Just got back from our local Friends of the NRA dinner & auction, where I won a Remington 700 SPS in 300 WinMag. Any thoughts or reviews on that rifle/caliber combination?

Also, i know it's usually said that you should spend as much on the scope as you did on the rifle, but since the rifle cost me a $20 raffle ticket (ok, several), but that won't get me much. What's a decent introductory-priced (read: inexpensive) scope that would work?

I'll be using this rifle hopefully as my intro into hunting. What kind of game is the 300 WinMag capable of taking humanely, generally?

Now I've gotta wait 10 days to get it out of "jail" - CA really sucks sometimes!

Thanks,

Bill

I wouldn't put a cheap scope on that rifle. I doubt it would last long under that recoil. The SPS is a light hunting rifle. It's accurate but not made for strings of fire. The light barrel profile will heat up quickly.

You should just give it to me

Horrible gun man

Ill make sure its taken care of

:43:

But a great platform to build into whatever you want. Theyre like the AR-15 of the bolt gun world.

The 300 win mag will make cheap scope reticles bounce around like strippers boobies on a friday night. Buy yourself a decent hunting scope for the thing. If you can't afford 1K glass, get a $3-500 scope with a lifetime warranty like Bushnell. Your rifle is capable of taking the largest game that North America has to offer, legally of course.

The 300 Win Mag is a great cartridge for long range shooting and hunting. You should be able to take down virtually any animal (including moose) with one shot given quality ammo. You can easily send a 220 grain bullet out at over 2500 fps.

Get a really good scope for it. Look around the private sales forums here and grab a quality used one.

Check out Double tap ammo.About 400yds in good conditions is all I'm good for. (Browning A-bolt Stainless Stalker)
The combo will go farther but my skill won't.

Leopole VariXIII is what I run. Good for a start, someday I'll upgrade.

I have the r700 sps dm in 300 win mag, great gun, kicks a bit

Put some good optics on it....I find Privi Partizan 180gr pretty good for "plinking" @ $18/20

Blew up some watermelons at 300 yards really well :-p

I have a SWFA SS 10x42 on my R700 SPS. Great scope for the $ that you pay.
