View Full Version : Which Free Floating Handguard

I can't decide on a free floating handguard. Its going to be going on a 16inch carbine length(gas system) barrel. I want a midlength handguard (9-11 inches) over a low pro gas block. I'd prefer a continuous top rail with a couple small rails on the bottom/side. I'd prefer no quad rail but will consider it again (just dumped a monolithic quad rail upper).

I've been looking at the Troy Alpha VTAC rail 11 inch (not sure what the difference between the Alpha and the VTAC Alpha is) but I'm not sure about its ability to keep its alignment with the upper rail.

Also considered the DD Omega X just because its more of the length im looking for (9inch).

Any suggestions guys? Also if you have something you want to sell PM me.

Nice! Im assuming there were slots for you to put on the gas block after you installed the rail? I actually like how your 13" rail looks. Still think i want an 11"... sounds dirty no?

Samson Mfg makes a carbine length rail that wraps around and under the gas block, not sure if that's what you're looking for though. It's the Evolution 7-EX. Smooth tube, you can mount your rails wherever you want, even at 45 degrees: http://www.samson-mfg.com/ar-15_html/product/Evolution-7EX.html

Hey whatever floats your boat... :)

Edit: Yes I still had room in front of the gas block, I just have nothing I wanted to mount.

Vtac and Vtac Alpha mounts differently. The Alphas mounts to standard AR15 barrel nut. The older TRX/VTAC used a Troy barrel nut. by the way, the nut is not included when you buy the Vtac.

I had the MI SS, but did not like the way it felt in my hand. Got the TRX Extreme and never looked back. Honestly, the only difference is the "texture" of the tube. I like the long horizontal cuts on the Troy while a lot of people do not like it, and prefer the smooth tube on the MI. The Troy also felt a tiny bit skinnier.

edit: I think the new Alpha series is definitely more secure. 3 mounting points onto the barrel nit, versus the older style, clamping down on the nut. I just ordered another Troy Alpha today for my next build. 11" for $140 from Palmetto. they are running a 20% off sale on all rails.

I like the TROY Alpha and VTAC Alpha rails (only difference is the appearance - holes vs slots). The rail should not move on you with proper installation and torque on the bolts.

You may want to think twice on the Troy / Vtac Alpha rails. I bought an 11" recently for a light weight middy I put together. While I like the light weight and overall "feel" of the handguard, the locking system leaves something to be desired. Despite being locked down about as tight as I could get it (with red Loctice slathered all over the bolts), it still managed to rotate out of alignment on several different occassions while shooting off a bipod. I think the jarring of the gun jumping up and then coming back down onto the bench under recoil is what caused the rail to rotate.

You may want to take a look at the Daniel Defense MFR rails. They seem to at least have actual anti-rotation screws (albeit small ones) as opposed to the single tab on the left hand side with the Alpha rails.

There's a maker, I think they're in California, that makes some really nice stuff. I lost the card and now I've got to find them at weekend gun show.

The item I like is round with no rails just places to put some at 3, 9, and 6 o'clock and it has holes in it for it's design and the holes have angled cuts. Really nice. Anybody have an idea who they are?

+1 for Troy Alpha/VTAC rail. I went with an 11" Alpha and love it. Although I wouldn't recommend mag dumps without a VFG/AFG or gloves as it tends to get a little warmer than my quad rail did. It does cool down a little quicker though.

I went with the Samson Evolution.

Great rail, very light.

I have a Troy Alpha 13" on my carbine and it's alot lighter than the Rock River handguard it replaced. I also have a 4 inch longer sight radius with the Troy.

Installation was super easy despite my lack of proper tools and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend that setup to anyone.

I also added a Magpul UBR which is nice and heavy so the rifle is perfectly balanced now.

I almost bought the 12" DD MRF recently because of the anti-rotation feature, they come in a 9" midlength (https://www.primaryarms.com/Daniel_Defense_9_Modular_Free_Float_Rail_Black_p/dd-11164.htm?gdftrk=gdfV25369_a_7c1748_a_7c6696_a_7cD D_d_11164) now too.

Thanks for all the input guys. Decided to go with the Samson Evolution 9". I would've gotten the Rainier Arms version but they're out of stock. It was a tough choice but they had the length I wanted, they look good, read some good reviews and I like the two anti-rotation tabs that hug the upper receiver. The 45 degree rail angle was cool too. Thanks everyone!

Excellent pick, grats. I have the Troy and Samson Evolution. I like the Samson a bit more, very light weight.

IMHO,

First noveske nsr 1.4" diameter 13.5" length 7.9oz. (high end manufacturer )
Second Troy alpha/VTAC 1.8" diameter 13" has the most accessories (TRX)
Third third would be Midwest Industries 1.5" diameter 12" length @ 9.3oz! ( super light )
Fourth Rainier Arms Evolution 1.8" diameter 12" 11oz.

Noveske uses a stronger lighter aluminum when Troy/VTAC , M.I., and Rainier Arms uses 6061 t6 but it is all very strong and super light hand guards!

IMHO you cannot go wrong with any of these 4 manufacturers. ( I believe Troy and VTAC are made by 1 manufacturer)

Just FYI... the Rainier Arms Evolution rail is an OEM from Samson MFG. At least that's what I was told.
