 3 equidistant welds joining at least half the circumference.

Don't take this personally, but if that were my upper I'd have it redone by someone skilled with a tig torch...those be some ugly welds.;)

It's a muzzle BRAKE as in "resists movement" or is your muzzle tired?

cut a piece of wooden down at 16inchs that has an outer diameter smaller than that of your bore. lock the bolt home..... drop it down the barrel. If its shorter than your barrel.... you're fine.

i shoved a cut piece of a old usb cable down there. I felt the outer part of the barrel somewhere here:

If that is the tip of the threaded barrel, it is indeed 16 inches.
