I've been considering an AK-pattern rifle for awhile. I actually have a Saiga .223, but I also wanted a "classic" AK for my collection in 7.62x39. I had been considering WASR's for awhile, but I was wary because of the issues I had read.

Anyway, last Friday, I went to Turners and impulse bought one. The one they had on the shelf looked and felt great. My friend has two WASRs and this one definitely seemed a little bit higher quality.

The ad says "new manufacture".. I was wondering if anyone knew what exactly was new about them. Are they built from new parts or what?

the ad is here.. http://www.turners.com/engage/displayads_nonflash.php

Check the trunion, it has the year the parts were made.

99.9% of the "issues" Wasrs have are comestic at best and are usually voiced by those who have little to no fundamental understanding of the AK platform.

Way to go! A lot of people knock WASRs, but from what I've read their quality has improved over the last few years. I got my 5.45 WASR in late 2010 and it's great.

Dates on trunnions are on military rifles and not typically on consumer ones.

From what I was told my a Century rep, many of the WASRs were made with all the government reject AK parts kit from the Romanian manufacturers. Due to the large displeased customer base, apparently they now they have started to use only good kits on better spec'd receivers.

If the new ones are as good as their suppose to be, it sounds like it may be a good product now.

Thats BS, if anything they simply ran out of old parts. Thats it.

You guys have it all wrong. The AK is made from melted down outhouse door handles.

Funny you mentioned that, I was there yesterday and noticed they called the WASR romanian manufactured now. I didn't get a chance to look at it closely, but did notice it was $560 or so. Oh, and it was also double stack, it said on a tag.

Like another poster said, the problems with a WASR are primarily cosmetic. I did see a youtube video , a long time ago, where they had a slow mo of a WASR vs another brand of AK, and the WASR barrel seemed to vibrate more or something.

it's been forever, I don't remember the details.

I love my WASR. Look for...

"As of 2008, there are GP WASR-10/63 rifles which are being made from demilled military rifles. Look for a triangle with arrow (some only have a triangle) on the front trunnion. Quality is much better with these."

I bought my WASR from www.riflegear.com in February of 2011. I have fired 800+ rounds with zero malfunctions.

My WASR can be seen below

You did fine as long as you looked it over...If you didn't then you will be one of those that add to the bad press of the rifle. It is truly my most reliable rifle.

You did great and post pics when you can.

Picked the rifle up today guys.. it isnt the one I looked at on the shelf. It's one from their warehouse.. Luckily it seems to be in the same good condition as the display model. It comes with two DOUBLE STACK mags and bayonet. The Mag well looks good and there doesnt seem to be any wobble with a mag inserted. Sights look fine.. no canting or anything.

I got one a few months ago from Turner's. Canted front sight, but it shoots straight and I haven't had any issues. Kind of ugly wood, but that gives me something to improve upon.

Took it to the range tonight.. Put about 60 rounds of Wolf through it and 20 rounds of some nice brass-cased stuff. Worked like a charm. No jams, no misfires, no FTF... just pure AK goodness.

Very satisified with purchase.
